Historic 2012 for Belgrade Airport

Belgrade Airport shines in 2012

Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport recorded its busiest year on record since opening its doors back in 1962. Nikola Tesla Airport welcomed 3.363.919 passengers, a 7.7% improvement on 2011. As a result, Belgrade surpassed its previous busiest year, 1987, when it saw 3.311.951 passengers pass through its doors. Besides an extensive domestic and European network at the time, the airport also offered direct flights to Africa, Asia, Australia and North America. Furthermore, that same year, JAT Yugoslav Airlines handled 4.531.000 passengers.

Belgrade Airport recorded a busy December. It handled 224.869 passengers compared to 217.684 in 2011, an increase of 3.3%. This is despite a significant drop in the number of operated flights. A total of 3.202 arrivals and departures were recorded, down from 3.425 the year before. Belgrade has retained its position as the busiest airport in the former Yugoslavia.

In 2013 the airport will have to deal with the withdrawal of two airlines. The low cost Niki is being dissolved by its owners Air Berlin and will suspend flights to the Serbian capital later this month. Furthermore, Air France will pull out due to its own cost cutting measures in March. On the other hand, the airport will welcome Pegasus Airlines which launches flights from Istanbul in February. Returning this summer are Croatia Airlines and LOT Polish Airlines with seasonal flights while Wizz Air will launch services to four new destinations. Furthermore, several other airlines have expressed interest to innagurate flights to the Serbian capital in 2013 including TAP Air Portugal and AZAL Azerbaijan Airlines.

Of course there will be extra capacity around this time due to Serbian Christmas. OU were sending their A319 into Sarajevo last week.

Now BEG is no level as 25 years ago. I am not proud on that! Where was BUD, OTP, WAW, PRG... 25 years ago and where they are today.

      Prague - 12.5 million pax
      Budapest - 9.1 million pax
      Warsaw - 9.5 million pax,

Way better than Belgrade, Belgrade can only dream of reaching these figures any time soon. 9 million perhaps by 2025.

Typical serbo hater propaganda. BUD is known today as lowcost airport. Those airports had two decades of stability.

Way to go BEG!!! Hope this will continue and that next year BEG will beat SOF. Nevertheless, record has not been surpassed. Namely, record year indeed was 1987 but the official figure of PAX handled is 3.445.606. This means that 2012 is the second best year. Yet, success is impressive!

No, 3.311 is the official figure for 1987

    2. Anonymous11:25

SOF lost lots of airlines but still maintained its growth. It will have BCN by Vueling, STN & SXF by U2, BER by Air Berlin. Not to mention the extremely busy Jan-Mar ski flights from UK and Russia. easyJet increased their flights to London, Wizzair have a 3rd aircraft and also increasing their flights to LTN. Tough competition in 2013!

Right from the belly I'm telling you the official figure is 3,4 mppa.
      @Anonimous#2
Jan&Feb are busy in last couple of years in SOF so were in 2012 but BEG still managed to get close to SOF. Tough competition, I agree but not elusive.

Sorry, I wrote the wrong figure in my first post. The right one is 3.404.665 mppa in 1987.

Good for BEG! 2013 will be tough though with the withdrawl of 3 airlines and 3 important destinations: Paris, Vienna & Milan. Wizzair should reconsider launching more routes!!

Your post is wrong because it indicates that there will be no services from Belgrade to Paris, Vienna and Milan. On the contrary, I am confident both Paris and Vienna will see additional seats the coming months.

Both cities did: W6 now will fly to BVA while JU increased flights to VIE. W6 must start BGY ASAP.

According to the data that used to be published at www.beg.aero for many years, "busiest" year is still 1987 when 3.404.665 were handled. So unfortunatelly, it is not the year when the most passengers passed through the gates. Interestingly, the data for all other years mentioned in the article is perfectly in line with the data that had been published until some years ago.
If we have in mind that number of passengers is where it was some 25 years ago I think we really don't have too many reasons to be so proud of previous year results.
On the other hand, comparing these results to ones from just several years ago (eg. 2009) this is very encouraging. I do hope that NT can mantain growth at about 5% during next several years, it could be realistic scenario.
Of course, I wish the same (or even better) to all airports in the region.
    Cheers from Belgrade,
    Dejan

I think Split handled 1.42 million pax, Dubrovnik 1.47 million, Zagreb 2.37 million

      not sure about the others.

    2. Anonymous19:03

Wow Dubrovnik is catching up to Zagreb. Is there a possibility of it overtaking it at some point? Especially in the future when more and more people visit the city?

      Delete
    3. Anonymous03:37

Is it? If DBV is catching ZAG and they need 60% increasing to catch ZAG, than ZAG is even closer to BEG because it needs just 40% to come to BEG number.

    4. Anonymous03:46

      Just 40%.......

      When a pass by a ferrari, i just need a key .....

    5. Anonymous05:28

No, Zagreb is going to go up fast now, in 1987 Dubrovnik handled 1.46 million and Zagreb had 1.87 million pax, so there was always this slight advantage Zagreb had, but now Zagreb is moving further away from rest of the pack in Croatia and in 2013 Zagreb numbers should improve considerably, with arival of 3-4 major airlines and massive investments in to new terminal things look really good for Zagreb.

Air France will most likely get major share at Zagreb airport once new terminal is complied and Lufthansa not to be left behind is certain to take great interest as well, German Wings will play important role in Lufthansa's plans.

Than you have British Airways coming strong clearly they see a great potential in Zagreb which had 17.5% increase in tourist visits in 2012 and 15% increase in 2011, indicating that 2013 will also be just as important for tourist arrivals. With Delta Airlines potentially coming to Zagreb in 2014, followed by KLM, SAS, LOT, Iberia, Air Swiss and Allitalia things look great for Zagreb airport.

Quite possibly Zagreb airport will surpass Belgrade airport by 2020 as the buisest airport in Ex-Yugoslavia.

    6. Anonymous10:24

There is no way Zagreb will surpass Belgrade, ever. There are no valid arguments based on socio-economic parameters to sustain this idea.
