Skopje and Tivat see record summer

Busy times for Skopje and Tivat

Skopje Alexander the Great Airport has continued to post impressive results with growth reaching over 23% in August. During the month, Macedonia’s busiest airport welcomed 115.023 passengers, an increase of 23.1% compared to the same month last year. In addition, Ohrid Airport handled 16.463 passengers. As a result, the two airports welcomed a total of 131.486 travellers through their doors during the month of August, up 20.5% on last year. So far in 2013, Skopje and Ohrid handled a combined total of 732.831 passengers, up 17.5% with 8.489 flight operations. The growth is being driven by Wizz Air which is the country’s busiest airline.

In August, Istanbul was the busiest route operating in and out of Skopje, followed by Vienna, Zurich, London and Malmo. In the first eight months Ljubljana made it into the top five busiest as the only EX-YU city. The busiest airlines so far this year were Wizz Air, Turkish Airlines, Austrian, Adria Airways and Pegasus Airlines. Skopje will hope to maintain growth next year as well and possibly reach the one million passenger mark as Wizz Air prepares to base a second aircraft in the city next summer and launch several new routes.

Meanwhile, across the border in Montenegro, Tivat Airport saw its busiest month in history. The airport handled an impressive 203.492 passengers in August, up 28.5% compared to the same month last year. A total of 1.098 flight operations were recorded in and out of the city, an increase of 19.4% on August 2012. In the first eight months of the year, Tivat Airport welcomed 657.257 passengers, up 20.2% and saw 3.921 flight operations, representing an increase of 12.2%. Early results from September indicate the airport will extend its record run with growth anticipated to reach between 10 to 15% this month.

It's good news for Skopje but no good has ever come from a capital city airport basing its growth around a single low cost airline (which is heavily subsidised for it)

I think it's blown out of proportion. Croatian airports are paying - and will continue to do so - higher subsidies for Ryanair every year, while the Skopje deal is finite, and despite that Wizz Air is already basing a second aircraft. It seems their fate in the market is paying off, looks much more like a win/win scenario than any other to be honest.

OT: Belgrade - Abu Dhabi departure will be at 5:10 pm and arrival at 1:25 am in Abu Dhabi. This is little different than announced, probably to adjust for better connections.

It will be interesting to follow how BEG numbers change in November and December. Last year they handled 220.000 and 225.000 respectively.
Let's hope that next year they get close to at least 240.000!

had to revise my figure for tivat airport a bit, had 2011 figures on which i based my prediction of 9% growth.

No idea for Maribor, Nis, Banja luka, Tuzla or Osijek, as they're served on add-hock basis, could be anything. Mostar might handle 90 000 pax this year.

      Belgrade - 3.4 million
      Zagreb 2.45 million
      Split - 1.71 million
      Pristina - 1.66 million
      Dubrovnik 1.58 million
      Ljubljana - 1.33 million
      Skopje - 920 000
      Tivat - 790 000
      Podgorica - 765 000
      Sarajevo - 735 000
      Zadar - 510 000
      Pula - 410 000
      Rijeka - 125 000

If you intend to be smart in forecasting than check actual data first, avoiding simple play with digits on the calculator keyboard.

BEG apt has recorded 3,36 mil pax in 2012 with almost 80000 pax more jan-aug 2013, strong September start and significant capacity increase in the last 2 months of 2013. Only JU will have over 30% capacity increase during November and December only.
On top of that capacity increase Nov and Dec 2013 vs same months 2012 will have following airlines: SU (+7 weekly) EY (+7), LO (+3) AZ (+3) LX (+2) TK (+2) B2(+2) U2(+1) QR(+1). Overall during November and December 2013 there will be between 60 and 70 daily departures from BEG vs ~55 during the same months of 2012.

And according to you BEG will see decline in passenger numbers September through December 2013 despite capacity rise. Give me a break!

At the same time you expect ZAG to grow despite capacity decrease and despite declining trend from May 2013 onwards.

Even more ridiculous is your SJJ forecast with 735000 pax meaning that September through December 2013 would see total od 280000 pax or 100 000 pax more than within the same time frame in 2012 or incredible 55% pax number rise.

Mind fixing those bugs in your ... mind?

And if you take Etihads flight?
The Banja Luka flight should easily connect to Etihad if it can not connect to JUs Abu Dhabi flight.

      Delete
    3. Unfortunately Etihad's flight leaves even earlier, at 12.25 (arr. 20.40).

I know airlines such as LOT or Aegean sell connecting flights of only 25 minutes but it seems that does not apply to Air Serbia.
However, they seem to have decent fares from Banka Luka. Are they cheaper than what Adria used to sell?

I don't know what you are talking about, Nemjee. HOWEVER (@ anonymous) they are still sorting through their system and planning everything out.

it is possible to go Banja Luka - Abu Dhabi with a 50 minute stop in Belgrade, and on the return flight 1 hour and 45 minutes I believe......

    5. My bad, I confused the arrival time from Banja Luka. Connecting time would be 45 minutes so it should be ok.

  8. They have finally added an advertisement for their new routes on jat's website.
They have some promotional fares going around:

    Banja Luka €79
    Ljubljana €99
    Bucharest €109
    Prague €109
    Abu Dhabi €239

Midnight sky over Belgrade will become exciting for the first time! :)

I can't wait to be at the airport in the morning to see all the amazing arrivals. The best part of it all is that Belgrade will finally become a decent airport in terms of aircraft movement!!
With such fares and these schedules we can see that Etihad's goal was simple, build a true crossroad in Belgrade.

yeah, once the passangers see the belgrade airport, they will be glad to put some extra cash next time to fly via vienna, zurich, or some other serious airport.. although not to be compared with zagreb, belgrade airport is a cheapesness of it´s own kind... i really hope that things will change in next years.. i´m tired of having a feeling that i´m in a middle town post office when being at states largest airport.
