Ryanair scales down Zadar base

Ryanair plans fewer flights out of Zadar

Ryanair will be scaling back operations at its seasonal base in Zadar this summer. Last year, Zadar was the first city in the former Yugoslavia to become the ultra low cost airline’s home. Its presence has played a major role in the airport’s outstanding results in 2013 and its busiest year on record by handling 475.572 passengers, up an impressive 27.3% on the year before. Despite plans for Ryanair to boost operations by 25% from Zadar this year, the airport’s management says this is unlikely to happen following talks this week. “Those were the plans this autumn but everything changed during the winter. Announcements made by the former management were unrealistic. Ryanair has changed its plans since then”, Zadar Airport CEO, Irena Ćosić, told the “Slobodna Dalmacija” daily.

This summer, Ryanair will serve fifteen destinations from Zadar with the airline replacing its East Midlands service with Manchester, which will be launched on April 4. However, the airport’s management says there will be fewer frequencies than last year. It adds Ryanair has retired older aircraft in its fleet with replacements to arrive next year, forcing the airline to cut down on services at selected bases, amongst which is Zadar. “They say Zadar did well when compared to the reductions seen at other Ryanair bases”, Ms. Ćosić said. Zadar provided 1.4 million euros for Ryanair to set up a base in Zadar and station one of its aircraft at the airport.

According to the airport’s management, its goal of handling over half a million passengers this year is unlikely to be achieved. The airport expects to see similar passenger numbers in 2014 to that of last year. Zadar Airport started the year off by welcoming 2.164 passengers through its doors this January, a decrease of 0.3% compared to the same month last year.

And there you have it, the difference in Ryanair vs Wizz Air low cost subsidizing strategy for the ex-Yu region.

One of them just wants to grab the money and run.

    1. Is Wizz air even subsidized in BEG? I heard the same allegations against it, but I understood that they just get free airbridges when nobody is using them.

      Bull's eye, Aleksandar.
I was referring to other subsidized operations. BEG is not one of them.

Seriously what's going on with Croatian aviation? ZAG, DBV, SPU, ZAD numbers down, Ryanair cutting flights, OU is a shambles... But in all honesty Ryanair screwed Osijek over like this as well when they pulled out. Its good that they will be operating 15 destinations but if its like once per week what's the point.

Last year was best in history for Croatian airports, and this year it'll be even better :) ZAG was stagnating, but this year with new management and OU getting back on its feet everything will be all right and ZAG figures will go up again. On the other side DBV and especially SPU figures will go crazy during the summer timetable(Apr-Oct). There are interesting times ahead of us :)

I agree that ZAG will recover, the new management seems to know what it's doing but I'm not so optimistic about OU. Offcourse I don't think it will go bankrupt or anything like that but its starting to remind me of Jat from last year more and more.

Completely agree, this will be a good year for Croatian airports, but I just don't see OU in the future, Mr Kucko should leave its position (possibly go to jail) and let someone who knows something about aviation!

Guys OU will be OK, not worried about Croatian Airports this year at all, stagnation during first winter months is normal, it was always like that for past decade or so.

Split and Dubrovnik had not moved from 25-30k during Nov-Feb period, its just one of those sad facts.

Ryanair increased flights from Zadar to Frankfurt HHN 4 weekly and London STN 6 weekly so number of flights from Zadar will remain almost the same. Bad news are that promised boost of operations won't realize this summer.

Ryanair will fly from Osijek to London STN 2 x weekly.

  13. Visiting Zadar is like peeling back layers of time until you end up in the 9th century BC in ancient Illyria. The Old Town is paved with gleaming white stone and the straight streets were first laid out by the Romans. Most Zadar hotels and private accommodation are in the suburbs: either in Borik, the peninsula that lies about 4km NW of the town centre or in Diklo which is a little further. I
