EX-YU airlines see passenger growth

Air Serbia remains busiest in the former Yugoslavia

The national carriers of the former Yugoslavia have fared generally well during the first six months of the year, with the majority registering passenger growth. Air Serbia, Adria Airways and B&H Airlines all saw their numbers improve during the first six months of 2014 compared to the same period last year, while Croatia Airlines recorded a small decline in numbers as it continues with its restructuring process.

After six months, Air Serbia continues to maintain its position as the busiest carrier in the former Yugoslavia. According to Belgrade Airport’s financial report for the first two quarters, the Serbian national carrier welcomed 964.708 passengers on board its aircraft during the first six months, an increase of 71.1% compared to the same period last year. The airline saw its passenger numbers rise 75% in the second quarter alone. In addition, Air Serbia’s passenger share at its Belgrade Airport hub has soared by more than 10%, from 37.4% last year to 48.5% in 2014. The Serbian national carrier operated more services than its Croatian counterpart in the first six months, running 13.538 flights, up 76% on last year.

The former Yugoslavia’s second busiest carrier, Croatia Airlines, handled 801.288 passengers in the first six months of the year, down 1% on the same period in 2013. Out of those, 567.430 passengers were welcomed on international flights (same as last year), 212.109 on domestic services (down 3%) and a further 21.794 travellers on charter flights (a decrease of 6%). Overall, Croatia Airlines saw its numbers improve on flights to and from Belgium (+28.7), the Netherlands (+10.8), Bosnia and Herzegovina (+6.9), Austria (+6.5), Germany (+4.2) and France (+1.1). On the other hand, the carrier recorded poorer results on services to and from Italy (-12.5), the United Kingdom (-10.7%), Macedonia (-8.4%) and Switzerland (-3%). Passenger numbers on other markets detracted a total of 19.2%. The airline operated a total of 12.266 flights, up 3% on last year.

With its new business model in place, which has seen Adria Airways transform into a hybrid full fare – low cost airline, the Slovenian national carrier welcomed almost 478.000 travellers during the first six months, an improvement of 6.6%. In June alone Adria handled 110.000 passengers, up 3.8% on the same period last year. The airline’s busiest routes so far this year have been Frankfurt, Zurich, Munich, Moscow, Brussels and Vienna. The Slovenian carrier is extremely happy with the performance of its newly launched flights to Prague and Warsaw, as well as services from Tirana to Frankfurt and from Munich to Lodz in Poland. Notable growth has also been recorded on the airline’s seasonal flights from Ljubljana to London Gatwick and Pristina to Malmo.

Despite its troubles, B&H Airlines also recorded passenger growth during the first six months of the year. The carrier welcomed almost 18.000 travellers, an increase of 20.6% compared to the same period last year. Of those, 1.155 passengers were carried on charter flights.

Montenegro Airlines has not made its quarterly or annual passenger results public in years. On the weekend of August 2 and 3, the carrier said it handled 7.006 passengers during the two days, 3.666 of which were carried on Sunday alone, its best 24-hour result on record. It outperformed its previous best result set on July 20, 2014 when the airline welcomed 3.124 passengers on board its jets, which was its busiest day since 2007.

Croatia Airlines is not doing so bad, considering the situation they're in, July, August and September should be much better! Congrats to Air Serbia and Adria as well!

Well, they carried 964,708 pax as of 30 June. It has been 47 days (of peak season) since then so I am quite sure they are way past 1 million now :)

How come it hasn't been reported here?

Croatia had it's millionth reported here on 29th July. Why hasn't the same been done for Jat?

      Because Jat no longer exists?
Air Serbia doesn't publish these kind of information, they are very secretive for no reason.

You need a company source to provide you with this info. Ideally their PR department would utilize such information and publish it because it always brings some good reputation with the public. Unfortunately their PR still has to learn about such things.

Something doesn't quite add up here. If there was growth of 69.3%, that means that at the same time last year there would have been only 296,165 pax.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Growth was 71.09%. PAX handled in 2013 was 563832 and in 2014 964708 = difference of +71.09.

      Delete
    2. Anonymous11:36

No. Dividing the numbers doesn't give you the % growth.

      964708 - 71.09% = 278897.

Serbian numbers must be different. ;)

      Delete
    3. You have to learn how to calculate percentage increase :) To calculate a percentage, first you find the difference between the two numbers, in this case 400876. Then, take the difference and divide it by the original number. Then times it by 100 and that is how you calculate percentage increase/decrease.

If that it is too difficult. You can always calculate it online :) Have a nice day

OU generally has poor performance during first 4 months, due to strategy of cutting costs.

In 2012 OU had 2 million pax and almost 75% of that was achieved between May and September.

OU should be on target of 1.75 million this year and revenue of around 1.55 billion kuna or around $280 million, down on 2012 when airline had $327 million turnover and large losses.

This year OU will end with decent profits, we'll see in April of 2015 when they publish official figures.

OU will end year with profit if they sell a plane and a couple of engines like they did in 2013

The statistics are for the first six months where two of their supposedly good months are included. I think a lot of people are turning a blind eye to the catastrophic situation in the airline.

    4. Anonymous16:43

Actually, main tourist months in Croatia are July, August and September, overall results of Croatia Airlines are not that bad, they are in a really bad position right now, I thought the results would be much worse! I travel Dubrovnik-Zagreb at least 3 times a month and (whenever I travelled ) the planes were almost 100 % full!

I don't see why Croatia Airlines is the only ex-Yugoslav airline not to work with Air Serbia. I mean, even YM has an interline agreement in place.
It is obviously that this self-imposed exile is not helping them.

I don't think so, look at Adria.
I think it has more to do with them not wanting to work with the airline because it's Serbian.

    3. Anonymous16:54

Ivan Pavlovic @ 3.23pm - you really have no idea what you are talking about. Not only is anonymous above correct in JU working with Adria - which is in the STAR Alliance - but it is interline agreement with Austrian, which is OWNED by LH !!! It is also has an SPA with Turkish - the airline it recently had problems with. So you are way off the mark. It has everything to do with OU not wanting to work with a Serb airline - to their detriment ! No wonder they are going down the toilet fast ....

    4. Anonymous17:06

Croatia Airlines has a bad management, they are in a terrible position right now, no wonder they are not profitable in a country with around 7 million passengers (by plane) last year!

"It has everything to do with OU not wanting to work with a Serb airline - to their detriment!" - give me a break!

    5. Anonymous17:32

B&H Airlines has catastrophic management yet they manage to work with Air Serbia. Let's also not forget the whole incident with flying permits to Croatia in 2009. Croatia has not been the most welcoming market for Serbian aircraft. That's a fact so we do not have to give you a break.

      Delete
    6. Anonymous17:55

I suppose (if OU doesn't fall apart), they will start cooperating soon, in the meanwhile Air Serbia flies to 3 Croatian cities, which is great ! No need to compare B&H Airlines with OU, OU had some bad decisions, hope things will change for the best and our two carriers will finally start cooperating!
