New control towers for Belgrade and Tivat

Multi million euro control tower project for Belgrade and Tivat announced

The Serbia and Montenegro Air Traffic Services Agency (SMATSA), which controls the airspace of both countries, has announced plans for the construction of a new control tower at the airports in Belgrade and Tivat. The project is estimated to be worth ten million euros. SMATSA says the new control towers will improve aviation safety in both countries and will also become landmarks of their respective cities. The project is said to have received the full backing from the governments of both Serbia and Montenegro. While Belgrade’s new control tower will take three years to build, Tivat is expected to open the new facility in early 2016.

SMATSA CEO, Radojica Rovčanin, explains that both cities are in need of a new control tower. “The existing control tower in Belgrade was opened in 1962. The rapid development in traffic in recent decades has called for the improvement of the city’s air traffic control system. When the current Belgrade control tower opened, only some 371 aircraft use to fly over the country. Today, we handle that same amount of aircraft in just one hour”, Mr. Rovčanin says. He adds, “Therefore, we need to make technological improvements to Belgrade Airport’s control tower and, in doing so, we will do our best to make it a building that will dazzle with its height, luxury, style and beauty. The establishment of Air Serbia has significantly increased traffic at Belgrade Airport with the number of flight operations growing by 30%, which is why we need a new control tower”.

Tivat Airport control tower

Tivat Airport’s new control tower is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2015 and in use by the start of the 2016 summer season. Mr. Rovčanin says the same technology used in Belgrade will be in place at Tivat’s control tower, which will resolve all aircraft monitoring issues at the airport over the next twenty years. “With the new tower in Tivat we will improve safety with the use of the latest technology, which will, in turn, improve the functioning of all of the airport’s services. It is important to note that this control tower will be an architectural masterpiece which will greet tourists upon their arrival in Tivat and leave a strong first impression on them”. SMATSA is yet to reveal further project details.

I think it's really good that they are investing in a new control tower. Will the current one remain in use after the completion of the new tower?

Nice to see this new control tower being built in Tivat.

I think 2015 can be a landmark year for Belgrade airport. If everything goes well then it could be the first year when no month has less than 300.000 passengers. February remains the weakest month with 232.000 passengers handled in 2014.
More importantly, in 2015 I expect both July and August to have more than 600.000 passengers!

A week from today we are celebrating one year of Air Serbia. I am just super excited to see them outperform themselves. I think that in 2015 we will see impressive growth after which we are back to normal, standard growth. :)

I also wanted to add that this year, not only will Belgrade make it to the top 100 busiest airports in Europe but it will rank around the 85th position, alongside Riga.

Mozda ce ljudi uslisiti nade of good will ! Gospod jedino zna i ljudi kada vreme dodje. Do tada pozdrav iz Kraljeva. I really hope that this will happen, because currently BEG is airport with one of the biggest grows in Europe, and in the world. Also, third terminal is absolutely needed and should be used only by ASL so it could make an big development and become an big and profitable airline with more planes in fleet in more destinations. In my opinion, terminal 2 could be used by all national airliners such as Lufthansa, Etihad, Aeroflot etc. Terminal 1should be renovated and used for low-cost airliners only.It would be really great to see BEG as an airport with 7-8, or even 10 million pax per year.

    1. This is how it should work:
Terminal 1: Charters and Low Cost Carriers
Terminal 2: legacy and national carriers
Terminal 3: Air Serbia, Etihad alliance, and partners

  12. I'm surprised nobady commented on "structural masterpiece" statement from this gentleman. I'm all for preaty and everything but masterpieces usually cost a lot of money. At the time when both governments are struggling to make end met they should built a functional and forward looking facility and leave masterpieces for some better times.

It also shows how out of touch some people are. At the time when they are reducing payments to retirees why would you have the need to even say something like this publicly.

There will be no new control tower built at Belgrade airport without overall solution for airport sale or concession and expansion plans. Existing tower will be in use for at least 4-5 more years.
