Wizz Air expands in Serbia and Macedonia

Wizz Air introduces new flights from Niš, Skopje and Ohrid

Wizz Air will be expanding its presence in Serbia and Macedonia this summer with the introduction of new flights to Niš and the addition of five new routes from Skopje and one from Ohrid. The low cost airline will introduce three weekly flights from Niš, in Serbia’s south-east, to Malmo on June 25. The new service will operate alongside its planned two weekly flights to Basel, which begin on July 3. “We are delighted to announce our expansion from Niš. Only a month after we announced our first route, from Niš to Basel, we are now adding our second to Malmo in Sweden”, John Stephenson, Wizz Air’s Executive Vice President, said. He added that while the airline does not plan to introduce additional services from Niš by the end of the year, flights to Germany might be considered in 2015. The Mayor of Niš, Zoran Perišić, says the new route will connect the Serbian diaspora living in Sweden with their homeland. Coupled with its Belgrade base, Wizz Air now offers a total of twelve destinations to seven countries from Serbia.

In Skopje, Wizz Air officially announced its expansion in Macedonia, which was reported on extensively over the past month. The airline will deploy a third Airbus A320 aircraft at its Skopje base from June 29, adding five new services from the Macedonian capital to Friedrischshafen, Sandefjord, Barcelona, Lubeck and Nuremberg. Each new route will be operated twice per week. The new aircraft will allow Wizz Air to increase its number of weekly flights on existing routes from Skopje to Cologne, Frankfurt Hahn, Paris Beauvais and Bergamo, from two to three per week, as well as to Gothenburg, from three to four weekly flights, and Malmo, from five weekly flights to a daily service. Wizz Air also announced operations from Macedonia’s second international airport, Ohrid, with a new service to Basel launching July 1 and operating twice a week.

Commenting on its expansion in Macedonia, the airline’s Executive Vice President said, "Today’s announcement is great news for Macedonia. By expanding our Skopje fleet and adding Ohrid to our route network, we create more travel opportunities and a greater choice of destinations. This is expected to create more local jobs as well as further stimulate tourism in Macedonia. We expect that our six new services and the increased capacity on existing services will be welcomed by consumers as we bring more low fares to Macedonia”. Wizz Air handled over half a million passengers from Skopje last year. It now offers a total of twenty routes to ten countries from Macedonia.

12 lines in seven countries is quite fine.

Still, it is only 7 countries. I would like if they introduced Charleroi... Just to add some variety. Pitty..

Didn't they suspend Charleroi from BEG? I think it was their worst performing route.

Probably it wasn't the best of their routes but I think it wasn't bad enough for suspension. They suspended it only when airport allegedly increased its taxes. Maybe they could have two flights per week..

But okay, now it is not bad either.

Charleroi was doing ok but then Air Serbia destroyed them with daily flights and competitive fares.

I wonder when will they finalize their talks with Podgorica over launching flights from Poland and Germany?
And what about Pristina, the Website has also reported at some time, that the airport would like to have Wizz Air among its users. Then the only Balkan airports wthout Wizz Air would be Tirana and Zagreb - they stopped flying to Zagreb long ago, maybe they will come back at some time...

Every airline bypasses BNX if possible so the Wizz as well. There is no competent managing board, that's the main problem. A new management team is needed to turn the ground-handling company round.

Nema to logike.

Sve to znači smanjenje broja putnika.

No, Niš ne otvara ništa posebno.

Honestly, this will pretty much be the network of Air Serbia since all the most money-making destinations have already been covered. With few exceptions, the most notable one being the long haul flights, the network expansion will stagnate cause this is the limit of how much you can stretch your network and hope to be profitable with a leased fleet. Only once Air Serbia takes ownership of additional aircraft, we may expect some serious network expansion, greatly depending on synergies and virtual boundaries set by the members of the very alliance Air Serbia belongs to (Etihad, Alitalia...). So what can we expect while being optimistic and realistic at the same time:

      On short term:
      - Lease of additional ATR aircraft
      - A very conservative route expansion (opening of one or two additional European destinations) and risk free development of network through codeshare agreements (such as Singapore and Vietnam recently)
      - With Venice now out of the question, the furthest we can see Air Serbia stretch its ATR fleet is Bratislava, Krakow, Lvov, Odessa, Chisinau, secondary Romanian cities. Seeing how their ATR fleet is already streched, that's very unlikely so most likely we'll just see increased frequencies and adjustments on existing routes notably Tirana and Zagreb; those other destinations might be eventualy pushed to medium or long-term, if ever to be opened.
      - The most likely candidate for intra-European flights is Madrid, maybe Munich. I'm afraid the first one won't materialize before JU starts taking ownership of new aircraft cause you don't need a leased A319 to spend the whole day sunbathing in Spain while it could go to Moscow, i hope to be wrong.
      - Opening of Chicago, New York and Beijing (independently of additional intra-European flights) but greatly dependent on regional flights openings and frequencies (with the clock ticking due to developments in the neibhurhood, what might push this project that should have been medium term into the short-term frame)

      On medium term:
      - Additional frequencies across the entire network, double daily to almost any destination being the norm
      - Expansion into secondary markets of Romania, Russia and into the Caucasus and Middle-East
      - Perhaps entering the cargo business by converting the 737's to freighter variant

      On long term:
      - Expansion to secondary markets in Western Europe
      - Long-haul flights network increase and operation of some on behalf of Etihad (Etihad planning to route MEX via Rome, as an example of such cooperation, or Air Seychelles operating to Hong Kong)
      - Acquisition of regional airlines such as BH and Montenegro Airlines
      - Wide-body order or transfer from Etihad Airways into effective ownership
      - Ending the lease of both the short haul and wide-body fleet (70% of fleet at least should be owned)

      8 E190
      20 A320neo
      7 A321neo
      7 A359 ( seasonal MIA-BKK- BOM ( preko cele godine da lete za LAX-ORD-YYZ-IAD-JFK-SIN-JNB-PVG-PEK.
      Kargo flota :
Ako Aviolet 733 imaju mogucnost QC onda
      3-4 B733F
      1 B77F

this is by funniest comment somebody ever wrote on this blog, hands down! This is so unrealistic that I dont have any words to describe this INN-NS. Now we know how much you know about aviation after putting 4 different types of aircraft manufacturers into one company. Also do you REALLY think that AirSerbia could fill a flight from lets say BOM, or even MIA???

    35. Anonymous22:20

      E190 sam bezveze napisao
A i mnoge aviokompanije imaju 4 tipa aviona

INN-NS, I have traveled so far with ASL 10 times mostly during July and August and once this January to destinations: AMS, CDG, TLV, and IST. Out of this 10 flights, only the CDG flight was both ways full ( 90+ occupancy), while all other flights were around 60%, while TLV was both times around 40-50% full. Excluding TLV, the other three destinations are world hubs to which ASL should be flying constantly full during summer ( 90+ load wise). If ASL cannot fill this mentioned lines during summer time to destinations which JAT has been flying for years then how on earth will ASL fill BOM and MIA. I also disagree with people who say that you cannot judge airlines flight loads just by 10 flights.

    37. Anonymous22:49

btw I forogt to mention that I travelled to AMS twice, once in July and once in January. During July period the load was as mentioned around 60%, while during January I had full row to myself

I completely get what you are trying to say, but at the same time I think ASL should focus on developing the current routes ( improving loads) and introducing more European destinations such as Madrid, Barcelona, Saint Petersburg. Also introducing Cairo and Amman would be a nice edition for transfer pax. If we look at Cyprus Airways one of the reasons they went red and now finally ceased operations was due to long-haul aircraft.

Baš me zanima to. Veliki pozdrav za sve dobronamerne ljude. :)

I sincerely doubt that any carrier can operate flignts to INI with A320 on economic basis (with no subsidies).

Guess the ideal plane for sustainable traffic from/to INI is Dash 8.

Don't worry, those Wizz guys are very conservative with route planning, they don't fly unprofitable routes.

How is the capacity of an airport calculated? If the capacity is 100,000 pax p/a then it's 274 per day, i.e. a full plane with 137 seats of incoming and outgoing pax. Is it possible that INI can handle only a plane a day?

It is time for google.rs to also add Belgrade internal airport map as they did for some other airports around the world! Even better, to also add StreetView inside BEG terminal as for Madrid Barajas terminal?

^ So are you talking about transatlantic flights in 2016? Can you elaborate a bit more. Are there any new routes planned this year? Also the thing which worries me is that not a single foreign company has announced BEG flights for sooo long!!! I am not counting Belavia with its CRJ-200 one weekly flight. The only airline which started BEG flights was TAP Portugal and that is it ( they cancelled the flights sadly).

      Delete
    6. Anonymous19:29

Exactly Vaske. I believe in 2016 we will have flights to China, USA and Canada as well as further expansion to Middle East and Noth Africa.

I`m also afraid because there are no new comers to BEG. We can see only reduction of foreign companies and unfortunatelly that trend will keep going in the future.
It`s a pitty that Tap didnt make some code share agreement with JU. TAP could feed JU`s flight to the rest of Balkans while JU could feed TAP`s flghts to West Africa and Brasil.

    7. Anonymous20:35

TAP suspended the route until summer, they are not sure yet what to do with BEG route, hopefully will return and go seasonal so not everything is lost with TP.
