Wizz growth hits competition in Skopje

Wizz Air fuels competition at Skopje Airport

European legacy carriers have been hit by increased competition at Skopje Alexander the Great Airport from low cost airline Wizz Air. Austrian, Adria and Croatia Airlines, which rely on a significant number of transfer passengers from Macedonia, saw their numbers decrease in Skopje last year while budget carrier Wizz Air more than doubled its figures. In 2014, Wizz Air handled 557.376 passengers to and from Macedonia’s capital, up 55.7% on the year before. During 2014, Wizz Air based a second aircraft in Skopje and launched flights to four new destinations – Paris Beauvais, Frankfurt Hahn, Cologne and Charleroi, bringing the total number of destinations served from the Macedonian capital to fourteen. The airline’s passenger share in Skopje jumped over 10% last year.

Performing well on the Macedonian market in 2014 were also Turkish Airlines, Air Serbia and Edelweiss Air. Turkey’s national carrier welcomed 136.200 travellers to and from Skopje, up 6.5% on the year before, while Air Serbia became the fourth busiest airline operating out of Macedonia, up from seventh position in 2013. Air Serbia handled 60.039 passengers on its Skopje flights, an increase of 34.3%. On the other hand, Adria Airways suffered one of the biggest declines in numbers. It welcomed 46.964 passengers on board its aircraft, down 11.7% on 2013. Adria’s CEO, Mark Anžur, recently said, “In Skopje, our 6% market share is declining as a result of subsidies offered to Wizz Air”. Croatia Airlines also saw its numbers decrease marginally, handling 45.632 travellers on its flights to and from Macedonia, down 3.1%. However, the carrier says it is content with its results. “Croatia Airlines operates daily flights to Skopje during the winter and eight weekly flights during the summer. The offered frequencies and capacity meets the demand. Croatia Airlines’ passenger numbers to Skopje are stable, despite increased competition”, the carrier says.

Last week, Wizz Air announced the launch of five new destinations from the Macedonian capital starting this summer, three of which are in Germany. The new routes will likely further impact Austrian Airlines which in 2014 welcomed 98.602 passengers on its Skopje flights, a decrease of 6.1%. The Macedonian Civil Aviation Agency recently said the country is moving forward with plans to create its own national carrier which could commence operations at the end of year. Its launch could further impact airlines present on the Macedonian market. Croatia Airlines says it is closely monitoring developments in the country. “If Macedonia’s new carrier takes off and its model is similar to ours, we believe we will be among the first airlines to offer some form of cooperation if we see an interest in it”, the Croatian carrier says.

Skopje Airport handled 1.208.359 passengers in 2014, up 22.7%. The number of operated flights increased by 11%. All statistics used in this article have been provided by Portline Airport Media Solutions and authorised by TAV Airport Holdings.

Very interesting. So I guess those comments how JU is insignificant in Macedonia are not true. Surprised flyDubai isn't doing better.

Dunno, depends on wether you consider a 4.9 % share of passengers as significant or not? The more the merrier i say. Regarding flydubai, it baffles me why a saturday flight isnt offered considering the nature of the route.

So if my calculations are right Fly Dubai's lf is around 60-65% in Skopje. That's not that good for a lcc and such a long flight.

    3. Anonymous10:07

Well JU is the 4th carrier at SKP so it's not bad at all. More pax than Pegasus :)

    4. Anonymous10:11

Not that good, but i don't know can you really call them a true lcc? I mean a quick check for flights in april dxb-skp and airserbia is 20 euros cheaper than them, and pegasus is 50 euros cheaper, so i guess their yields per pax aren't the worst...

      Delete
    5. Anonymous10:23

      @anon 10:07

Well its telling that you would compare them to pegasus (a lcc) but you're right they carried 2665 more passengers, although they did have more than twice as many flights . And cheap fares work a treat in a poor country ;)

Fly Dubai at Skp - load Factor 64,7 % or 116,46 pax from 174 available

I am not surprised. I live in Skopje and travelled by FlyDubai to KTM from BEG it's about 500 e, from SKP it's about 700e.Big difference for LCC.

the JU-numbers will go down because they are only flying once daily this year (even using ATR)

      Delete
    9. Anonymous12:56

JU's double daily flight was only in summer so the numbers shouldn't change that much. Also, they do send the jet a few times per week.

      Delete
    10. Anonymous13:13

not true , JU started double daily with the begin of the summer season (end of March).

this time there are no double daily for the whole of April ( i havent checked further)

      Delete
    11. Anonymous13:43

JU's summer schedule has not been finalised yet. They only revised their ATH flights the other day and that's one of their most lucrative markets out there.

    12. Anonymous18:23

One thing you all forget is that BEG is 440 km away from SKP - much less than all other destinations in offer from Skopje. Also, there are 2 trains and 11 buses per day connecting this two cities, unlike most other destinations which are much further and with no other direct connection. So, my guess is that JU results are excellent and depending on transfer passengers which is even better for JU.

      Delete
    13. Anonymous18:45

wrong! JU earns more if you are travelling BEG-ARN , rather then SKP-BEG-ARN for the same price or even less. its good for building a hub , but financially its not ideal

Actually, Budapest is as well, they have >50% of the LLC market there and ~1/3 of the total market. It's just that Lufthansa and others are also much more developed. It's only "national" in SKP due to the dismemberment of Yug. I'd consider comparing to airports of similar amount of yearly traffic.

    Turkish:373 daily passengers
    Austrian: 270 daily passengers

Adria Airways (JP, Ljubljana) chairman of the airline's aupervisory board Tone Pekolj has told Slovenia's Finance journal earlier this month that his board was not satisfied with the work done by the airline's management during the years 2013 and 2014 and also expressed reservations about this year's business plan.

"If you have to go on like this, it would be better to close immediately," he said.

In a bid to expand its revenue base, CEO Mark Anžur announced that this year, his airline will expand into Europe with bases in Munich, Lodz (Poland), Pristina, and Tirana (Albania).

With its burgeoning debt overhang, Ljubljana has again slated Adria for privatization with the Slovenian Sovereign Holding (Slovenski Državni Holding - SDH), the Bank Asset Management Company (Družba za Upravljanje Terjatev Bank - DUTB), and the PDP restructuring firm (Posebna Družba za Podjetniško) to jointly dispose of their combined 91.58% stake in the national carrier.

During a visit to Qatar last week, Slovenian State Secretary at the Ministry of Economic Development and Technology, Ales Cantarutti, pitched a stake in the carrier to the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani, hoping to replicate the success Serbia has seen with Etihad Airways' involvement in Air Serbia (JU, Belgrade).

“They could at least seriously think about this (proposal)… Mergers and partnerships are necessary in the airline business,” Cantarutti told the Gulf News. “I don’t see why Qatar Airways (QR, Doha Hamad Int'l) would not do the same [as Etihad]. We want Qatar Airways to put investments according to European Union legislation. There are some limitations as to ownership."

The last attempt at offloading a 75% in the carrier failed in 2012.

I think it would have been better for Croatia Airlines to be part of Oneworld because after Malev sunk, there is no carrier in the Balkans for Oneworld, so Croatia Airlines would have been the only gateway to the Balkans for Oneworld rather than competing with so many members in their own alliance (Austrian, Lufthansa, Swiss, Adria, Turkish, Aegean, LOT) in the region.

where I can find info about these cancelations?

The airline has not published anything officially so they will let you know if you are one of the affected passengers.

Daj da skupimo novce na kickstarteru i kupimo Kroaciju samo da bi INN-NS šutio mjesec dana! Koliko nam eura treba za to?

Airlines sometimes find it cheaper to merge two or more half empty flights into one esp in low season, Air Serbia is probably doing the same here. SOP.

For example, Air Canada runs shuttle between Toronto and Montreal with as little as 30 minute spacing, using mostly Embraers and A319. But from time to time they would fuse couple of close flights and send A321, and even monster 777-300ER as a replacement equipment for one hour of flight time!

  20. I am looking at some pictures of SKP and I wanted to ask, does the airport have any remote stands by the new terminal? Or do they use the stands at the old terminal?

What happened to the old terminal building?

From what I know, the old terminal building is not in use at this moment, at least not for passengers.
I saw that some cargo planes are using the old building tarmac, so that might be some kind of terminal for cargo only?
By the new terminal I think there is at least one remote stand.

      On this pic:
      http://skp.airports.com.mk/StyleClientPages/EN/facilities_AirportMap-PopUp.htm
the VIP building is actually the old terminal. While the new passenger terminal and cargo were built few years ago. Is it really used and how often as a VIP I wouldn't know.
And it's a good question about the remotes. I don't think it's needed due to 6 air bridges.

For airplanes that aren't suitable for the use of air bridges, the same stands on the apron area of the new terminal are used for that, without the use of air bridges, and then the passengers head to the gates on the ground floor of the terminal building.

Air Serbia's HR team is absolutely the worst department in the company. A friend of mine applied for a position that did not require Serbian citizenship, so many foreigners applied (I know 4 of them).
He just received an e-mail from them.... in Serbian.

Citizenship and knowledge of Serbian language are not the same thing. You can be the citizen of Montenegro (or USA) and communicate in Serbian language.

    4. Um if someone applied to work at American Airlines, would you be surprised if they wrote to you in English? If you applied to Lufthansa, would you go around complaining if they wrote to you in German?

Air Serbia's applications are only in English so I don't get your point Aleksandar.

And by the way, LH has applications which are only in German for German-speaking applicants.
Positions that are open to non-Germans are in English.

LH call center for Slovenia is in Prague and the staff is with Serbian and Croatian language, with a lot of interference from Czech. No big deal. If you are tolerant and the main purpose is to communicate, than it is fine. If you want to show your language attitude from the prestige/dominant point of view than you have a problem.
