Belgrade Airport anticipates transatlantic boom

Transatlantic flights expected to boost passenger numbers at Belgrade Airport

Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport foresees a strong surge in passenger numbers following the launch of transatlantic flights from the Serbian capital next year. The airport’s Director for Development and Investment, Ana Luković, says the ultimate goal is to make Belgrade a regional hub. "We have seen a real boom since the national flag carrier was transformed. We expect to see another boom once long haul flights start”, Ms. Luković says. Passenger growth slowed in April, with Belgrade Airport estimating its figures will increase 5% in 2015 compared to last year when it added over a million passengers, making it Europe’s second fastest growing capital city airport.

According to Ms. Luković, the airport will spend fifteen million euros of its own funds in expanding Terminal 2 by building eight new gates and a new departures area. On completion in mid-2016, the terminal will be prepared to cater for long haul flights. "We are close to the limit of our capacities at the moment", she says. "That's why we decided to start a short-term investment cycle". Another two million euros will be invested in overhauling Terminal 1 and three million on new de-icing equipment. "Once this investment cycle is completed we will expand capacity to 7 - 7.5 million passengers a year", Ms. Luković concludes.

Serbia and the United States are expected to finalise bureaucratic procedures by the end of the year, which will pave way for the launch of transatlantic flights from Belgrade in 2016, the Serbian Minister for Construction, Transport and Infrastructure, Zorana Mihajlović, said recently.A new Bilateral Air Service Agreement between the two countries will be signed tomorrow. "Then we have to go through certain procedures and I expect for us to have an agreement for flights to the US by the end of the year, in particular to New York. We will discuss other destinations as well with Air Serbia”, Ms. Mihajlović said. Air Serbia has made it no secret that it intends to launch flights to the United States sometime over the next year.

Air Serbia’s predecessor Jat Airways conducted a study in late 2005 based on which it estimated it could carry up to 83.000 passengers to New York and Toronto on an annual basis. Jat Airways anticipated an average load factor of 74% and believed the flights would appeal primarily to diaspora travellers as well as transfer passengers from the former Yugoslavia, Bulgaria, western Romania, southern Hungary and the Middle East. Jat Airways planned to launch transatlantic flights in 2006 but was unable to do so due to Serbia’s category two rating by the United States Federal Aviation Administration. The country managed to secure a category one status last year, which is a prerequisite for launching flights to the States. JAT Yugoslav Airlines carried several hundred thousand passengers on scheduled services to the US and Canada each year during the late 1980s. Its numbers peaked in 1988 when it carried 227.663 travellers, of which 181.620 were between Yugoslavia and the United States and the other 56.043 between Yugoslavia and Canada.

Will there be any interest from Air Serbia to fly to Amman? JAT used to fly there and in the current situation in the ME, Amman is the main airport for many Syrians/Palestinians/Iraqis and it can be a perfect destination to pick up transit passengers going further to western Europe and hopefully to north America.

Let's face it, the whole Air Serbia network was shaped for transatlantic and long-haul flights and can't be profitable without those. So yes, i do believe they'll do everything possible for them to happen. Hopefully they keep BUD, numbers should go up once NA flights start. Also the 83.000 is a pretty modest estimate, i would put it a more than double.

BEG seems to have a decent security check. Upon landing in BEG police always await the aircraft to check documents, before entering the secured gate area there is also a check of documents. At check in documents are checked as well.

JU could step up their evening waves with CAI, AMM, IKA, ESB, GYD, TBS, EVN which could in turn feed the morning wave ex BEG. Having said that, MUC was something mentioned, as well as MAD or BCN.

Going by the waves, N. American flights would either be in the morning 7am wave or 6pm evening wave. If they want to have regional connectivity they will need to increase some frequencies to SJJ, SKP, SOF, OTP and TIA. I did comment a month or 2 back with what a schedule could look like with a 6pm departure.

I completely agree with that statement! I think that AMM and IKA or CAI would be the best options to start with. Beirut is definitely in the same category as AMM and CAI and it has proven to be a excellent choice since as we have seen it has had a higher LF than LHR in the first fourth months of this year.

      Delete
    9. SuisseOuest19:48

I agree with all of you: JU needs many more regional flights to be viable as a transfer option + BEG should really do something about security: current checks are annoying. Can't they separate incoming and outgoing passengers and do unified security checkpoint? Any chance of being able to transfer without going through passport check?
JU doesn't have enough high yielding O&D to disregard convenience of business (and premium economy) class connecting passengers who would choose convenience of connecting in a bigger airport (VIE, AMS, LHR, FRA, ZRH) over small price reduction offered by JU...

      Delete
    10. Anonymous21:31

There is no passport check when transfering.

      Delete
    11. There is a passport check for both transfer and Serbian pax. When you board a flight at every gate ASL ground crew check your documents. I went through this procedure last year with ASL 3 times, don't know if things have changed by now.

      Delete
    12. It's still the same. There is regular passport control, than passport check before security screening, and than (not always), when they scan your bording pass, just before boarding the plane.

      Delete
    13. Anonymous01:16

This is simply an ID check to see if the name on the boarding pass matches the person trying to board the aircraft, not the actual police-staffed passport control. JU ground staff does this.

Usually they mark or stamp boarding pass DOCS OK after going through this check prior to entering the gate area, and then only boarding pass is scanned before the actual boarding in order for the entire process to run smoother.

      Delete
    14. JATBEGMEL01:19

      @SuisseOuest

No need to pass passport control to transfer in BEG. Once leaving the arrival gate, if you have not received a boarding pass at the check in destination, you move over to the transfer desk to collect a boarding pass and head to the departure gate...just like in all other airports.

      @ YYZ, Coma

Documents are checked by police at the arrival gate. Not sure what for, Im assuming to ensure all pax disembark with necessary documentation.

Passport is checked at passport control points in both departures and arrivals, before entering the transit zone and upon leaving the transit zone like in all other airports. Passports and travel documents are also checked at the gate, also done at other airports (ie I had my passport checked before entering the gate area in DOH and DXB enroute to Australia). Boarding pass is scanned before the customer proceeds to the air bridge.

Final security barrier is the cabin crew inspecting the boarding passes for date of travel, destination of travel as well as flight number to ensure all matches.

      Delete
    15. Anonymous01:31

Documents are only sometimes checked at the arrival gate, I guess depending on origin - sometimes by the police (I guess this is to root out people discarding their documents in flight, possible asylum seekers, etc.), and sometimes by health inspectors (i.e. during the ebola outbreak, they were checking to see if pax is inbound from affected countries). However, in majority of cases, there won't be any checks at all.

Also, I think they done away with cabin crew check at air bridge gates @BEG. At least this is my experience from yesterday.

      ^^^

I guess your right. I notice it every time i land from AUH. They checked boarding pass and passport. That must be one of their target destinations? Belgrade and Serbia is seeing alot of refugees coming from Syria, Africa and what I assume, Afghanistan.

I dont think there is a procedure in Air Serbia like in many carriers where the boarding pass must be inspected before entering the ac. They just count the pax before closing doors to match the number provided on the PIL. My opinion, inspecting the boarding pass is better and easier. They just scan the boarding pass before entering the air bridge, tear off the larger part of the boarding pass and return back the smaller slip. This was a few days back. Is this what you meant?

      Delete

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I believe its not the gate/airbridge issue. Its separating incoming and outgoing passengers that they need to work on.

Prior to September 11th events, that wasn't a huge issue, but now security and all that bull have transformed most airports around the world.
Belgrade still mixes incoming and outgoing pax.

Don't quote me but I think passenger separation is a requirement if you want to fly to US from that airport.

      Delete
    2. Anonymous13:24

They are separated on ABG. You have security screening on every C gate like on separate wings on some European airports.

      Delete
    3. JATBEGMEL13:43

The wingspan on the DC10 is less than that of the A330. The issue in BEG is the tight spacing of gates means that 2 will be occupied to accomodate the aircraft. Also traffic was smaller then compared to now where its 5 million pax.

SIN is an example that has the same system as BEG where security is at the gates and departing/arrival/transit is not seperated, yet has flights to the US

Serbia and US have reached a principle agreement on bilateral back almost 6 months ago according to news published by Ex Yu Aviation back on Nov 28 last year. Zorana mentioned in March that agreement would be signed "in April" and then on March 28 she said "in the few weeks". It is not happening. Serbia is eager to start flights as soon as possible, so which side is delaying this process?

ASL wanted to start in 2015, then late 2015, then early 2016 and with this additional delay Summer 2016 season is highly questionable. For that reason airport might not have to be ready before MID (or even late?) 2016.

Reduced BEG growth estimate at 5% is a direct consequence of bilateral delay and consequent delay of transatlantic flights. One of (unintendend?) side effects will be delayed growth of ASL and more revenue for other transatlantic carriers.

Inflation of number of airline fare classes will continue to help market segmentation. Economy plus, business minus, economy minus and 50 more shades of this spectrum, plus innovative ways to bundle, upgrade and sell those products will offset traditional business/economy model, esp within larger alliance.

For example, Etihad FF's may be offered a stopover deal in Belgrade. Passengers who voluntarily enter (into future Air Serbia smartphone app) their preference for more legroom may receive special in-app offers to upgrade to seats with more legroom (row behind doors etc). Toronto family who are regular in economy may receive appealing targeted email offer to bid for upgrade to premium economy seats next time they go back to Serbia for a visit, etc.

It will be up to Air Serbia to understand their market and fine tune their future longhaul cabin and products to overcome lack of traditional business class demand.

Polar opposite of yawn, US approvals (from FAA Cat I to bilateral to DoT) are by far THE most dramatc part of Air Serbia (and to large extent Belgrade Airport) growth story. Looks calm on the surface and we have no idea what's happening underneath the surface (between two sides) but it's clear to see effects delays have on everything at Air Serbia. For example, fleet planning would have very likely be different if approvals were in place last year. So when fanboys ask "where are two more A319?!?", try to think and connect the dots back to this approval. Transatlantic flights would allow for more regional expansion, it would help turn the tide regarding other carriers vacuuming BEG passengers to their hubs, it would have an overall halo effect on Air Serbia image and it would grow revenue over time.

Several politicans on the Serbian side, Air Serbia and Etihad CEO are all in favor of launching USA flights as soon as possible as documented many times on this site and other media, but I can't find any statement from the US State Dept being eager to see those services.

The late arrival of the A319 was a disaster that even continues today. A bit of poor planning IMO. Now they will remove ac one by one whilst they install wifi on all A320 family fleet and that in the heat of the summer season, which could and should of happened before they arrived in 2013/2014. Remember that YU-APD sat months in MUC as an example.

Transatlantic operations will bring expansion if there is more ac to support it. Both A320 and ATR fleet is in shortage, the ATR more critical. Lets wait and see. Maybe 2016 leads to another big expansion.

"Transatlantic operations will bring expansion if there is more ac to support it"

It's the opposite, JATBEGMEL. There's a lot of money left in the purse but JU management is reasonably frugal in how they invest. Once TATL ops are a go, some additional frequencies/routes and planes would be warranted, same for other investments.

If that gold standard of aviation real estate (LHR slots - location, location, location!) opportunity opens up, I am willing to bet my last dirham JU/EY purse will have sufficient funds for that investment. So it's not about being just frugal, it's about know where and when to invest.

      @ AirCEO

JU is still reliant on government subsidies. Serbia isnt exactly Switzerland. Money could come from the UAE but at what cost.

Alot of money could be wasted on the Trans Atlantic opps too. It will take many months before an airline sees profit from long haul, and Belgrade isnt a high yielding destination nor does it now have alot of higher yielding pax, meaning for JU it will be a harder battle to bring the flights to profitability. I have mixed feelings on these flights. I am curious as to the thoughts, ideas and suggestions being brought to the table at JU management regarding these opps.

    4. Distance from Ajaccio to Belgrade is 984 kilometers, while ATR 72 - 500 has a range of 1450 kilometers, fully loaded. Which means - empty it would be able to fly beyond that.

Just over 30. Its the lowest I have ever seen the loads...

J was supposed to be 0, but last minute 2 checked in and J class catering delivered to ac during boarding.

btw AUH does see quite a decent amount of transit traffic. Noticed LJU, WAW, CPH, ARN, SJJ, OTP and FCO is something I see quite often.

      Delete
    5. Anonymous06:43

Anyhow with those loads in April/May period I see the route being suspended. I even think the route did better when it started. If I remember correctly, a month ago you said that on the outbound flight there were like 50 pax in Y which is still catastrophic.

I say BUD, AUH, WAW, and TLV are all on the cutting board.
