Maribor Airport scores new flights for 2016

Maribor plans links to Germany, Skopje and Pristina

Maribor Edvard Rusjan Airport, in Slovenia's north-east, has negotiated new scheduled flights for the 2016 summer season, which will see it linked to Dusseldorf. The airport's Managing Director, Ladimir Brolih, says the service has been initiated by tour operators in the region and will cater for all travellers heading to northern Germany. Mr Brolih notes that preparations for the flights are in their final stages and further details will be revealed soon. While the operator is yet to be announced, it is believed the German-owned Express Airways will run the service. The small airline has a flight school at the airport and offers panoramic flights over Slovenia, as well as seasonal commercial services from Brač and Split in Croatia to Germany and Sweden. It currently operates its flights with a leased ATR72-500 aircraft. Adria Airways has also expressed interest to cooperate and is still mulling the possibility of setting up a base in Slovenia's second largest city next year.

Express Airways' owner and CEO, Sefa Tuncer, visited Maribor recently where he expressed interest for the airline to link the city with Pristina, Skopje and Munich as well. "Talks are under way regarding these destinations, but there are no concrete plans yet", Mr Brolih said. The Managing Director recently revealed the airport was also in talks with Wizz Air but added that further analysis and discussions with the no frills carrier are required. Both northern Germany and Scandinavia have been identified as underserved markets from Slovenia. Maribor Airport handled some 18.000 passengers last year, the majority of which were flown on charter flights. It plans to welcome 35.000 travellers in 2015. During the first three quarters, Maribor saw 23.500 passengers use its services, up 51% compared to the same period last year.

This summer, Adria resumed flights from Maribor after fifteen years with a three weekly seasonal service to London Southend Airport. It is considering basing a single aircraft in the city next year, which would lead to the launch of new routes in Spain and, in the long run, Russia. "Adria Airways had good cooperation with Maribor Airport, which has emerged as a reliable business partner. We both hope to upgrade the service to London next year and add additional new routes", the airline said recently. Its CEO, Mark Anžur, added, "Flights to Germany are being considered and we see great potential there due to Graz’s close proximity. Even Spanish holiday destinations would be of interest. In the long-term, Maribor would be very appealing to eastern markets because of its short distance from many tourist destinations that would be attractive to Russians”.

I can not see market for Maribor-Skopje and Maribor-Priština flights!!!

On the other way Maribor-Munchen would be very good route, also seasonal to Split and Dubrovnik. If I have ATR I would put Zurich and Belgrade on the list, last one if they can make code-share with Air Serbia. Munich and Zurich can have success just if they can have at least one flight per day, for less than that people will use Graz and Ljubljana.

Purger, I guess you do understand LH flies MUC-GRZ 3 times per day, and that GRZ is 30 min drive from Maribor city centre?

      Delete
    7. Purger23:07

Of course I do. I am there at least once per month. So, what's your point? That is why I said at least every day flight.

    8. Anonymous06:55

If you compete with 3 daily flights 30 mins away, there is no way you can compete with a single daily flight. People choose flights mainly because of schedule or price - it's hard to cover connecting flights from MUC (which there are a lot of them) with a single flight.

Let's say you have a 2-day business meeting in Munich - you can depart with LH early morning, and come back late evening the next day and spend only one night in a hotel. If you have only daily flight - regardless of the scheduled time of the flight - you will need 2 overnights.

Adria should base a CRJ700 aircraft at MBX just like in Lodž. They could find 70 pax for many routes from MBX including Spain, Russia, Germany, GB... even flights to their southern bases could work.

Da bi JP letela s turisti iz Rusije na MBX je čisto smotrno, zaradi bližine (predvsem za ruse) priljubljenih turističnih destinacij oziroma toplic. Tukaj so Radenci, Rogaška Slatina, Podčetrtek, Laško... Te toplice so bližje MBX kot pa LJU. Potem pa so tukaj še Pohorje, Rogla in ostale smučarske in športno-turistične destinacije.

The area is one of the most depressed in Slovenia. Unemployment is rampant it's a social bomb.
Night time security is low:drunk, aggressive people around. It's way worse then any comparable city (by size) in depressed parts of Ukraine. I have been to both so I know what I'm speaking about.
Even pet-dogs are few compared to Ljubljana, Gorenjska region or the coastline.
Many people have no money for an extra coffee so they do not even walk in the city centre.
It's so depressive and if you don't have a government job (it used to be an industrial city) you are poor.
The only positive note is that the center is renovated because Maribor the European capital of culture in 2012.

OT: Do you think that 50 minutes is enough dor transfer at FCO? lloking to buy the ticket BEG-CDG and this is the cheapest option but I am worried a little if I can make it in 50 minutes

    1. Anonymous10:52

      Perfectly enough.

      Delete
    2. Anonymous12:19

If you have two separate tickets no way it's enough. If you have a single ticket it is enough but think of two critical spots at FCO. Security check in transit sometimes may be overcrowded and waiting time is up to half an hour (usually it's 10 to 15 minutes) the next critical spot is passport control for passengers arriving from non schengen zone. Waiting time is similar to the one at the security check. Also you'll need to walk between terminals for approximately 10 minutes.

Better pay 100€ more and fly direct. My opinion is allways fly direct if possible. I allways see passangers having problems transiting over ZRH, because LX is never on time in ZRH.

They are sending the A321 more and more often. Air Serbia is still at double daily to Paris so i think they're doing well. The ones that they are killing are Lufthansa and the Austrian group since they're both in the connecting market.

Thank you guys for your answers. At the end I bought the ticket for swiss since my mother is travelling and she doesn't speak english so I just wanted to be 100% percent sure she will enough time to change the planes. As for the ASL performance on the CDG route, from what I heard planes are always full, but mostly with connecting passengers. The RT ticket cdg-beg is never less than 270e, but I have to say that Wizz is also pretty expensive on it's Beauvais route

BEG-CDG on JU is primarily O&D, and the fares rarely go below 220 euros - on the other hand, AZ has offers starting as low as 130-150 euros.

If anybody is going to ZAG from YYZ in January/February l, KL/OU are selling dirt cheap tickets for app $580 canadian. I've never seen prices this low for any city in exYU, I paid more to go to Montreal last week and it is 500km away.

One other thing I noticed lately is that ZAG this year for the first time became the cheapest city to fly to, taking the top spot from BEG.SJJ seems to remain the worst.
