Wizz Air launching new Skopje flights

Wizz Air to introduce three new routes from Skopje

Low cost airline Wizz Air has confirmed the launch of three new routes out of Skopje Alexander the Great Airport for a total of 22 destinations next summer season with services to Berlin, Copenhagen and Bratislava. Flights to the German capital will be inaugurated on March 21, followed by Copenhagen on March 22 and Bratislava on March 28. All three will operate twice per week. Wizz Air’s Tamara Mshvenieradze said, ”Wizz Air has today once again underlined its commitment to Macedonia as Skopje’s hometown airline. We are thrilled to announce three new routes from Skopje to the capitals of Denmark, Germany and Slovakia, and we are confident that these three new routes will be as popular as the other 21 in our ever-growing Macedonian network. Seats on the new routes went on sale today and we urge customers to snap up the lowest fares on wizzair.com, mobile website or through our smartphone apps. Our Macedonian crew looks forward to welcoming you on board your next Wizz Air flight”.

The Slovak capital is just fifty kilometres east of Vienna, with shuttle busses running between the two airports. Austria is home to a sizable Macedonian diaspora, while Vienna is Skopje Airport's third busiest route following Istanbul and Zurich. Due to its costs, few no-frills airlines fly to the Austrian capital. Speaking to EX-YU Aviation News earlier this year, Skopje Airport said it was eyeing new markets in Western Europe, including Germany and Denmark. Wizz Air will have no direct competition on any of its newly announced routes. However, it will compete indirectly with Austrian which operates flights to Vienna. The Austrian carrier saw its passenger numbers decline 6% in 2014 , handling 98.602 travellers between the two capital cities.

This year, Wizz Air introduced thirteen new routes from the former Yugoslavia from four different cities and opened its third base in the region. In Macedonia, it based its third aircraft in Skopje and introduced five new routes from the capital. In addition, the airline inaugurated one seasonal and one year-long service from the country’s second international airport - Ohrid. During the first three quarters, Wizz Air was Skopje's busiest airline, handling 49% of all passengers. The low cost carrier will launch flights from Belgrade to Baden-Baden next summer, its first newly announced route from the former Yugoslavia for 2016.

    I can't get over the minister's stupidity. "The Minister added that flights to Budapest would allow Macedonian travellers to connect onto Wizz Air’s network of over thirty destinations from the Hungarian capital". He obviously hasn't got a clue how LCC function.

      I totally agree with you that the minister is a bit stupid (a bit being an understatement). However I dont think he is completely wrong. I have used W6 flights to Bergamo to connect to the FR network from there, even though both airlines are P2P.

    2. Anonymous10:11

      Anon 9:58 you were taking two completely unrelated flights. If your first flight was delight and you weren't able to take the next you would loose all your money and you would need to buy a last minute ticket.
      That is not a "connection opportunity" but a big risk.

    3. Anonymous10:14

      * Delayed, not delight.

      @anon 10:11
      I am completely aware of that risk, however if the ticket price is right I am willing to risk it. Of course, you will not book two flights that are only 2-3 hours apart, but at least 4. In Skopje's case you would try not to fly in the winter months when the fog is at its peak which leads to lots of delayed flights.

    4. Anonymous09:43

      How many times some of you will need this explication. Wizz got subsided only for the first six routes out of Skopje (the first big expansion in W12/13), and yes, the number of passengers on board did matter since they got a fixed amount of money + an allowance for each passenger. Also, I would like to remind you that the subsidies have expired a long time ago.

      Delete
    5. Anonymous09:46

      They signed up for new subsidies for 3-year period on 29 December 2014. European Commission has also expressed concern.

      Delete
    6. Wrong, also they was taken last year - so until now they was taked 2 times, but the last year subsidies was only for the newest route from Skp and Ohd, but this is nothing if we compare the risk factor and the subsidies.

      Delete
    7. Anonymous09:52

      Subsidies were offered for 5 new routes from Skopje and Ohrid - Basel. You can google it it's easy to find.

      Delete
    8. Anonymous09:54

      The maximum W6 can get from the government is around 5 mil in 3 years. Now, if any of you had the tinniest bit of knowledge, you would understand that 5 mil is almost nothing compared to the whole investment and the risk. Only one bad route (which they would have to serve for at least 3 years according to the deal with thw government) and they will be in the red.
      P.S. Let me reming you that only the new routes (the ones which started this summer) are beind subsidized.

      Delete
    9. Anonymous10:04

      Don´t get me wrong I am happy for expansion for both SKP and W6, but I remember there was subsidies to cover all new services for the next three years by government of MKD, which I also think is good to do, having no flag carrier that would create much more losses! ;) cheers!

    ECN-IST a few days ago with Onur Air, LF 70-80%. We were parked next to the technic hangars due to the lack of space at IST. Aircraft were piled up anywhere they could, one TK A320 was boarding right in front of the hangar on the taxiway. We were parked among cars (see photo). ECN airport is a disaster, sort of a warehouse and quite chaotic for it's small size, there is no internet. On the other hand food and shopping options are plentiful. ECN is served mainly if not exclusively by Turkish carriers with Pegasus and AtlasGlobal departing at the same time with us, both recording much higher LF. Thanks to the late hour arrival IST was quite empty so I was able to catch the last metro into the city. It took me 40 minutes from touchdown to getting out of the airport which isn't that bad considering how IST can be. Only the best impressions about Onur Air, from the booking
    process till the landing, airline modest but professional and well organized, you don't have the impression you're flying a Turkish airline. Candies were distributed during the flight and I was offered a free exit seats upgrade on check-in. Among interesting things about Onur Air is that they fly to places such as Erbil, Nalchik and Odessa so they might be a good choice for Serbian and other travellers out of IST travelling to those areas whose pricing is mostly prohibitive.
