Air Serbia and Croatia Airlines top EX-YU safety

Air Serbia and Croatia Airlines score high marks in latest global safety review

Air Serbia and Croatia Airlines have been ranked as the safest carriers in the former Yugoslavia, in an annual and acclaimed global review conducted by “AirlineRatings”. Croatia Airlines scored high marks on safety for a third consecutive year, while Air Serbia improved its standing on 2015. Both carriers received six out of seven stars for their safety procedures, ahead of Adria Airways, which settled for five stars. Montenegro Airlines received a ranking of four stars. With exception to the Serbian carrier, all airlines from the former Yugoslavia held onto their 2015 scores. On the quality front, Air Serbia had the best product, scoring five out of a maximum seven stars. Adria and Croatia Airlines followed suit with four stars, while Montenegro Airlines' product ranking is still pending.

Air Serbia and Croatia Airlines fared well in safety as they both successfully underwent an IATA Operational Safety Audit, are allowed to operate within the European Union, had no fatalities in the past ten years and are endorsed by the United States Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). However, the two airlines failed to receive a perfect score as their countries did not achieve top marks in all eight of the International Civil Aviation Organisation’s (ICAO) safety parameters. The eight ICAO audit parameters that pertain to safety are legislation, organisation, licensing, operations, airworthiness, accident investigation, air navigation service and airports. Serbia scored lower on legislation and airworthiness, while Croatia also received lower scores for legislation, as well as airports. These concerns do not necessarily indicate a particular safety deficiency in the air navigation service providers, airlines, aircraft or airports, but, rather, indicates that “the state is not providing sufficient safety oversight to ensure the effective implementation of applicable ICAO standards”, the regulatory body says. It should be noted that “AirlineRatings” scorecard for EX-YU airlines is based on ICAO's latest audits conducted between 2009 and 2011. Air Serbia improved its result on last year as its home country is now FAA endorsed. On the other hand, Adria's low score is attributed to the fact that Slovenia met only three of the eight ICAO safety parameters. The country scored below the global average in legislation, organisation, accident investigation and airports. Montenegro Airlines is not FAA endorsed and the country met four of the eight ICAO parameters. It scored below average marks on legislation, licensing and accident investigation.

Australia’s Qantas Airways has been declared the world’s safest airline for a third year in a row. Of the 407 airlines surveyed, 148 have the top seven star safety ranking but almost fifty have just three stars or less. There are ten airlines with only one star and these are from Indonesia, Nepal and Surinam. In selecting Qantas as the world’s safest airline, "AirlineRatings" editors noted that over its 95-year history the world’s oldest continuously operating carrier has amassed an extraordinary record of firsts in operations and safety and is now accepted as the industry’s most experienced airline. "AirlineRatings" is the first website to independently rate carriers on safety and the company’s rating system is endorsed by ICAO. The editorial team has won almost forty international and national awards and have also authored or co-authored more than 27 industry books.

It took the government 4 months to name the CEO of the Civil Aviation Directorate. So I'm not surprised with the low score since the ICAO parameters concern government bureaucracy.

Not surprised about Montenegro Airlines at all. They didn't have a head of safety department for almost a year. Some were even suggesting they would loose their IATA certification over it. They needed time to find the right party candidate for the job.

I also agree. Air Serbia offers a standard economy product in economy (although food is a bit better and you get a menu) and definitely an above average product in business.

Adria's service has gone down a bit and I'm not a big fan of their "buy a bottle of water from us" policy while their prices are still the same they were before. But their business is product is still ok with nice meals.

Croatia Airlines' product is standard and hasn't changed much over the years. Seats in economy are quite slim.

Not sure about Montenegro Airlines since I have never flown with them.

      6. Maknuti bombardier na relaciji za Bruxelles, stvarno
Je to prelose. Let traje skoro pa 3 sata s tim vragom. Srecom pa Brussels Airlines salje airbus.

Dubrovnik, Pula i Split moze.

    5. @Tim Tam - from the inside information that I have, OU will start 2x new destinations, and will use larger planes to fly to the current (more distant) destinations. Overall the # of flights should increase. By how much, remains to be seen...

@Anonymous 1:57 PM - true Zagreb is not a top/most popular european destination, but it's slowly getting there. It's becoming increasingly popular with the Brits, French, Germans, Spaniards, American and Korean. The fact that it's not yet established/perceived is due to the fact that Croatia is a young country. Numerous studies ( I work in tourism and I know this) show that Croatia is still relatively unknown in Europe and esp. resto of the world. However, the % of retained (returning) tourists is large as everyone is happy to return... Even as such, Croatia is visited by more than 14 mil tourists and has more than 70 mil overnights...
Zagreb is # town/city in ExYu in terms of number of tourists visiting...with the growth rate of 12% for 5 yrs in the row...

I can only imagine what will next 5-10, 15 yrs bring... And ZAG airport will be infrastructurally ready, as will all croatian airports that are undergoing major infrastructural developments.

    2. @anonymous 2:36 - Croatia & Zagreb are south/central Europe and bit in the Balkans- geographically for the most part, yes. Culturally, it resembles central and Mediterranean Europe, Balkans to some, but much less extent...

Based on my tourism experience and especially from attending the large tourism fairs in Scandinavia, the input from the traveling professionals that I get is that Swedish people as well as other Scandinavians positively perceive Croatia and clearly distinct it from the "East". Croatia is especially well positioned in Scandinavia when compared to Turkey for example...as that destination is perceived as "cheap" and "eastern/oriental"...as much as Turks have amazing hotels, nice beaches and improving service.

Zagreb & Croatia may not be the economical/touristic power in Europe, but are superpower in the Balkans, especially exYu with still great potential that hasn't being used.

As of today, Croatia still has an old /inherited "ex military" infrastructure that was brushed up during the 60s to resemble civilian airports.
With SPU, DBV, ZAG and PU building new terminals.. tourism in Croatia (leisure, business) will further explode.

Just to remind you: Zagreb #1 in Ex Yu, 1,1 mil tourists, 90% of which are Non-Balkan but rather American, Korean, German, French, British, Dutch, Swiss, Polish, Czech, Austrian...

Scandinavians will come too - as soon as ZAG as a product becomes available (direct flights)... don't you worry... :)

Nisi ti Svedani jedini sto putuju ;) .

Citaj malo sto pisem.
