Ryanair to launch Bratislava - Niš flights

Europe's busiest low cost airline, Ryanair, will launch flights from the Slovakian capital, Bratislava, to Niš Constantine the Great Airport this winter. It comes less than a month after the carrier began ticket sales for its Berlin - Niš service, which will launch on September 4 and mark the airline's entry onto the Serbian market. Ryanair will operate two weekly services from Bratislava to Niš, each Monday and Friday, starting October 31. Tickets are already on sale through the airline's website. The Slovak capital is just fifty kilometres east of Vienna, with shuttle busses running between the two airports. Austria is home to a sizable Serbian diaspora. Ryanair's Chief Commercial Officer, David O'brien, says the new route will carry 30.000 passengers per year and will create eighty on-site jobs.

Late last month, Ryanair's Route Manager, Luis Fernandez-Mellado, confirmed that the airline is considering expanding its operations out of Niš. "We are in the process of determining our schedule for next summer. Now that we have opened the doors to Niš, it makes it easier to expand. It will be something that we will discuss over the coming months", Mr Fernandez-Mellado said. He added that Niš is an appealing destination for Ryanair hubs which already sport an extensive network and are now looking to be linked with regional secondary cities, such was the case with Berlin. RFurthermore, the carrier said it opted to launch services to Niš following fourteen months of negotiations and as a result of Constantine the Great Airport's low fees, which amount to just three euros for handling, landing and passenger services.

Ryanair has a limited presence in the former Yugoslavia, with year-long flights to Podgorica and seasonal services to Rijeka, Pula and Osijek, as well as a summer base in Zadar. Closer to Niš, the airline plans to open a base in Sofia this winter season. As previously reported, Ryanair is putting a greater emphasis on the former Yugoslav market this year and is also considering flights to Mostar, Skopje, Ohrid and Tivat. Niš Airport handled 20.388 passengers during the first four months of 2016. It estimates welcoming over 100.000 travellers by year's end. In addition to Ryanair's services from Berlin and Bratislava, Wizz Air will launch its third destination from the city this summer, while RusLine Air will operate twelve charter flights from Kaluga in western Russia starting next month until early September.

Flight details for the new Bratislava - Niš service can be found here.

Ppl from Vienna usually fly JU to BEG and then taking the bus from Belgrade to Nis.
The bus from Vienna Erdberg/Hauptbahnhof to BTS airport costs €5 one way (there is another one for €7.50) and it takes 40-60 min. The line operates more than once every hour (even more than that in the noon/afternoon). You would be surprised how many ppl from BEG book flights from Nis because there is a huge difference between JU and FR fares and it's worth to transfer to INI.

Of course, 4 routes are nothing so far, but the FR strategy (I'm sure WIZZ's too) is aggressive and JU will start loosing pax very soon.

At the end, this is amazing for Serbian ppl, they will be able to travel for very cheap like other ppl around the Europe :)

OS and JU already used to have an LCC competitor in Vienna. It was Niki and they were flying straight to VIE, not BTS.

Back then, customers profited big time. Flights were cheaper than ever, all 3 carriers reduced their prices as much as they could.

And the outcome? Niki pulled out, duopoly returned.

So you may wish to wait a few moments before you start carving a tombstone for JU and OS.

    7. Anonymous00:59

Niki on BEG-VIE vs FR on INI-BTS, is not a good comparison.

I'd say JU will be really impacted: 1) below average product (i.e. AT72 2) mostly O&D passengers (at the moment, at least) and 3) an end of subsidies by year end, all spell trouble for JU.
OS will fare better than JU, but will still feel the pain.

      my2cents

      Delete
    8. Anonymous06:00

I did not say that Ryan will end up the same as Niki on this route. All I''m saying is that OS and JU did meet some competition on it before and guess what - they did not go bust. Just as they will not go bust now that the competition is back with its mighty 2 flights per week.

      Delete
    9. Anonymous07:55

The number of frequencies might not be 'mighty' but the airline operating them sure is. Remember that FR initially said that they would not expand until S17? Look at this, two weeks after Berlin they announced Bratislava. I am sure one or two more destinations will come.

This will primarily hurt Wizz Air and only then Air Serbia. Austrian Airlines will be fine because they can fill their three daily with transfers.

      Delete
    10. Anonymous07:58

Those two planes actually represent ~11% of additional capacity on this route and will likely soon become 3 or 4 flights.

OS has some flexibility to reduce capacity without changing the schedule (downgrade product from A319 to E195 to Q400), which is likely what will be the first reaction, but JU doesn't.

Nobody says OS and JU will go bust , but they will feel the pain on one of the most profitable routes.

Perfect move by Ryan and congrats again to INI.

It would be interesting to see the routes with the highest number of O&D passengers between Serbia and EU ( this is where Ryan would likely open a new route).

Perhaps Board didn't discuss it, but Austrian's manager for Serbia is (or at least, should be) looking at options to preserve/grow the business. One option ought to be flights from LYKV.

Ryan will be very successfull on this route. Depending on schedule, thos route may see a decent number of connecting passengers due to FR's network from BTS.
I thought last year that Wizz would be 1st to start this route.

      In any case, enjoy life.

    4. Anonymous20:02

Where do you guys think these 30,000 passengers will come from ? Some will be new, some from bus, but majority will be from Austrian and Air Serbia, and here is why:

      1. INI is closer than BEG for at least 25% of diaspora wh fly to VIE.
      2. Ryanair starts with ~ EUR 45 price advantage per passenger on a round trip basis (due to airport taxes only). I'd imagine that they also have significant cost advantage when it comes to crew, etc, which probably amounts to additional EUR 10 per passenger per round trip.
      Nobody can compete with that.

This route will be a hit. I can see increase in frequencies very quickly.

But, according to you two, aviation 'experts', Austrian will sit and do nothing about it.

Please don't choke while laughing out loud.

OS and JU should decrease their duopoly prices from 120 to 90-100 euros. That will be more than enough to stop the bleeding to FR - take Ryanairs bottom prices, add luggage, add two transfers to BTS, and there you go.

      Delete
    6. Anonymous00:52

You forgot to account for longer transfers to BEG as compared to INI for significant number of people.

Also, you assume that 100% of people check the luggage. FR's carry-on allowance is better than Wizzair's.

FR will bare open how much OS and JU have been ripping people off, which can't be good for any brand.

FR will have some ~10% of the capacity between Serbia and Vienna, OS ~63% and JU 27%. (rough estimate). I can see FR increasing frequency rather soon as this must be one of the more profitable routes alongside BEG-TGD and BEG-TIV.

JU will probably be more impacted due to product they have on the route and passengers who are mostly O&D (same as FR). OS is in better shape as it has connecting passengers, but will definitely feel the pain.

Anyone can reduce the price to defend the share and lose profits.

Before someone points how Niki was blown away, FR in not Niki.

      all the best.

Exactly, plus Niki operated into BEG where their expenses were higher and their brand recognition was non-existent.
One thing that might harm JU is the fact that they operate the Atr on the route while their 06.50 departure out of BEG is not particularly appealing- OS' 08.00 is much better.

Let's hope JU realizes that their own chance at survival in Vienna is to work on attracting more transfer passengers.

It will be interesting to see how Wizz will respond. Now somebody will say Wizz has bigger issues than INI (ex: FR massive expansion in SOF) which is true, but I am sure Wizz would do fine on routes such as Stockholm, Paris, Italian cities, another German route, etc. It is very unlikely that Ryanair will open the same route from INI as Wizz.

Congrats to INI from neighbouring SOF. Good to see the region finally moving. Ryan will hold a conference tomorrow in SOF, let's see how it goes.
