Belgrade Airport set for record July

Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport is on course to register its busiest July on record with passenger numbers estimated to reach 600.000 during the 31-day period. Acting General Manager, Saša Vlasaivljević, is confident the airport will welcome up to five million travellers by year's end and see its figures improve 3% compared to 2015. "We are currently at the peak of the summer season and it's our most successful to date since all indicators show July will be our busiest on record, as we expect to handle 600.000 passengers, which will be a first during a one-month period", Mr Vlasavljević says. On July 18, the airport surpassed its 24-hour passenger record by welcoming 20.417 travellers.

The comments come following a mixed performance during the first half of the year, during which Belgrade Airport registered 2.111.690 travellers, down 1.2% on 2015. "Despite the fact that during the first half of the year our passenger numbers decreased, our growth in the second half will be on the wings of Air Serbia's major network expansion. We expect to see a historic summer with numbers up in both scheduled and charter flights and our five-millionth passenger to be welcomed in early December", Mr Vlaisavljević notes. In June, Air Serbia introduced flights from Belgrade to New York, Hamburg, St. Petersburg, Kiev and Ohrid. So far, it has been decided for both New York and Hamburg to remain in the airline's schedule past the summer season.

During the first half of the year, the airport recorded a net profit of over eleven million euros. Its revenues increased 5% to 33 million euros, while expenses decreased 26% compared to the same period last year. The airport estimates its full-year profits will amount to between 26 and 30 million euros. It comes ahead of a planned concession of the airport in 2017. The Serbian Ministry for Transport and Infrastructure estimates the airport's current market value at 251 million euros. The French company Lazard Freres, which is acting as an advisor to the government, will decide whether the airport should be fully privatised or put up for concession, although it is believed the latter is the more likely choice.

      That is more than scandal.

      1. BEG is late with deicing platform for more than one year

      2. BEG is late for two years with so needed rebuild of A6-A10 gates, building new C7-C10 gates, new bus gates, 3rd floor, self luggage disposal. And one can not see any new deadlines, there is no plan for that.

      3. Air Serbia has plan to bring new planes, open new routes but BEG airport has plan no to invest in airport in near future.

      4. After those urgent investments they need to invest in hotel near airport (not in Sava centar) as BEG becomes hub and more and more people need to make sleepover + delays, new terminal (they publish plan for that), new luggage system as that one is on verge of collapse, and in 5-10 years period they should invest in 2nd runaway.

In same time BEG will invest in Sava centar instead of Airport?!?!?!?! They don't have money to invest in airport, but have money to invest in Sava centar?!?!?!

Passengers: to reach 5 million the airport needs to bring in 2,9 million passengers in the remaining months of the year. This is 900.000 pax MORE then in the first 6 months...now please divide that by a A320....

Profit: 90% of all tenders is still in July 2016 be done on the 2015 budget.
The results for 2015 has already been published and still purchases are being done against that result.....

If the turnover for the first 6 months was 33 million euro the full year turnover should be about 77 million euro and with a 30 million euro profit by the end of the year those numbers would put BEG as the most profitable airport in the world by far. What is the reason for a concession?!
This is a cash cow the world can only dream about.

I just hope that it will become trend and not just one positive month. For sure good July will not compensate those 100.000 lost. I hope that in August BEG wold be in zero, totally annul 100.000 minus, so with results on last year basis.

    2. Anonymous13:37

True but that was trend after Air Serbia huge expansion. It was not problem after several months, noone make alarm here because of few "winter" months, but now one can say it is trend, because it is 11 months in role. 100.000 is not "small" number. BEG would need July and August with very good number (more than 10% plus) to make it zero, and to hope September, October, November and December will make increase that we will have yearly increase.

    3. Anonymous15:22

Sorry but I still don't get your logic. The airport is waaaay above anything that would have happened if Jat was still around or finally dropped dead. 100k is an absolutely acceptable tremor if you take the previous developments into account. And it ends this month anyway, and turns back to growth. I really don't see any reason for panic when it comes to numbers in BEG - the problem is it mid-term and long-term strategy which is virtually nonexisting. Not to mention that the airport's management is probably the biggest bunch of imbeciles the international aviation has ever seen.

BUD became much bigger once MA collapsed, what makes you think the same wouldn't have happened in BEG?

      Delete
    5. JATBEGMEL16:11

Biggest thing having affect on BEG numbers is that the number of charters have dropped. Less tourists to Turkey, Tunisia and Egypt, which means less flights. You can notice the reductions to AYT, DLM and BJV. TU is only flying to BEG while JU used to fly to TUN, MIR and NBE. JU isn't doing charters to SSH and HRG, no flights to Taba and its been a couple years since there was charters to Aqaba.

Sure, other charters have come such as SKG, PMI, CTA, but I don't think its to the same numbers as previously.

I dare say that INI has also taken pax as well with the arrival of LCC. Sure, many have been taken from bus companies, as well as from the neighbouring regions, but I'm sure there is a small number from BEG as well.

What will be interesting to watch is if JU will reduce as much as they did last winter. This will affect the BEG numbers.

      Delete
    6. Anonymous17:44

      Anon 4:06,

It took BUD 3 years to overtake the pax number from 2012 (when Malev went bust). On top of that, they have a huge LCC that is headquartered in Budapest and has a lot of aircraft based in BUD. Where would Serbia find such local carrier?

Further, BUD loses money on a tremendous scale because LCCs who now fully dominate the airport simply do not generate enough revenue. Last but not least, Budapest is far more attractive location than Belgrade and Hungary is an EU country.

As I said, if Jat collapsed BEG would need at least 3-4 years to return to 3.7M pax from 2013 and another 3-4 years to reach 5M. With ASL it will go much faster + INI has been brought back to life.

  21. Here is little math on this subject. So far they had 2.112M pax this year. To reach 5M pax in 2016 BEG needs to record over 2.888M pax in second half. That’s almost 280K extra compared to the same months last year or 10.7% on average if my mats is correct. If July proves to be record breaking he stipulates with exactly 600K (11%YoY) the difference for the last five months drops down to 218K and the average increase needed is 10.6%. What’s the chance of this happening I don’t know. They did introduce NYC, HAM etc. + charters that weren’t there last year but it still seems too much to me.

He also mentioned reaching 5M in early Dec. For the sake of argument let’s assume they do have 600K in July and 168K by mid Dec (half of Dec 2015 +10%). To reach 5M by this point it would require 357K more pax in in those four months (Aug-Nov) or over 20% compared to same months last year.

We are talking about CEO that miss 2015 predictions for 10%. We call that than Jatovanje. You forget that, we laugh a lot about that.

    3. The 5 million mark is reachable, but highly unlikely unless the rumors turn out to be true that 2 A320 are coming in the winter months (again very questionable).

Charters are down by a lot of course even though there are more destinations now than before. Some of the destinations are operated by JU every 10 days so you do the math. Finally I remember 2-3 years ago there were around 6-8 charters to Antalya alone daily in addition to 3-4 flights to Bodrum and Dalaman. There were also more flights to Tunis and Egypt even thought these countries were a mess and still are to certain extent.

    4. My apologies, I wasn't following what's happening with charters this summer. I assumed that becouse of permits not being issued on time or at all, there is more flight this year.

Regardless,as it stands right now they'll have a tough time reaching 5M, especially by "early Dec".

Imho two new A320s seems unrealistic. They would have to be grounded most of winter. I don't expect Hamburg or some other new destinations to perform that well right away.

I don't understand where these rumours of JU getting an extra 2 aircraft - in the winter of all mths - come from. They cut capacity in the winter, like every other ex-yu airline. They went even further last year with their cuts and having proved it a profitable move, will also keep to the same strategy this winter. They needed extra aircraft in the summer, although with everything that happened this year across Europe, it probably proved a wise move not to bring in any additional aircraft.

So if they didn't bring any in during the high season, why on God's earth would they bring in any additional aircraft during the winter ?

Every airline in Europe is showing softening demand in Q3. Easyjet recently did something for the first time in their history - introduced promotional fares in August. LH has reduced its profit forecast and the same story continues across Europe.

And yet, people here work themselves into a frenzy believing that JU is going to bring in an additional 2 aircraft, especially against this backdrop.

If anything, they need to be getting rid of aircraft over the winter - looking for wet lease opportunities elsewhere.

Pls stop with these crazy ideas ....

The story is now slightly different as they have to find a way to fill the JFK flights all through the winter season. I think it will push them do try things other than just seasonal cuts.

I am one of those JU stipend managers in AUH and what I heard is that they need it because A319s are too small in summer. In winter they will be used on max two rotations until some 'older' a/c go into maintainance. Winter schedule is far from finalized and some exciting changes are coming.

The planning department here in AUH should have it published soon.

HAM is selling fantastically from day 1. Lots of p2p which help with yield.

I have been saying for at least a year that the ONLY reason to why BEG has such an impressive cargo growth is the war in Syria and unrest in Middle East. Many people probably know this, but never talk about it.

So what's the problem? It is not illegal trade, all these weapons go to Saudi Arabia and UAE completely legally and with the approval of big international players including Russia. What Saudis then do with the weapons, well I think we can all guess what they do, but again it is their responsibility with which apparently no one has serious issues either.

I'm not saying we should be proud of it, just pointing out there are no illegal operations there. And it is understandable that the state wants to keep low profile on it - anyone out there would do the same.

      Delete
    3. anon 5:50, I wanted to point out what is the primary reason for cargo growth in BEG and most likely other places in region. A couple of months ago there was a discussion on this topic and some people were in denial as to what is fueling the cargo numbers.

One school of thought suggested Sava Center news is BEG management looking for new jobs once concessionaire takes over, with SC staying outside of airport concession deal similar to ZAG deal.

That could be true. Management is free to go, but not to take 30 mil of airport money with them. What I am worried about is airport management now pushing for Public Private Partnership (PPP) so they get to keep airport jobs as part of government representation if PPP/concession deal is signed. They have shown incompetence in managing an airport, so it would be far better for concessionaire to completely get rid of existing management, bring in new professional manager (or make clone of Dane Kondic, one for ASL one for BEG) to do the right job within agreed guidelines.

OT: I flew today WAW-BEG on 737 YU-ANJ and I must say that aircraft is not at bad shape at all. You can see that is not brand new, there are here and there some proof of wear, seats are slim type, I think similar comfort like ones in A319/320, after reading so many bad comments here about old 737's I must say it was pleasant experience. I am sorry that I did not take photo of YU-ANJ as I am not sure when next time I will get AvioLet 737 instead of Air Serbia Airbus (yes I know that AvioLet is "Charter Brand" of Air Serbia)

I flew with one last year to Greece on a charter flight. Decent planes, but some people will always find black lining and reason why this is unacceptable. Never mind they don't apply the same standards to any other exyu company.

As addition to previous post, on Monday I flew BEG-WAW on A319 YU-APD and economy was almost 100% full, just 2 or 3 empty seats. Today was similar, not so full, but only around 10 seats empty in economy. Most of travellers in both ways are young people in early or mid twenties, looks to me that they are using flight for going to and back from Adriatic. Only few business looking guys.

Actually, YU-ANJ was always praised as the best B733. It's cabin is quite nice and it looks relatively ok. It's the other ones that are pretty bad, that is YU-ANK and YU-ANI. YU-AND is pretty ok.

Old. Most of them not in good shape. No business class. No wi-fi...

... in one word it is not in standard of A319/320, not in standard of Air Serbia and for sure not what people pay for (especially if they pay for business in A319).

      Delete
    5. Nemjee00:05

True but some like ANJ or AND are more or less ok on shorter flights (up to 90 minutes) where there is not much demand for business class. I don't think most passengers would mind flying to PRG on ANJ instead of any of the Atrs.

An airplane that serves primarily for charter flights should have business class? How comes? If there was someone flying business class on these flights, they would send an Airbus instead. But there was nobody. Why would they fly empty business class if they could fill entire plane with economy passengers? Excellent business move by ASL.
And what is the deal with wifi? Do ATRs have wifi?

There is no point holding Air Serbia to higher standards only to trash it.
