Flydubai to end Zagreb operations

Flydubai will terminate its service from its hub in the United Arab Emirates to Zagreb this January. The flights were initially cancelled from November until late December as a result of “operational reasons” but the service will now be suspended indefinitely. The carrier will maintain flights only during the holiday season between December 27 and January 15, 2017, when its last service is scheduled to take place. Ticket sales have been terminated past this date. The airline planned to operate the route three times per week this winter season prior to its decision to suspend services. Zagreb marks the first destination in the former Yugoslavia to be discontinued by Flydubai. Passengers who have already booked tickets are being informed of the cancellation and offered alternative transport.

Flydubai’s suspension will come just over two years since the route was launched three times per week in December 2014. The airline also provided a bus shuttle service between Zagreb and Ljubljana in order to cater for the Slovenian market as well. It faced no direct competition. The carrier says that despite its Zagreb suspension it remains committed to the European market. As a result, it will continue operating four weekly flights to Belgrade and Sarajevo, as well as two weekly services to Skopje this winter season. The airline is also considering launching flights to Podgorica next year.

As of January 2017, Qatar Airways will become the only carrier connecting Zagreb to the Persian Gulf with nonstop flights. On the other hand, Flydubai will be the second airline to terminate services to the Croatian capital this winter season, following Swiss International Air Lines, which will end its flights from Zurich on October 30. Unlike last winter, the Croatian capital will no longer be served by TAP Portugal which discontinued its service from Lisbon in March. Zagreb Airport’s management has said it will focus on securing new carriers once its new terminal is opened in March next year. So far, Monarch Airlines has announced the launch of its new services from both London Gatwick and Manchester next April.

Yes but we keep on hearing about Asian tourists in Croatia boosting passenger numbers or how Croatia has more passengers from Australia and so on. In the end, flydubai can't even make three weekly flights work.

Also, SJJ has quite a bit of competition, just look at the number of flights TK and Pegasus offer.

    3. With only 3pw how in the world they can be competitive enough to link passengers from Asia/Australia when there are 10pw by QR? Also, Bosnia is far more popular among Arab countries than Croatia.

Does Flydubai offer transfers or are they flying to Australia ?

So airline offers no incentives to Australian or South East, East Asian travelers, only location of their hub in Dubai. And you wonder why it didn't work ??

      Also flying trice per week?

Qatar has 10pw out of Doha, extensive network including Australia, South East and East Asia and this is the airline many choose to fly with.

Flydubai had a good go at it, didn't work for them, Emirates might try in few years time, but totally irrelevant, the fact that Korean Air, CapitalBeijing Airline and JAL fly to Zagreb and Croatia, and from 2018/19 most likely on a regular basis, we can say job done.

Would love to see Singapore Airlines in Zagreb to offer alternative to Qatar via Singapore, for Australian and EastAsian visitors, however with BA, KLM, Air France, Lufthansa, Austrian, Iberia and number of other carriers offering superb connections via European Hubs I am not worried.

Swiss is returning in April 2017, TAP too, SAS, Alitalia, AerLingus, Finnair, EasyJet, Aegean, all coming to Zagreb in 2017 and 2018, I think we can safely assume things will be ok.

Wow so many connections and so many important people you must know since you know what will happen for sure in next 2 years.

A lot less competition, Zagreb is covered by major EU airlines, Qatar flies to Zagreb 10 times per week, you also have strong Turkish presence with 10 weekly flights, was 14 up to recently.

Flydubai never had a chance, they offer nothing other then position in Dubai as a hub.

Zagreb is covered by all major EU carriers, SAS, Alitialia, Finniar, Aegean and few others still waiting to come in, but it is only matter of time.

Skopje is more of low cost base for Wizz air and not entirely sure of Lufthansa or any other EU carrier fly there, sorry for my ignorance.

Someone mentioned Skopje giving subsidies, I am not sure how much of that is true since it is managed by TAV, hardly possible, however Macedonian Government might be, totally different story here. If Macedonia wants to promote itself as a unspoiled nature reserve in the heart of Balkans, who am I to criticize them, after all it is absolute right for Macedonia to spend money on self promotion. It would be nice if Croatia did bit more of its own PR, instead of relying on Hollywood A listers coming to Croatia and promoting the country.

I mean such promotion is good, but it would be nice if Croatia had bit more of a PR strategy how to attract more visitors in to the continental parts of the country. And sorry John Malkovich won't do (he's parents are from Slavonia and Czech Republic, he has a house in Dalmatia and South of France). FYI

I mean, they don't even serve Australia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Vietnam,Sri Lanka, have one flight a day to Bangkok (as to TK two, QR I think 4 + Phuket), one to Singapore (QR has 3 I think), have incomparabely less seats, destinations and frequencies to India, Middle East. How in the world they can rule that market over TK or QR in Zagreb? Really, I'd like somebody to explain to me, really interested in hearing it.

      Delete
    7. Anonymous10:26

What you forgot to mention is that LH can rely on their Star Alliance partners such as ANA, Air India, Thai, Singapore Airlines... which are all fed by flights from Croatia.

OS is suspending DEL but AI is stepping in with their B788. That's how mama Lufty does her business.

    9. Anonymous10:52

Lufthansa suffered a few setbacks but they are from being defeated. Also, EK is also starting to feel the heat with their service going downhill for a few years and now they've announced that they will be introducing ancilliary fees.

So EK is not as strong as some like them to be.

      Cheers

You are the one who started comparing LH with EK, not me. I merely pointed out that LH still has a lot of reach in Asia through its Star Alliance partners and that just because they don't send their own metal to some places doesn't mean they are not present.

If anything is pointless then it's your arguments.

      Delete
    13. Anonymous11:47

      Anon 9:34,

I would say primarily due to so many connections between FRA/MUC and ZAG. This allows passengers from ZAG to catch convenient connection times. With one daily flight ZAG-DOH connections via DOH may take hours of layover - even longer than going back to FRA/MUC and catching a flight there within 80-90 mins.

On top of that add Qatar's prices and there you go.

TK dumping may have some effect but many passengers are simply scared to connect via IST these days. That may change, but not likely for another 3-4 months.

      Delete
    14. Anonymous11:52

Like Anonymous posted above it's about the amount of seats offered mixed with a high number of frequencies. If someone is looking at flying from ZAG to ICN then he will most definitely have MUC or FRA as a serious alternative.

You might not like the alliance argument but it's there for a reason, because it's a damn good one.

Finally, the first time EK is mentioned in at 10.38, that is in your comment.

    15. Anonymous12:02

Hm, I think LH has upper hand in Korea, Japan and partly China. Other than that, all of South and South East Asia with Australia is really far more competitive and sellable on QR vs LH and even TK. Plus Middle East with TK. LH group dominating in northern parts of asia is probably expected, also taking into logical geography, but the rest....I don't believe LH is dominating in places like Thailand, India, Malaysia, Indonesia, Dubai, and of course Australia. Why would then QR increase services all the time?

      Delete
    16. Anonymous12:18

I do wonder how well QR is performing on the route given that FZ is suspending ZAG and TK is reducing it. The market has obviously become saturated.

What ZAG need is Pegasus with some cheap fares to the Middle East.

      Delete
    17. Anonymous12:20

one guy above said that QR already considers pulling out of Zagreb as Lufthansa is taking all the business from everybody.

      Delete
    18. Anonymous12:22

well, TK must have issues with travel to Istanbul and Turkey as demand might have diminished - they made cuts world wide. As for FZ, QR has upgraded their services significantly during last two years so maybe they simply took enough of FZ business to not make it viable any longer. Of course, with TK and LH as well.

      Delete
    19. Anonymous12:26

But what does the future hold then? QR will secure an almost total monopoly on flights to Asia. Fares have already gone up since they launched flights.
Competition has never been a good thing.

I hope LJU manages to get FZ especially since the market is higher yielding than the one in ZAG.

      Delete
    20. Anonymous12:35

Isn't TK also part of SA? If it is such a good advantage for LH, than why not even better for TK?

      Delete
    21. Anonymous12:47

Because there are two daily connections ZAG-IST compared to 9 daily connections to ZAG-MUC/FRA.

Plus more connections to VIE if necessary.

    22. Anonymous12:54

Fares gone up? You can buy nearly all points in Asia throughout winter at very good prices and every now and then QR has deeply discounted promotions. What high fares are you talking about? Travel in summer on any airline out of Zagreb it is costly as all are full, but during winter when holiday season to Asia is, QR, TK and LH offer really lower fares compared to before.

I don't understand this celebration of LH. LH is fighting LCCs, ME3, internal disputes and strikes, has questionable pilot selection procedures. Its own pilot flew a plane full of passengers deliberately into a mountain. LH was forced to introduce bare-bone service recently. I don't see much positive there.

TK is in a temporary crisis, because of recent developments in Turkey.

      The LH crisis feels chronic.

LH treats smaller Star Alliance companies not as its partners, but as satellites. Croatia has so much potential. I think OU lost a lot of potential holiday market by subjecting its plans to LH general strategy.

I am pretty sure they are at least in talks to each other.

But why not MBX? This is one of a few routes that actually might work and develop positively from Maribor. No competitions anywhere in the area to the Emirates until Vienna. No flights there from Graz, LJU, ZAG, whole northern Croatia or Hungary till BUD. If they could offer some 4 EUR airport taxes and if LJU is deemed too expansive by FZ, same like ZAG and GRZ then it has real potential. It would attract whole Slovenia, Southern Austria and Northern Croatia which in total are many millions of people.

Hahaha... they moved away from ZAG...and they would go to MBX? Well, don't count on it..not in this millenium :)

    4. Anonymous21:31

Nobody says they will. It is about potential from MBX if they offered similar tax rate like TZL and INI. MBX is right in middle of area totally unserved to the UAE. That is a fact.

You say that they terminated flights because of Qatar competition... Nonsense, they have triple competition in Belgrade (Qatar, Etihad and Air Serbia), 18 weekly flights if I'm not wrong, but they're still flying, and having great loads.

Don't forget TK and their 14 weekly flights. They don't fly to Australia but they do fly to Asia and Africa.

Also, they downgraded PRN, SJJ and ZAG but not BEG.

    2. Anonymous11:53

LH/BUD factor is far more serious threat to FZ in Zagreb compared to any headaches EY/QR/BUD factor may be giving them in Belgrade. This cancellation clearly shows it.

    3. Anonymous12:20

You know what would be interesting to know, how expensive are BEG, ZAG and BUD when compared to one another. Maybe a reason why BEG is performing well is because they got a better deal than they did in ZAG.

    4. Anonymous12:38

While we are there, could you please provide the BUD profits for the last five years? Thanks in advance.

As far as I know, BUD loses money left and right. Huge losses since 2012 - in spite of recovery of pax.

And their prices are higher than BEG. Don't remember 100% but I think what BEG charges 18.50 euro to legacies (service+security) BUD charges >20 euro.

FZ is not stupid. It is not a secret QR will either use 787 or go double daily in ZAG from next summer. Long term perspective in ZAG is not looking good for them there. Plus TK is definitely dumping a lot and heavy star alliance competition is much bigger than in any other ex yu airport.

      Delete
    8. Anonymous14:11

787 to ZAG? I really doubt it. Maybe A321 on all flights. 787 are used on more important routes such as VIE, MAD.
They do 2x daily OTP with A320 and it´s a much much bigger market.

      Delete
    9. Anonymous14:41

Not sure. 7x 787 or 14x A320 pw - both is possible. Depends on aircraft availability and strategy.

    Dear friends,
I really think we should learn something from today’s discussion, and that is how we should all love our country and be happy with whatever happens. For example, today we can see that flydubai is leaving because it is the worst airline in the world with no recline seats, cause competition is so good in Zagreb that from now on they will have only Qatar airway flying to the middle east. That Turkish airline reduction in flights is cause of their own incapability and that even thou Swiss and TAP left they will for sure return next summer with bigger and better planes.
So a big lesson for all the nationalities on this forum how we should respect our country.
    Thanks for that.

Having an airline leave is not always a good thing. Remember that less competition and options leads to higher rates and less people flying. Maybe not everyone wants reclining seats and you cannot simply name it "the worst airline in the world" because there is no such thing.

The problem of ZAG is lack of outbound PAX. The traffic is relying on inbound pax heavily and seasonal. How many of your family and friends have been on holiday on long haul from Croatia recently? We don't have a culture of holiday abroad. Majority of the populations here has never even flown anyway.

Some claim that JU is performing so badly in ZAG yet this winter they will fly there 12 times while LJU was reduced to 11. Yeha, they are flying empty there.

I think this completely puts under question the rationale and financial justification of ZAIC and the French airport terminal. Proof is, as far things go, the current terminal is actual more than enough to handle the current amount of flights + for at least 5 years to come. Maybe it should have just been refurbished instead of indebting the Croatian taxpayers with few more hundreds million Euros for an airport that'll be sitting empty, unless they plan on using it as a tourist landmark. My two cents.

    Replies
    1. Anonymous18:49

Could they maybe just add a few more gates to the old terminal? Just to expand it? It could be much cheaper at least until they see what will become of OU.

Also, if/when OU bankrupts then what?

  23. OT: Yesterday my brother flew YYZ-CDG with AC and CDG-SJJ leg with JU. He was amazed how good the service and food was aboard JU flight. In his words, AC food was sh** compared to JU. He also reported packed Airbus on the CDG-BEG leg which is great for end of September. On the other hand, several people here commented that CDG is one of the best performing routes for them, so that’s was not surprising

Sad to here about them leaving Zagreb. They were very convenient for P2P passengers like myself although I must admit they were not always that full (at least the last few times I flew with them). Now we will need to fly via Doha or Istanbul to get to Zagreb.

    1. Anonymous23:58

Yes, only Doha or Istanbul for you. For other passengers in Zagreb there is a double daily connection with a nearby city that has double daily connections to UAE. (wink, wink, nudge, nudge) From that city you can fly to two other continents beside Europe. Isn't that just great?
