Zagreb Airport's new terminal opens

Zagreb Airport's new passenger terminal went into commercial use this morning. Following three years of construction and over a decade of planning, passengers flying between Zagreb and Dubrovnik this morning on Croatia Airlines' flight OU660 were the first to use the new 236 million euro facility, which stretches over 65.860 square metres and three levels, features three baggage carousels, eight air bridges - six for international flights and two for domestic services - nine security checkpoints, thirty check-in desks, 23 passport control booths and a car park with the capacity to handle 1.100 vehicles. Over 1.000 construction workers were involved in the project each day. The opening of the new terminal was made possible after the Croatian government concluded a thirty-year concession with a French-led consortium. "We are delighted that our aircraft was the first to depart from the new terminal. We actively participated in all testing phases and we hope that passengers have a comfortable experience travelling from the new facility. Our aircraft will link Zagreb with five Croatian and 24 international destinations this year", Croatia Airlines' Head of Sales and Marketing, Boris Kolka, said. The first flight to land and dock at the new terminal was Qatar Airways from Doha.

To mark the occasion today, Zagreb Airport launched a new web site, while Air Serbia upgraded its equipment from a 66-seat ATR72 turboprop to a wide-body 254-seat Airbus A330-200 aircraft. Commenting on the new facility, the General Manager of Zagreb Airport, Jacques Feron, said, "The new terminal will certainly become another recognisable symbol of Zagreb and Croatia, and will benefit the city's tourist potential, providing it with a modern look. Throughout the region, the new terminal stands out for its contemporary design and modern technology and infrastructure. It is precisely because of this progressive technology that all customers using the terminal - passengers, airlines and vendors - will have the highest quality of service". The new terminal features several different retail brands run by Turkey's BTA Food & Services Group. They include Cakes & Bakes, Spread, Pom juice bar, Cafe Nero, Brewmark pub, Needstop, Antonia coffee bar and From Designers with Love store, which will be selling Croatian products. Furthermore, France's Aelia runs a 600 square metre duty free shop. The airport also features the PrimeClass Lounge for first and business class passengers. It stretches over 323 square metres and has the capacity to accommodate 84 guests. It includes a self-service buffet, Wi-Fi Internet access, business area, TVs and a relax area with massaging chairs. The PrimeClass lounge is a staple of many TAV-operated airports.

Further development of Zagreb Airport is planned as passenger numbers continue to grow. The terminal in its current shape and form has the capacity to handle five million travellers per year. Once this figure is reached, the western side of the departure area will be extended and new gates added. Following this, the eastern departure area will be extended with three new gates once the airport reaches 6.1 million travellers, while further development will involve the extension of the eastern departure area with another two gates and the possible extension of the apron once 7.3 million passengers are welcomed. Local authorities plan to extend the city's tram network to the airport, with work expected to begin in 2019, while a new hotel will be built across from the terminal building and will be directly linked to the facility.

Zagreb Airport development through the years

In the summer of 1943 the German Army started work on a 1.800-meter-long paved runway and a number of taxiways near the village of Pleso. The airport was used exclusively for military purposes. In 1958, the government ordered for the army vacate part of Pleso Airport for commercial traffic. A year later, a new passenger terminal was built. The airport would subsequently expand over the next three decades with a new terminal, apron and taxiways built. For a full history of the development of Zagreb Airport, including photos, click here.

This year has started strongly for Zagreb Airport with Emirates announcing the launch of daily flights from Dubai with its wide-body Boeing 777-200 aircraft, Monarch Airlines plans to launch services from London Gatwick and Manchester and Air Transat will boost its operations from Toronto to the Croatian capital. "Other increases include the doubling of Iberia flights between Zagreb and Madrid, as well as a 70% increase in operations and capacity by Czech Airlines and LOT Polish Airlines from Prague and Warsaw respectively. We are also a proud partner of Croatia Airlines, which holds a 55% passenger share at the airport, and significantly aids the airport's connectivity. During the summer, the carrier will introduce four new routes", Mr Feron said. Zagreb Airport anticipates handling over three million passengers this year.

Zagreb Airport will now focus on attracting new carriers and quickly growing its passenger numbers. "We believe that the opening of the new terminal will broaden our goals. We aim to handle more passengers in the coming period, up to five million and then up to eight million in our next development phase. In order to achieve this, we have to attract new carriers, open new routes and destinations, and make our airport even more competitive", the General Manager noted. The Croatian government is currently negotiating the introduction of flights between Zagreb and the United States for next year.

Zagreb's new terminal will expand in stages, from 2a to 2d initially, however longer term plans to to add 2e and 2f expansions as well.

2a and 2b will be added as soon as terminal passes 5 million mark. and 2C and 2D once terminal passes 7 million pax. 2e and 2f are planned stages that will see expansion of the main terminal building by 32000sqm and additional 4+4 passenger boarding bridges to the east, extending eastern pier by additional 175m to total length of 755m.

Stages 2a through 2d will see terminal extended by 255m on both sides, for total of 16 passenger boarding bridges and 24 gates. 3 of these will be for wide body aircraft capable of accommodating additional 5 narrow body aircraft or 3 wide body aircraft.

When final expansion is completed 2e and 2f, new terminal will have 24 passenger boarding bridges, 3 of which are for wide body aircraft and designed capacity of 12 million pax.

I agree they should have tried a bit harder. It's not every day you open a new terminal while shutting the other one you had. I also checked the webcam option but its only the old terminal. As far as I can see there are some planed parked in front of it... unless it's an old screenshot.

Nice building but let's hope the management wakes up and does something as the airport has underperformed in the first two months of the year. I am curious to see how it will perform in March.

Also, I read yesterday that QR will send its A320 in winter. Wasn't it supposed to be an A321 on some days by default from summer 2017?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Anonymous09:33

QR did not plan to use 321 during winter anyway if I am not mistaken, only during summer schedule. So no changes there.

      Delete
    2. Anonymous09:34

I think only three or four flights were supposed to be with the A321, the rest with the A320.

      Delete
    3. Anonymous09:39

Summer schudule is/was planned as a mix of 320/321 while winter all 10 weekly with 320.

      Delete
    4. Anonymous09:45

Yes, initially bit that was later on revised. Those A321 flights in winter were loaded in the system for a short while. It's a prudent decision, no one can argue with that. They can beat EK with a higher number of frequencies.

      Delete
    5. Where exactly did it under perform since it had less number of flights, but more passengers?

      Delete
    6. Anonymous11:11

It underperformed in comparison to other ex-YU airports.

      Delete
    7. Anonymous11:13

      Explain than this to me:

      BEG

      January
      a/c movement: +3%
      Passengers: +13%

      February
      a/c movement: -5%
      Passengers: +6%

      2017:

      a/c movement: -1%
      Passengers: +10%

      Delete
    8. I'll try again: If there were less flights than last year, but there were more passengers, how did it under perform again?

      Delete
    9. Anonymous11:17

I'll try again as well, it underperformed in comparison with other airports in ex-YU. Look at LJU, SKP, TGD... all had over 10% growth but ZAG didn't. Means it underperformed regardless if there were more or less flights.

      Delete
    10. Oh! So it's not the same percentage of rise in passenger numbers, do therefore it under performed? Hilarious, dude. You can talk about under performance when you'll have same or more flights, but same or less passengers.

      Delete
    11. Anonymous11:22

Sure, sure... how much was the drop in flights? 10%? 15%? ;)

If ALL ex-YU airports had at least 10% growth and ZAG didn't then it means there is something wrong. Look at LJU, they didn't have that many more flights but their passenger numbers are rising.

      Delete
    12. Anonymous11:23

SKP didn't have that many additional flights either.

      Delete
    13. No wonder BEG had that much increase since this time last year, they were in red. And if it makes you happy and you really like to get off at these numbers and thinking that there's "something wrong" at ZAG, be my guest. Whatever rocks your boat, bro.

      Delete
    14. Anonymous11:26

Even when compared to last year BEG added a great number of new passengers, so not only that we compensated what we lost but also added new ones. So your comparison doesn't stand.

I presented facts, you presented... well nothing really. The fact is that winter demand for ZAG is what it is now. Unless someone starts building a hub it ain't gonna grown much more than this.

      Delete
    15. Anonymous11:55

How a 24 month comparison looks like?
2015 to 2017 for these airports?

      Delete
    16. Anonymous12:17

Let's take a five year period:

      ZAG:
      2011: 2.319.098
      2016: 2.766.087

      BEG:
      2011: 3.124.633
      2016: 4.924.992

Makes little sense to compare it with 2017 which has only begun. What we can do is to compare the number of extra passengers this year:

      BEG: 55.377
      ZAG: 13.281

      Delete
    17. Hon, you've presented a bucket of venom. The fact is the flights number were down, the number of passengers were up. If it didn't meet your standards of traffic rise yoy, that doesn't make it a fact. It makes it your personal opinion that matters to - well, no one. But as I said, whatever rocks your boat.

      Delete
    18. Anonymous12:44

It's ok, I understand why you are behaving like that. I wouldn't feel comfortable knowing LJU, SKP, DBV and SPU are going to handle soon as many passengers as ZAG.

      Delete
    19. Anonymous12:59

Anonymous 12:44, as long as we have options to travel from several airports in Croatia to other parts of Europe/world, I honestly couldn't care less about ZAG/DBV/SPU pax numbers

    20. Danijel15:53

Ljubljana will not handle passengers like Zagreb will any tike soon. But I dont understand why is that important. And I expect more rise in passengers number with those new OU lines.

      Delete
    21. Anonymous16:15

I hope those routes end up being successful and that OU keeps them in winter. I mean most of them could survive the slow season, no?

I think if LJU has Wizz expand there then they can easily pass 2 million.

    22. Great reply Anonymous at 12:59 PM! I honestly don't understand this weird way of thinking that some people have, whereby the failure of an airport in the neighboring city, or country, somehow means your success. Or gives you pleasure. And I doubt that these people are stakeholders, lol! Not that the Zagreb airport has failed. If the passenger number rose, in spite of significantly less number of flights, that means the demand is there and there should be more flights. In no way is that a symptom of failure. It's quite the opposite. I'm guessing the number of flights had dropped in these past couple of months, because of the move to the new terminal, the adjustment period and those large scale test runs.
As for Ljubljana, Sarajevo, Split, Dubrovnik...etc. I wish them the best of luck!

For the rest of us as consumers of this particular service, competition is a good thing. Leads to more options, better service and lower prices.

New terminal will bring more airlines like Air Transat and Emirates. On the other hand it means there is no hope for Croatia Airlines long haul.

Umm... think again my friend. He is one of the most prominent aviation experts in Croatia.

    6. Anonymous22:04

Yeah, surely he is, but he is not only aviation expert in Croatia and his opinion is just his opinion. So, Purger is always right and all people (from government, minister, workers from OU, MZLZ) they are wrong? c'man guyz, don't be silly.

  27. Awesome! Think I'll book a flight one weekend before my summer vacation, just to check it out!
Fingers crossed Zagreb for the fastest possible adjustment and good luck!! This year's peak of the summer season could see the passenger numbers skyrocket.
Also congratulations to the management and the entire team, since for such a huge operational move, things seem to have gone seamlessly! And a significant portion of it went down quite literally over night!
That could not have been easy!
    See you soon, Zagreb!!!

      seriously?! lol

    2. Yes, seriously. Why is that so funny?? Wouldn't be the first time I visited Zagreb for a weekend, I have family there. Besides you folks seem to constantly obsess about passenger numbers, and then you laugh. I'm going to contribute to those numbers. :)

Nice! No wonder they added a fourth flight. Let's hope for a fifth one soon.

      Were the passengers mostly Serbs?

    2. Anonymous16:29

No, plenty of Arabs and Asians, Serbs 50%. Saw many Croatian passport holders.

Probably from Osijek and eastern Croatia, those are common at BEG.

Needs a lot of work, when I say a lot. Hopefully in coming days they sort it out, also they need to put statistics page back and install camera so ppl can watch the planes.

      Delete
    2. Statistic page is there. Look for the business tab along the top. it will take you to the page where you'll find statistics.

Unfortunately it looks like there will be no webcam.

The new website like many these days is clearly designed for smart phone/tablet users. Its not what desktop users are used to and can as a result not be as popular for desktop users. Seems to be true for many websites these days.

  32. Again Qatar had an early arrival into Zagreb this morning.... So it looks like they have changed the evening flight to a early morning flight.

I don't think it improves on connecting times from anywhere... but I could be wrong.

    2. Anonymous07:28

haha, you are dead wrong, this departure 1AM from Doha actually connects nearly all of Asian, African and Middle East destinations, something that previous 1PM connection failed to do. This is way better connectivity wise. Now their 1AM and 7AM departures from Doha connect to all of their network perfectly. Also on their way back to Doha.

      Delete
    3. Cool.
Thought it would connect better but wasn't getting much luck from a few Asia places I put in as an experiment like Seoul and Shanghai.

      Anyway, good to know.

    4. Anonymous09:00

Yes, that flight connects perfectly from Hong Kong, singapore, Kuala Lumpuir, Bali, Colombo, Maldives, Joburg, Jakarta, Vietnam...I think the later one (7AM) is for Korea, Japan, rest of China and Australia.
