New Belgrade Airport control tower unveiled

NEWS FLASH

The design of Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport's new control tower has been revealed by the Serbia and Montenegro Air Traffic Services Agency (SMATSA), which will fund its construction. Located next to the existing air traffic control centre, opened in 2010, the new four-level control tower will be 75 metres high. A two-level flight control centre will also be built and linked to the tower. Commenting on the planned project, the head of SMATSA, Radojica Rovčanin, said, "The existing control tower in Belgrade was opened in 1962. The rapid development in traffic in recent decades has called for the improvement of the city’s air traffic control system. When the current Belgrade control tower opened, only some 300 aircraft used to fly over the country. Today, we handle the same number of aircraft in just one hour”. He added, “Therefore, we need to make technological improvements to Belgrade Airport’s control tower and, in doing so, we will do our best to make it a building that will dazzle with its height, luxury, style and beauty". Construction of the tower will begin in the autumn of 2018 with the structure to be completed and operational within a year. In 2016, SMATSA completed work on the reconstruction and expansion of Tivat Airport's control tower.

  3. What does the amount of aircraft flying over a country have to do with the control tower? Area control is not located within the tower - the tower is there to control approach and ground movement at the airport. I'm wondering what maneuvering surfaces they'll be able to see from this tower - I suppose not much.

      1. They are moving the tower to that spot so that they can see everywhere.

      2. Belgrade airport is home to the regional Eurocontrol office which handles the traffic in this region. That's the small building next to the tower.

    2. 1. They can see way less than from the current point
      2. I still don't get what the tower has to do with handling traffic over the region

It's your problem you can't get it. An air control centre is being built together with the tower.

      1. Wrong, now they can see the whole airport. Do you even know where the tower will be located? This one is much higher and they can actually see the C gates.

      2. Well Google is your friend then, I tried.

    5. 1. This is the vintage point from 125m height https://usnimi.me/jgj. The tower will be 75m, there's no way you can see the C platform from there (tails only maybe) and for RWY30 you'll need strong binoculars.
      2. Googled: So they're not building only the tower, but also Belgrade ATCC?
      3. How are the upgrades from VORs to DVORs and ILS replacement with ILS/DMEs and new ILS/DME going?

      1. This will be 75M high, of course they will be able to see more

      2. it says in the text above everything that they are building.

    8. 1. More than what? You really think they will be able to see the C platform from their vintage point?

^ do you realize where the location of the new tower will be? It will be closer to the C platform than the current tower.

    10. Yeah, by full 9 meters! Measure it if you don't believe me.

So if the new tower is closer to the C platform and 25 metres taller than the existing tower, from which you can see the C platform just fine, how did you conclude they won't see it from the new tower?

    12. You can see the C platform from the current tower? Really? https://usnimi.me/s6A

Yes you can. The tower has 360° view. This is one part. Also you can't measure the distance of old/new tower with a ruler on google maps.

    14. The point is that the terminal building blocks the view of the C platform. You can only view the taxiway. As for measuring using Google Maps - LOL!

Now that the tower will be moved they should tear down all gates from A6 and build a,new terminal.

me neither. looks pretty anonymous. nothing too "dazzling" about it unless one has a very excitable nature. still, it's more important that it's operative and functional than appealing to the eye.
