It is actually crazy to know that Split has to turn down airlines especially on Saturdays, because they need so big separations due to missing taxiways. They should work on this even before terminal expansion.

If management would be "normal". For them most important is head count and be regularly in media as record breaking. And taxiway doesn't help getting more heads through terminal. Their only hope is to get new manager after last months tender. Yes, they have huge traffic but it is no way result of great management; procedures are from seventies/eighties, and tourists has just found out that Split is not only point of transfer to islands but also to stay. Croatian tourism dream: just sit under olive tree and wait for tourists to come...

So so far they welcomed 1.529.348 passengers while Zagreb welcomed 1.687.474.

OMG so next month SPU will actually overtake ZAG as the busiest airport in the Jan-Aug period!

      Actually thee months.

September and October too. Zagreb could hit 2 million at the end of August, but strike might jeopardize that. Split will handle around 2.3 million.

However Zagreb is expected to expand fast in winter months, and next year especially as number of new carriers are coming.

Zagreb is projected to git 3.7 million pax next year. Split 3.2 million

If we are to look at your past projections, wasn't ZAG already supposed to be at like 4 million?

      Very likely scenario in 2020,

      Zagreb: 5.1 million
      Split: 4.1 million
      Dubrovnik: 3.3 million
      Pula: 1.1 million
      Zadar: 1.0 million
      Rijeka: 320 000
      Osijek: 100 000
      Brac: 40 000
      Total: ~15.06 million

Runway isn't the problem, weekends are, as this is when Split Airport has its rush hour, 120 landings 30 000 passengers.

If Split airport could spread out weekend traffic over entire week, that would make things a lot simpler.

As to taxiway, it'll be built in 2020, as soon as land issues are resolved. There are ~40 homes that need to be demolished and legal cases are in local courts.

Split offered 1.5 million kuna for each property, way above market value for properties right on the airport doorstep and few properties illegally built on airport land, so they'll be knocked down first next year.

If all goes well, new taxiway should be ready for 2020 summer season. Runway might get lengthen a bit as well and Cat IIIb instrumentation and landing system installed

Dubrovnik Airport plans the same, CAT IIIb and taxiway to be completed.

      @JU520 BEGLAXAugust 3, 2017 at 5:07 PM

2.3 million definitely, perhaps 2.35 million.

      This year,

Zagreb - ~3.1 million (could hit 3.2 million)
      Split - ~2.8 million
      Dubrovnik - ~2.3 million
      Pula - ~700 000
      Zadar - ~650 000
      Rijeka - ~170 000
      Osijek - ~40 000
      Brac - ~20 000

      Total: ~9.8 million

Zagreb will grow really fast once LCCs come to Zagreb in big way, EasyJet, Vueling, Voltea, Transavia France, Norvegian, Air Europa, Monarch, FlyBe, Air Baltic. ...

However, airport management strategy is first to bring major LCCs in to Zagreb.

SAS, Alitalia, Aer Lingus, TAP, Iberia to go year round, Aegean, Finnair (Helsinki is doing really well for OU, but OU can only do 3 days at most, no aircraft), Once these 7 carriers are settled in Zagreb, than LCCs will be invited to cover any holes.

30 extra weekly flights by these 7 carriers = 300 000 new passengers per year.

One of the problems that SPU has is that because of the ghastly experience in peak months a lot of passengers will swear never to come back. July and August for most of the day are a nightmare.
