Strong start for Zagreb

Zagreb Airport records passenger growth

Zagreb Airport welcomed 139.397 passengers in the first month of the year, registering growth of 5.5% compared to 2012. Croatia’s busiest airport recorded a strong start to the year despite the fact that the number of operated flights increased by only thirteen, from 1.392 in 2012 to 1.405 last month, or an increase of 0.9%. However, unlike January last year, the airport is now served by SkyWork Airlines, Qatar Airways and British Airways. Throughout January Zagreb Airport experienced weather problems with heavy snow and fog diverting flights to alternative airports several times over the course of the month. In 2012 Zagreb Airport handled a record 2.342.309 passengers, a figure it is looking to surpass this year.

During 2013 the construction of Zagreb Airport’s new terminal is set to begin. The consortium overseeing the construction and management of the new terminal recently announced plans to take out a 120 million euro loan from the European Investment Bank. The money is essential in order to secure the finances needed for construction of the multi million euro project to begin. The price tag of the project’s first phase will amount to 236 million euros, while the entire project is estimated to cost up to 324 million euros.

Meanwhile, passengers travelling from Doha to Zagreb via Budapest on Wednesday had to make an emergency landing in the Iranian capital Tehran after their aircraft faced a technical problem and lost an engine. The Airbus A321, with 158 passengers onboard, touched down at Imam Khomeini International Airport at around 10.00 local time on Wednesday, after which all passengers and crew members safely disembarked the jet. The aircraft was greeted by emergency vehicles, including fire trucks. Qatar Airways dispatched another plane a few hours later to pick up the stranded passengers.

An excellent start. But just watch Zadars pax numbers rise too this year. This will be a great year for all Croatian airports, even Rijeka.

    1. Agreed for ZAD,SPU,DBV. GREAT is the word.

Concerning ZAG, "great" is too much; for ZAG, it will be GOOD year.

OSI will remain nowhere, with no improvements, and PUY and RJK can expect only "little bit better" results.

      Yes, great numbers for ZAG!

February will be the big test - usually the quietest month of the year for the airport. If the numbers hold or go up, we're in for a bumper year...

  5. Nice news, makes me happy.
Hopefully OU's shedding of fleet and cutting down of some line will be compensated with an entrance of other airlines at LDZA.

    Prognosis 2013
    Optimistic : 2.5 mil
    Medium scenario: 2.45
    Pesimistic scenario: 2.35 - 2.4 mil

ZAG will not be hurt much by OU fleet cutting down.

      1. Most of canceled lines are in Adriatic cost

      2. IST is canceled but TK will open 2nd daily flight instead CTN (that was their plan from very begging but CTN blackmail them, and spent so much energy in forcing TK for reciprocity, and now, one year latter we allow them to do so).

      3. Some of lines will not be cancel but will be operated by other airline (they even negotiate with Adria about that).

    2. frequentflyer10:59

      ^ Interesting re IST.

This could have been a cash cow for OU - instead fighting with TK rather than working with them results in a less than satisfactory relationship.

Do we know if OU will codeshare on both daily flights??

Do excuse my ignorance, but what do you mean by saying 'lines'?

Correct English translation would be 'route': an established line of travel or access or (in aviation) a designated route followed by airplanes in flying from one airport to another.

New Terminal will be 236 million whole project is 324 million, phase 2 will be another 120€ million, phase 2 includes new Airport city complex and additional passenger boarding bridges with enlarging south apron, this should be completed by 2020 at the latest.

New terminal will eventually have 24 passenger boarding bridges or twice as many as predicted in phase one.
With phase 2 completed new terminal should be able to cope with 10-12 million passengers.

    My prediction for 2013

Zagreb - 2.55 million (if all goes according to plans)
    Split - 1.55 million
    Dubrovnik - 1.62 million
    Pula - 425 000
    Zadar - 520 000
    Rijeka - 172 000
    Osijek - 35000

  9. Happy about positive development at ZAG. I am also glad that everyone made it safe on QR's flight from Doha. Losing an engine during the flight is not fun at all. On the other hand, it is nice to see that QR keeps sending their A321. I guess this means that the loads are good, even during slow months such as January and February. I have also noticed that during summer months TAP is scheduled to send their A321 on certain days as well. ZAG is definitely getting more colorful with all those different airlines introducing their service. I am very happy that One World is increasing its presence in this region by launching LHR with British Airways and MAD with Iberia during summer months. Finally some competition to Lufthansa and it's poppets :)

Purger, thanks for this. A lot! :)
But, can you scan that timetable or maybe take a picture of it (including BEG an LJU part to) and upload it somewhere? I am interested in flight numbers and like all the flights there were also.
If its a problem, you cam send the pictures to me and I can upload them somewhere and share the links here.

I will do also time-table from other cities. If you are interested in something particularly just ask and I will put it here.

Purger we owe you a good bottle of Ribera del Duero not just a beer :-)

hehehehe... gooooood... red wines are my obsession. My first choice would always be Bordeaux, but Ribera del Duero is very similar. Did you know that in some wines of Ribera del Duero they put some grapes from Bordeaux origin?

    So, again when and where?
