PM: Air Serbia to New York in 2015 or early 2016

Prime Minister confident in Air Serbia's transatlantic success

The Serbian Prime Minister, Aleksandar Vučić, has announced that flights from Belgrade to the United States will be launched at the end of the year or in early 2016 at the latest. The comments were made days before the Prime Minister begins his official visit to the United States and only two weeks after a Bilateral Air Service Agreement was signed between the two countries. Mr. Vučić confirmed that New York City will be the first destination to be served in the States by national carrier Air Serbia. “The first destination will be New York and not Chicago as previously announced, but ultimately it is up to Air Serbia to decide”, the PM said.

Mr. Vučić conceded that it will take some time before transatlantic flights begin generating a profit. “I am confident that we will be a reliable partner [to the US] and there will be no problems on our behalf. We will meet the highest standards and flights to New York and Toronto will be full. During the first two years we won’t lose too much money, but afterwards these flights will be extremely profitable for our airline”, the Prime Minister noted. He added that the recently signed Bilateral Air Service Agreement, which regulates flight operations between the two countries, is “good and important news” for relations between Serbia and the United States.

Serbia - US Bilateral Air Service Agreement

Recently, the CEO of Air Serbia, Dane Kondić, said that no decision has been made on launching flights to the United States but confirmed the airline is continuing to evaluate the feasibility of transatlantic services. “No decision has been made. There has been a lot of talk about it. We haven’t actually said anything about it. The government is a shareholder in the business and they've asked us to look at the feasibility of serving North America. We are in throes of doing studies and analysis. Now, simultaneously, and not to prejudice the outcome of what analysis is going to show us, we've asked the government to make sure everything regulatory, that would enable us to fly, if we decide to fly, is in place”. Mr. Kondić noted that Air Serbia’s analysis of future transatlantic flights has been based around Airbus A330-200 aircraft. The CEO said the airline would follow a similar process in leasing the jets as it did with other members of its fleet.

Again politicians talk and airline is silent...now, PM says the first one will be New York and not Chicago as previously announced but it still up to the airline to decide. So basically, nobody knows anything for sure. I will rather wait for JU, not PM announcement with exact date and destination and say that something is actually happening on that long haul front.

How can a Prime Minister decide on which route will be served first? They are obsessed with New York, which doesn't make any sense to me. Chicago has a bigger diaspora and more people travel there from Serbia. Even Hogan said how that would be a logical choice to start flights to. It's as if members of the government are planning private trips to NYC and need that service first.

Late 2015 is awfully close and to me unrealistic. You would have to start selling tickets right about now. Diaspora travelers are notorious for booking months and months in advance.

It is political route, everyone know that. Because of that it is not important if it is profitable, even PM said so. As income of that route is not important it is also not priority to sell ticket in advance or to have good LF. This route will be financed from Serbian tax office with goal to be biggest promo for PM and to make him some political points. That is why PM announce route, why Kondić said he have doubts (to blackmail PM about money to invest in route) and why PM already announce that it will not be profitable for 2 years (read: it will lost huge amount of money for at least two years).

Fact is that routes take time to profitability. Some quicker than others (compare Beirut and Budapest as an example). There is a bigger cost involved with the Trans Atlantic flights. O&D pax helps fill the flights but that doesnt mean it will be profitable. How many of those diaspora is willing to pay for a J class ticket? Also fact is that we dont know what is planned for N America, we dont have a confirmed destination, neither a date nor schedule. All we have is small talk from 3 sides with the Serbian government on one, JU on the other and as well as comments from Hogan. Lets not judge a book by its cover and wait for the real announcement. Who knows, the flights may be great for Serbian exports which benefits us too. Lets not forget our neighbours will be paying their ticket with a Serbian company staffed by Serbian nationals etc etc rather than with their own domestic carrier or LH, OS, LX, TK. Serbs tend to forget that the airline they trash the past year employed hundreds of otherwise unemployed young Serbians, who now positively contribute to our economy by actually have money to spend in Serbia being for a cup of coffee or a pair of jeans, all of which has a tax funding our budget!

@JATBEGMEL: I think that you are missing the point that everybody is making. It's not for the PM to annouce what ASL are to do. It's for the GM of ASL. This is just another case whereas politicians in the Balkans are trying to get involved in other peoples business. Nobody should, if in their right mind, believe a shit that is coming from politicians here.

ASL has a management, a board of Directors and they are the once to take decisions on operational issues. The owners as in this case, Serbia, is to make sure that their investment has no problem from legislation or other issues to develop.

We, living in Serbia, have for more then a month on a daily basis been listening that he is going to the US, and who he's going to meet with.
We don't care, we do not need to hear him everyday for 30 minutes and what he has done.

He needs just to deliver results and let ASL do their job.

But he just can't shut up and just do his job...this is the main news in Serbia for the past 24 hours......

Priceless. What if it's not a neighbouring country, does your "logic" still apply? Are passengers from BEG getting cheap tickets to NY because they are funded by Austrian or German taxpayer?

"This is just another case whereas politicians in the Balkans are trying to get involved in other peoples business."

So bilaterals are not something politicians get involved with, it's just a business decision? Amazing!

This is how Belgrade, Zagreb and Ljubljana got their flights to the USA, another Balkan politician:

      ^^^

I agree that Vucic should keep quiet on the Trans Atlantic flights. I like the fact that it is his government that finally did something with Jat Airways, I like the fact that it is because of this deal that Serbia finally has a growing national carrier, and agree completely that JU should be left to the professional management team to work. My view is that if Vucic wants to talk more on Serbian aviation, he will remove Sasa Vlaisavljevic from BEG management and finally get a team to bring in a definate plan for the airport. JU is growing, BEG still doesnt have a definate plan for the future, and until that solution comes, it will eventually harm JU and its plans for futher growth.

My comment is mainly at my disagreement that these flights will be funding our neighbour countries cheap tickets to the US and benefit them more. My view is that Serbia has more to gain, even if hypothetically most pax are transit.

Kondić also said that the A330-200 would come from "the family". Etihad will have many new deliveries of 787s this year so they are going to have some A330-200s to spare. They have already leased a couple of those to Aliitalia. They will help Air Serbia survive eventual price war with Lufthansa and others by leasing that aircraft way under current market price. These are called "transfer prices" and are widely used in trade between parent comany and its international equity partners. Oposite is also true. Air Serbia probably flies to Muscat on behalf of Etihad for a much lower price than current market price making profit artificially smaller.

    1. Anonymous12:16

He didn't say that at all. What he said was that they would first look within the family to see what aircraft were available, but would also look outside the family via leasing companies ...

      Delete
    2. Anonymous12:50

Yes, but if you lease an A330 on the open market you have to pay the full (high) price. Etihad will help them at the beginning by leasing an A330 way under the normal price, thus reducing costs to Air Serbia, giving them more room to respond to the competition wihtout sustaining large losses. This is the whole point of those "synegries" Kondić was talking about.
      Pavle

      Delete
    3. Anonymous14:50

You are correct - anything that could come from Etihad will more than likely be cheaper than going to the market to lease an aircraft. I was simply trying to correct what Anon @ 10.52 am said - which was that any aircraft would come from within the Etihad family as a fait accompli - which it isn't. ASL needs to know that if it does go for a widebody, that it gets it on the best commercial terms and conditions - whether that be from within Etihad or not

      Delete
    4. Anonymous15:42

Same could be said for maintenace: It is not economical for Air Serbia to train staff and stock up on parts just for one or two A330s. MRO will be done in AUH. Pilots are probably going to come from Etihad as well. So, the A330 will probeably rotate AUH-BEG-JFK. Air Serbia is only going to have its livery and some FAs on the A330 which is still AWESOME! I think everything will turn out simular to ČSA PRG-ICN flights.

Flying to and from the US is not as easy as the PM might think, there has to be a number of approvals in place covering everything from FAA, TSA to Health and Animals. The airfield has to be approved even though it js a CAT3 airport "prior AFS-400" approval. All this applies regardless of it is ASL or an US carrier. BEG does NOT have any approval at the moment.

Also visa restruictions, Serbians can't go to USA just like PM likes to think. And visa procedure for Serbians is almost identical as is for Russians and other non-EU nationals, very complicated and lengthy.

      Delete
    2. Anonymous19:58

No one said BEG needs the approval at the moment. They are all talking about end of year. Whatever the gap is between current state and future state required for all approvals should be closed in the coming months. After all, US ambassador also said the flights will likely start by then, and we have to assume he is well informed and aware of any outstanding gaps. Are you saying that gaps cannot be closed by then? If so, please explain.

As for visas, people tend to forget most passengers will be diaspora and they already have US or Canadian passports or work/permanent visas. People travelling from Serbia and the region across the Atlantic will in most cases visit families that will help them obtain visitor visas. Visa issues are not stopping LH/OS/TK and others from carrying hundreds of thousands passengers from the Ex Yu to the USA and Canada, so the same will be true for Air Serbia. No need to panic, it's all going to be okay - Air Serbia will start flying there by next spring.

You say that last part with such vigour and confidence my boy. Is it just intution or wishful thinking?

      Delete
    4. Anonymous20:48

I will start with the last part first: To be honest with you the visa issue is not something I see as a problem. Most of the pax on this flights will be as on the other, transit. Going to/from the US and the Balkans.

Now the main issue: BEG has to first of all comply with all the regulations of FAA, TSA, Health & Animal etc. Trust me, the Ambassador however nice he is has NO idea about all the rules and regulations, he is just a civil survant doing his task as an ambassador. He has no in-depth knowledge whatsoever of the aviation industry. When it comes to the transit passengers, BEG should getting some vision on how the want to SERVE all the transit passengers coming thru on the airport, i.e restaurants, shops, toilets etc. Moving from arrival to departure. What to do on the airport while waiting for their connection to Dubrovnik, Zadar, Skopje, Pristina, Tirana etc.

While they are considering the internal passengers flow inside the terminal they need to start think about the operational movement of aircraft, embarking and disembarking, turnaround times for the airlines, de-icing ques and about another million things that takes place on an airport. Gaps can of course be closed, but you need to INVEST, you need to have a plan, since the previous masterplan was published a few things has happened within the aviation industry....perhaps an update could be useful? Perhaps hiring a masterplan director, with EXPERIENCE.

All this takes time, sometimes years, and since they have not invested in the past 2 years....they are way behind. They need time, lots of time and even more money.

I could go on and on forever, but as they are not doing anything - the uphill will just get bigger and bigger and at the end of the day they are loosing because the traffic will be cramped, and it starts becoming an safety issue.....less revenue, less profit, less investments...

Coming back to you question. No they do not need the approval tomorrow. But to get an approval they need time, time to figure out what they need in order to get the approval, time to plan, time to execute and then time for the inspection......and then perhaps late next year they might get the approval.

Running an airport is a never ending story of investments and planning for the future, constantly revising plans IF you want to be on top.

I personally think that BEG has a golden oppertiunity to get something intelligent done, now since they have been blessed by the Arab investment in ASL.

Just don't screw up things, again.

    5. Anonymous22:37

Anon @ 7.58pm .... Ok, so you say that most of this traffic will come not from Serbia, but from USA ? So how big you think is this market ? The Serbian diaspora in US is not so big at all. Look at official statistics shown on wikipedia link below which quotes US Census Bureau...

      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serbian_diaspora

I am bit lost, you're adding all these destinations in Exd-YU as if some sort of certainty.

Example, Croatia and Slovenia are very well connected with major hubs, London, Paris, Frankfurt,.Amsterdam, Munich and Vienna, why would anyone from these two Diasporas even want to fly to Belgrade when they have better connections via London, Paris, Amsterdam and so on.

in fact this is totally irrelevant issue to be honest, you simply can't fly on Diaspora alone, u need business and tourists coming, and this simply can't happen with entire Serbia attracting less visitors than Zagreb.

I really don't see where you're getting your optimism from. Vucic is wasting money on Air Serbia when you have unemployment of 26% and budget deficit of 14%, country on verge of bankruptcy and no end to economic troubles.

And now they are looking at a masterplan from 2003.... stupidity seems to run in the family.... :) TSA, FAA and the rest will not give any approval until the things are on place, working. I'm not concerned about ASL, it's BEG......!!!
They will screw up the expansion of ASL.

  23. Here we see two opposing forces. Hogan and Kondic are doing everything they can to keep all new developments on the down-low. Their strategy is to keep everything secret until the very last moment. This is why nobody officially knew about the sixth ATR (there were a few leaks), and also why Tirana and Zagreb were not announced until the very last minute. Also, Air Serbia's Code or Business Conduct (available on Air Serbia's website) covers a lot about leaking information and the ethical aspects.

The other opposing force is Vucic and his friends, who wish to make everything known and wanting everything to be in the news and talked about.

I don't think either side is to be trusted, Hogan and Kondić won't be giving any definite answers, and Vucic will say anything to be in the spotlight, much to the dismay of Hogan and Kondić who wish to keep everything a surprise.

    2. An American airline flying from USA to Serbia? Zero chance.

They don't operate on the same principles as European airlines, esspecially on long haul.

Their strategy is to limit capacity as much as possible so yields can be high, and this is why they send B757s and B767s wherever they can. They can't send a 757 to BEG because it is too far, and thus they must send a 767. A 767 would be too big for them, and thus they would have to decrease their yields. It is more profitable for them to route Serbia-USA traffic through their JV and codeshare partners in West Europe.

Delta has access through AF/KLM, and United has access through Lufthansa, Austrian, and Swiss. American doesn't even have access because British left BEG long ago, which speaks about how insignificant our market really is, unfortunately.

The USB3 are done playing games, and now they are in serious money making mode. As a passenger, I try to avoid them as much as possible, although I will be flying United's B767-400 on my way to Serbia this September.

    3. Anonymous22:19

This goes hand in hand with what I have written above and for months on this site. BEG is the BIG issue, they are not even close to be ready for any expansion. The issue is that Ethidad and the board has invested a PILE of money into ASL, they are now looking at the management and asking for the ROIC....I think that ASL is close to their capacity and if they do not get any help from BEG in investments in infrastructure that will increase the capacity....who will approve putting in two A330's on BEG-USA.....it's not just to have two aircrafts on the tarmac, it's a huge investment in spare parts, crews in both places.....runway issues etc. I think that our young friend from the mountains can keep on dreaming like he did on Wednesday in regards of the concession for a long time to come, he and Vucic with family.

Aleksandre, transatlantic aspirations for Air Serbia were visible from the start, no need to be surprised by it or to keep that long term goal secret. I know everyone wants to wow everyone like Steve Jobs and say "one more thing" before pulling out iphone out of your pocket, but A330 is too big to fit in the pocket! Elon Musk does not try to hide his aspiration to go to Mars. Long term goals should be public, operational not so much. It's okay for Air Serbia to insipire us with longhaul dreams, but WiFi intro date should be off limits.

Now I am not here to dispense any legal advice, but anyone working directly or as a contractor for any airline, airport, MRO, supplier etc should not be posting ANYTHING here, not a leak, not an opinion, not any comment AT ALL, not even as anonymous - without explicit authorization from employer to do so. I am saying that without even looking at any codes of conduct. Even if it's not listed specifically in "The Code", but it can become public because of you: don't - that's all you need to know.

The only reason I have been free to post my (frequently wrong) opinion is that I am none of the above. I love aviation and it's no secret I would love to see ASL and BEG grow, but you would't hear a thing from me if I worked for them. So I can speculate that ASL A330-200 will have General Electric CF6-80 engines, I explained that yesterday, and I could just as well be wrong!

    6. Yeah, but Vucic is trying to say the details, such as routes and time frame, which the management of Air Serbia wants to be kept inside the company. They surely have their own time frame and they know which routes will be the most profitable.

INN, try learning about "opportunity cost". No airline has infinite planes, and they must choose the routes that will earn the most money. BEG is at the bottom of the list for American carriers.

Dear oh dear Aleksandar, when finally deciding to give the USA big 3 a go you chose United!! I hope they offer a better product compared to what the offer of their USA - Australia flights. The 767-400 does sound cool though!

Personally I have flown Delta across the Pacific a few times and my experience in has always been pleasant. I usually fly economy comfort with Delta. Next trip would probably be with QF again since apparently they have improves a lot.

    9. Haha, I am fully aware that United is shit tier, but I live near one of their hubs, so I get to fly them much more often than I like!

I always say, United is the LCC of Star Alliance, somehow they are always way cheaper for me. Luckily I am flying Austrian's 772 on the way back.

I fly six sectors on this round trip (3 each way) and I get to sample 6 different planes:
      United 738
      United 764
      Lufty A319

      Austrian Fokker 100
      Austrian 772
      United 752

I have also flown Delta a few times, although only domestic and to Canada. They are fine, but I don't appreciate 2 hours flights to Canada in an ERJ145!

How is Economy Comfort? I have never done anything but straight economy, so is it worth it?

    10. For a 14 hour Sydney to LA sector it is definitely worth it!

On Delta, you get an extra 4 inches of leg room, priority catering service and the flight attendants are always prompt. They also occasionally walk around with a basket of fresh fruit which I thought was a very nice and inexpensive touch.

I agree with you and in the world of business there are 2 main reasons why you keep shut. 1) Not to disclose to your competition what your plans are, not because you have a competition per say at a specific location, but you competition might figure out what you are sacrifying in another place, even the arabs will not invest like there is no tomorrow. 2) Plans might CHANGE, so if you have not promised anything until there is no return on plans, shut up so nobody can blame you if it doesn't happen for some reason.

As other users have said, the big big thing hindering these flights and any further ASL expansion in general is the mess that is BEG airport. I think it needs to be sold IMMEDIATELY because the government clearly has not got the skills to run the airport successfully. They need to proceed with extra gates/terminal floor as soon as possible. Hopefully it is sold to VINCI or some other international company with real business expertise soon.

No it is not. One daily flight is around 100.000 which is not problem for BEG, lets say they will have three daily flights to USA and Canada that will be 300000 more which is nothing. You can sold your house but not airport.

      Delete
    2. Anonymous14:22

Well it's not just that flight that would provide additional passengers because in order to profitably launch TATL flights they would have to expand the network a bit more to feed those flights which would add more passengers to the mix thereby maxing out BEG's terminal capacity.
