Star Alliance headlines Ljubljana growth

Star Alliance member airlines performing well at Ljubljana Airport

Turkish Airlines has maintained its position as the busiest foreign carrier operating flights to and from Ljubljana Jože Pučnik Airport. According to the “Sierra 5” portal, the Star Alliance member carried over 40.000 passengers on its flights from Istanbul’s Ataturk Airport to Ljubljana during the first half of the year, an increase of 15% compared to the same period in 2014. The average cabin load factor stood at just over 70%. The Turkish national carrier inaugurated flights to Ljubljana in January 2006, initially running three weekly services on the route with a Boeing 737-800 aircraft. Over the last five years it has carried over 300.000 passengers between the two cities. This summer, the airline boosted its operations to the Slovenian capital from seven to ten weekly flights. As EX-YU Aviation News learns, the Turkish carrier is considering boosting its services to twelve weekly flights next summer.

Swiss International Air Lines, which launched daily flights from Zurich to Ljubljana this summer season will maintain services to the Slovenian capital throughout the winter as well, although flights will be reduced to four per week. The airline is satisfied with its performance on the route so far. Swiss spokeswoman, Karin Muller, told EX-YU Aviation News, “The former Yugoslav market is very interesting for Swiss, as there is a big community from the Balkan area living in Switzerland. Therefore, there is a high demand for flights to these countries”. Next year, another Star Alliance member will launch services to Ljubljana. LOT Polish Airlines will inaugurate six weekly flights from Warsaw on March 1. Some 12.000 passengers are expected to use the service in its first year.

Following a slow start to 2015, Jože Pučnik Airport has seen its numbers bounce over the past three months, with double digit passenger growth recorded. During the first half of the year, Slovenia’s busiest airport handled 626.525 travellers, an increase of 9.7% compared to the same period in 2014. During the six-month period, the number of flight operations totalled 15.511, up 0.4%. Adria remains the airport’s busiest airline. “The goal is to make Ljubljana the leading airport in this part of Europe - in terms of attractiveness, hospitality, and the quality of service for our customers”, the airport’s Managing Director, Zmago Skobir, said. Anke Giesen, the Chief Operating Officer of the Frankfurt-based global airport management company Fraport, which runs Ljubljana Airport, noted, “We are convinced of the great potential of Ljubljana. Our unique partnership with Ljubljana Airport is a win-win situation for travellers, tourism and for the Slovenian economy overall”.

If the average lf is just above 50% why did they add so many flights this year?

    5. Anonymous16:20

Well, if you take into account that a carrier like TK has a barely 10% higher %LF than it's an indication it's not that bad after all, or not that low-yielding unlike some destinations such as Zagreb.

Would be interesting to know - in numbers, ASL is the second or third busiest carrier at LJU, correct? Overall, ZAG is doing better for Airthan LJU or vice-versa?

definetly LJU but there are a lot of spare capacity in both cases

    9. Anonymous18:05

it depends on the operating aircraft.
let Air Serbia fly only ATR 72 and the LF is higher...

But due to operating reasons at JU... it's not the "fault" of LJU or ZAG.
When you sell the seats for an ATR... and then the day before operating you change the aircraft and let e.g. a Boeing 733 fly... you have done just nonsense with selling some 50 seats... or not?

    10. I have noticed that Vienna morning flight is usually operated by ATR, while evening one with B737. Is VIE also being operated with B737 in evening due to operational reasons or is there really more pax? Also surprised that PRG is not being operated with B737 sometimes since from what I heard it has better loads than LJU or ZAG plus its a longer route

Have already been flying to LJU during the Slovenian EU presidency (with mid-day flights). Even then it was not very successful. It is a demand manly for early morning departure from LJU and late afternoon flights back from BRU.

Has SAS ever flown to LJU? BTW I think the more likely arrival would be someone like Aegean rather than Brussels Airlines.

I think that SAS was never present at LJU

I think SAS flies only to Croatia, KLM, British Airways and Brussels Air. SAS once flew to few other cities in the region but they no longer do. SAS has plans to return to Zagreb on year round service, but no ideas for any other city in the region.

Hi Nemjee, checked market share ZRHDXB and ZRHMCT but system showed us only what has been sold ex ZRH on the local market. Both dest LX has only around 14-15% market share.
So LX moves most of its pax as transits
MCT-DXB they hve full traffic rights and sell on the UAE and Oman markets
Still will see how much longer this two destinations will last. LH terminated AUH in March and in Oct OS will skip DXB
Sorry came so late but I dont hve own access to this DDS system

    7. Hey, thanks for the info. I am shocked that it's that low but then again Persian Gulf airlines do dump capacity and fares so...

Btw, do these numbers represent only the local, p2p passengers or do they also include those who originated in Zurich but who might have continued beyond DXB (EK on EK for example)?

I like LX, I find them very pleasant to fly on. They seem to be the most aggressive Star Alliance carrier in Belgrade at the moment. I guess it's easy for them given the huge local market so they can afford to offer cheaper connecting fares. With their new fare system, they will certainly become even more competitive. Even though Austrian has a bigger market potential, somehow I think they are a lost cause.

His absence is one reason. Other reason is that no one used pictures from Split for negative comments. Gentleman, restrain yourself from negative comments when you see pictures of long queues, lost baggage or taxi mafia at all other airports in the region, and we can always have nice and civilized discussion.

Long queues are fact in ZAG and SPU (not in other Croatian airports) on top summer months and those airports should be criticized for that. Lost baggage is very rear thing in Croatian airports. Taxi mafia does not exist in Croatia especially not that someone will pull your sleeve in terminal. Combination of those 3 things and lot of more happens only in Belgrade. And Belgrade should be criticized for that!!!

      Last anon,

What's the point of immediately trashing Belgrade? Plus, lost baggage only occurs for transfer passengers, not local ones. We can't compare the two as ZAG doesn't really have transfer ones.

    6. Anonymous16:41

He's not trashing BEG, someone mentioned taxi mafia and it is a fact that they are big at BEG (also TGD, mind you). This is something that is easily handeled if there is a will and should be criticized as often as possible.

    7. Anonymous17:06

The issue of taxi mafia at BEG was resolved since they placed the taxi booth at the luggage pick up area.
