Adria to decide on future Maribor flights soon

Adria mulls Maribor extension

Adria Airways will soon make a decision on whether to continue operating services from Maribor Edvard Rusjan Airport during the upcoming winter season. The Slovenian carrier resumed scheduled operations from Maribor in June, following a fifteen year hiatus, maintaining three weekly seasonal flights to London Southend Airport. “As planned, the service for now remains in operation until the end of September. A decision on a possible extension will be made in the coming days”, Adria said in a statement. Flights from Maribor operate with a mix of Airbus A319 and Bombardier CRJ900 jets, although the latter is more commonly used. The airline is flexible with its equipment and deploys aircraft based on demand. According to early booking figures, the average cabin load factor on each flight stood at around 60%. Adria is said to be satisfied with the figure.

The Municipality of Maribor says the continuation of the Maribor – Lodnon service will depend on whether the operator of Maribor Airport and Adria reach an agreement over future flights. “Of course the Municipality of Maribor wants to see these flights continue into the future. Its extension would have a positive impact on the development of tourism and the economy”, local authorities say. However, they add that the route needs the support from local communities, with the Maribor Municipality planning to set up a shared fund which would be used to develop tourism, with a particular emphasis on Maribor Airport. The service from Maribor to London has generated the greatest interest among Slovenians, however, the flights have also been selling well in Croatia, Austria and the United Kingdom.

The CEO of Adria Airways, Mark Anžur, says there is still a real possibility for Maribor to become the airline’s low cost hub, with a single aircraft to be based in the city. This would lead to the launch of new routes. “Flights to Germany are being considered and we see great potential there due to Graz’s close proximity. Even Spanish holiday destinations would be of interest. In the long-term, Maribor would be very appealing to eastern markets because of its short distance from many tourist destinations that would be of interest to Russians”, Mr Anžur said. Unconfirmed reports suggest that Berlin and Barcelona are being considered for next year. Maribor Airport handled some 18.000 passengers last year, the majority of which were flown on charter flights. It estimates handling 35.000 passengers in 2015.

Honestly, I don't think the flights are performing as well as they hoped and they are just waiting to see if they will get cash to fly the route during winter. But anyway it would be great news for Maribor.

  2. My friend flown 3 weeks ago and said on the flight from MBX were 3 seats free and to MBX the plane (CRJ900) was full. Mr. Gros is no more director of airport, now it is Mr. Brolih. You share old news. I think that there will be no flights from end of September from MBX, also do not believe Adria will open hub or open new routes in next summer.

I also can't believe that LF is only 60% because if you want to buy a ticket on this route some 3 days before a flight, you dont even have the possibility because flights seem to ne fully booked. Admin what is your source of LF information?

It says early booking numbers... Things might have improved sibce.

    4. Anonymous11:35

The thing is, Adria planned on using Airbus on the route. However, the passenger numbers weren't as high as expected. Hence, they mostly use CRJ - the only exception being when the runway at Southend is wet (wet landing distance required exceeds LDA). With the fare price set (too?) low and with two ferry flights (LJU-MBX, MBX-LJU) there is no reason to expect any profit from the route.

    5. Anonymous20:23

There is no profit on the line, but fares were subvenced, because Maribor municipality received some money from cohesive EU funds for a project.

The revenue from those flights are probably very low. Tickets are cheap and the flight is long. That's why the airline has liquidity problems. Plus wetleasing A340s for a single day like they did a week ago shows they have no idea what they are doing.

Adria looses too much money thru leasing this extra aircraft thru Summer months. Good point that Danish A320. Tour Operator pays low yields for their Charter pax, per EU law u hve to reimburse them 250 eur for delays per pax and still need ad hoc charter some ac to fly them to the destination. Now start yr calculations. JP shld focus on fleet flights schedule to cover all year. Let the main portion of charters to Slovenia do others. U can t hve it all

I think this would be a good opportunity for an airline like Air Serbia to start flying to Maribor. Its obviously an undeserved market and you could attract loads of passengers to the east.

Air Serbia really needs to expand regional network and for that matter they need new regional planes. Some destinations in Croatia really need to go all year round and they need more frequencies wirh smaller planes like ATR or Q400.

    7. It makes no sense for JU to fly to Maribor because the flights will have to be timed the same way as LJU, meaning that they will offer connections towards the Balkans and the Middle East.
I highly doubt anyone would fly via Belgrade to western Europe.

    9. If I were Maribor I would do my best to attract Ellinair. They are a new airline that's rapidly expanding. What would make them successful is the fact that they are backed by Mouzenidis group which could also sell package holidays. I actually think they could do better than Aegean there.

I to godinama.. Kakve poreze i doprinose plaća aerodrom? Nikakve.
