Gulf airlines ramp up Belgrade operations

Carriers from the Gulf region have announced plans to notably increase their operations to Belgrade as a result of growing demand, which will coincide with the upcoming suspension of Air Serbia's Abu Dhabi service. Flydubai plans to increase capacity by 75% on its Belgrade flights, while Qatar Airways is upgrading its equipment and considering introducing an extra three weekly services to the Serbian capital. In a statement, Flydubai said it is adding an additional three weekly flights. for a total of seven, starting this winter season, on October 29. "The additional flights will also allow passengers from Serbia better connectivity to a range of destinations onwards from Dubai. Apart from improving connections to destinations popular with Serbian travellers, such as the Maldives, Colombo and Kathmandu, passengers will also have on offer a new and attractive Flydubai destination - Kilimanjaro".

Last week Emirates said it was looking to work more closely with Flydubai and replicate the cooperation it has with the hybrid carrier on its Belgrade service. Emirates President, Tim Clark, said at the Paris Air Show, "We move around 1.200 passengers a day across the two airlines. For example, they fly to places like Belgrade and there’s quite a lot of people from Australia, of Serbian ancestry going into Serbia. Those passengers fly into Dubai from Australia on Emirates, then transfer on to Flydubai". He added, "Sheikh Mohammed [Chairman of both Emirates and Flydubai] wants this [cooperation] to happen, and when you get that ‘push’ from the shareholder, you get things done”.

Meanwhile, Qatar Airways will add a further three weekly flights, for a total of seven, to the Serbian capital starting October 1, as previously announced. It will deploy its Airbus A320P jet on the route, which features 132 seats, with an improved premium product boasting twelve seats in business class with 180 degree lie-flat capability. However, starting July 1. the airline will up capacity on its existing four weekly service from the A320 to its 182-seat Airbus A321 aircraft, with the change already visible in booking systems. Furthermore, according to the "Aviatica" portal, the Qatari carrier is considering adding an additional three weekly services to Belgrade, on top of the already planned increase, which would result in a total of ten weekly flights.

I don't think they can add any more frequencies with the revised bilateral between Serbia and Turkey but I'm not a 100% sure.

      Delete
    2. Anonymous09:49

The bilateral is based on reciprocity. Since JU no longer has scheduled flights to Turkey, Turkish carriers are free to add as many flights as they wish to.

If JU decides to return to Turkey then their authorities must grant them the number of flights that their airlines have to Serbia.

      Delete
    3. Anonymous14:00

Only room for growth is on Atlasglobal as they are ustlising JU's capacity. So they can go to double daily and that's it

TK can grow no more than what it already has

      Delete
    4. Anonymous14:09

Of course it can if it wants to

      Delete
    5. Anonymous23:53

Errr, no they can't because JU will decide it, not TK.

TK had to drop 3 weekly frequencies )down from 17 to 14) as part of the deal brokered with JU a few years ago and their frequencies are currently capped at 14 per week.

So that's it, despite your wishes/hopes for TK to grow

      Delete
    6. Anonymous00:33

TK can grow if they want. If they can do it in Belgrade they will open INI flight, and will attract not just passengers from Niš, but also other parts of Serbia.

And there will be more and more of that kind of deals. More companies to fly to INI instead of expensive and too JU protected BEG.

      Delete
    7. Anonymous08:31

Absolute and utter nonsense. JU doesn't decide anything, just like they can't decide if W6 bases another aircraft or not.

Air traffic between Serbia and Turkey is regulated by an air service agreement.
TK was forced to reduce flights back then because JU just entered the Turkish market. Given how incompetent JU is they left the maket leaving the Turks to add flights as they please. So no, JU has no say.

If JU wants to return, the Turks must grant them 28 weekly frequencies as that's what their airlines have in Serbia.

I think it's great to have competition, it breeds success. Protectionism is never for the benefit of the consumer.

Emirates will maintain pax of around 16.2-17 000 pax in June, an average of 270 pax per arrival and departure.

What sales the flight is First and Business premium seats. These sell well on Zagreb flights, 50% booing on average, and this if first month of operations.

First 10-12 days return flights were half empty but things improved as many return ticket holders started to fly back.

July will definitely be better, with projection of 17 000 pax.

Emirates projected 85000 pax on the route till the end of the year or approximately 12000 pax per month.

Indications are Emirates will have 100-107 000 pax on Dubai-Zagreb-Dubai route. This is 20% above expectations.

In slower months November 1st -April 1st. Emirates most likely will deploy B777 2000LR on the route offering 266 seats or nearly 16000 seats per month. @75%, 12000 pax is quite likely during slow months, condescending 16-17000 is current pax.

First class and Business class pay for the entire trip, lets not forget that.

Also Zagreb airport had decent 2016, Made after tax profit of €5.2 million, and had an turnover of €158.4 million. Financially the largest airport in the region, if not by traffic, by revenue certainly.

2017, projections are €170-175 million revenue and €7.6 million after tax profits.

Condescending the airport just made an investment of €250 million, this is indeed quite impressive result.

Croatia also registered 22% more tourist arrivals in first 5 months of the year, registering 4.5 million arrivals and 16.5 million nights. @this rate 18.5 million tourists will visit Croatia in 2017 and 20 million in 2018. Croatia earned €9.4 billion in revenue from tourism in 2016 or 18.1% of GDP. Projections for 2017 are revenue of €10.2 billion.

My analysis for 2017 is based on trends, which can change. 85000 pax for Emirates on Dubai - Zagreb - Dubai route was projection made by Emirates.

Actual numbers are 20% up on projections. Emirates was expecting 15000 on the route per months next year. This year they projected route to do 12000 per month.

Croatian tourist arrivals up by 22% was reported in the news, with 24% increase in overnights. Zagreb leads the way in arrivals and overnights, with almost million overnights and 640 000 arrivals in first 5 months. Projection for the rest of the year is based on that trend.

It wasn't that bad, 85% loads to Zagreb and 50% loads back, now it is around 85% to Zagreb and 70% to Dubai. Average 300 to Zagreb, 250 to Dubai.

And it is first month. Sure some days are worse some are better, this is on average.

LF is more than good. Emirates average LF is 79%. They expect 60% in first 6 months to ZAG. And that is good for new route. But they have 82% even in first month. Much more they expect. Even more than their average LF.

      So, those results are amassing.

      Delete
    38. Anonymous08:28

They are amassing, that's for sure. I think the LF will be 99%

With Dinar getting stronger I expect even more people to travel abroad. In a month it gained 1% when compared to the Euro, even more with the Dollar.

Great news for Belgrade. Now it's up to Etihad to respond. I fear if they don't there will have some real issues on this route in the future.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Anonymous11:10

I highly doubt they will have issues. Those flights are regularly overbooked. As long as Air Serbia keeps feeding those flights from various cities like they do now, they will keep performing well.

Flydubai daily already added in the system and Qatar Airways daily already in the system, as well as Qatar A321 already in the system. It says in the article they will probably go to 10 weekly. So I don't see what's "wishful" when it's factual.

So in total an additional 9 weekly flights. Not bad.

I think the main problem is that most, if not all, sales on JU 800 were on the EY code-share. ASL's sales team to Asia and Australia was probably rather pathetic.

Tunisair is bringing back its Monastir-Belgrade flights starting from tomorrow. They initially asked for two weekly flights but they changed it to one weekly after the crooks in the Serbian directorate turned them down.

Flights operate with B736 and A319. Tomorrow's flight is fully booked.

So TU will have three weekly flights to Belgrade.

Still would be nice to see a widebody from one of these GCC airlines. The only airline I see it being possible at the moment is Etihad if it starts sending the A330.

FlyDubai is doing really well in Belgrade. With Etihad and Qatar I thought they would be the first to be run out but their combination with Emirates plus a lot of P2P passengers have made them popular.

they certainly seemed like the weakest link but not only did they keep their O&D but they also attracted a lot of transfers which is shocking a bit.

Also let's not forget that BEG was the first destination where they introduced free meals.

So this winter we are going to have the following to Asia:

    IST 21
    AUH 7
    DXB 7
    DOH 7 (possibly 10)
    BEY 5
    TLV 5
    SAW 4
    PEK 2

    Total: 58 weekly flight

    That's 8 daily flights to Asia! :O
