Belgrade Airport handles three-millionth passenger

NEWS FLASH

Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport welcomed its three-millionth passenger of the year this morning, eight days ahead of 2017. Over the past two weeks, the airport broke two records by handling the most passengers in a single day - on July 16 and 20 when 23.320 and 23.335 travellers passed through its doors respectively. The growth is being fuelled, among other things, by a significant surge in passenger numbers on charter flights, which have so far increased 25% compared to 2017.

Where does this huge increase in charter traffic come from? What changed?

People have more money to travel. Some might argue this, but it is true, at least in my surrounding.

It is not med i mleko, but people OBVIOUSLY earn more and can afford to fly to Turkey. In the past many people went to Kusadasi and Antalya by bus ... I really do not know who sane would now go by bus to Turkey ...

Ne nego imaju vise novca da putuju avionom. Vecina Srba inace letuje i zimuje u inostranstvu preko 2 miliona samo tamo idu krdzavim autobusima i kolima, a sada cesce avionima.

Additionally, more people are going to Turkey this year instead of Greece, and they are more likely to go by plane.

Not only that but there is much more demand for Tunis, Egypt and Italy.

Da ide se vise i za Italiju. Ko normalan putuje u skromnu Hrvatsku i Crnu Goru kada moze uzivati u nekom mestu na 7000 km dugackoj italijanskoj obali lepo avionom. Samo je isto velika prljavstina na jugu Italije.

Za hrvatsku obalu se svašta može reći, ali da je velika prljavština, to ne. Nigde nisam video čistije more nego na hrvatskom Jadranu.

@ Anon: 12:38 "Not only that but there is much more demand for Tunis, Egypt and Italy"

Haha, YES, but what exactly has led to this big increase in demand? It can only be people have more to spend this year than last, meaning the real income has grown in Serbia, or the prices have gone significantly down or whatever. Would be interesting to see WHY the demand has surged, and if it will be repeated next year, since it was not there last year.

It is more about Turkey being extremely cheap than better living standards. Basically, it is cheaper to fly to Antalya than drive to Montenegro, Greece or Croatia

Turkey is not that cheap though. It's not expensive but it's not cheap either. Plus, what about all the interest and demand for Italy? Same as Turkey? ;)

Charters also carry foreign tourists to Serbia, so that probably had an influence on the pax numbers.
As far as Serbian tourists go, they seem to be returning to the likes of Egypt and Tunisia as the political climate slowly stabilizes. Also, I notice there's more people travelling to Greece by air lately, rather than by car and bus.

using simple math three milion menas 536274 travellers in July up to date. With 20-22000 average in following 6 days it will not be more then 650000 in July which means very humble growth of app 5%. That is dissapointing.

Why is 5% disappointing? If it was -5% then yes I would agree it’s disappointing. But there’s nothing wrong with this growth. You must be one of those that is expecting 50% growth at an airport that would be struggling to accomodate that figure and then complaining about mismanagement etc.

With new markets (Iran, Israel) and pretty more bigger planes and more charters (25%) I expected grow nearly 10%.

    3. Anonymous17:56

Zori, you are right but bigger planes are less frequent in BEG. If BEG were to have constant LCC then growth would've definitelty been 15% just like it is the case with BUD for instance.
So, time for W6 to base a new plane ASAP and increase existing frequencies much needed > LTN, MLA and maybe reconsider Vaxjo after SKP and TZL.

They already fly to MLA and so does JU. What W6 really needs is expansion to ZAG.
