Thai AirAsia X plans Zagreb charters

NEWS FLASH

Thai AirAsia X has scheduled a number of charter flights between Bangkok and Zagreb this summer season, although their fate remains uncertain as a result of the coronavirus Covid-19 outbreak. The long haul low cost airline plans to operate a handful of services between the Thai and Croatian capitals in May and October. Scheduled dates include May 1, May 6, May 11, October 13 and October 19. However, the planned operations in May are almost certain not to go ahead, as Thai AirAsia X began a three-month suspension of all international operations on March 16. The flights are to be operated by the carrier’s Airbus A330 aircraft. Thai AirAsia X first expressed interest in serving Croatia back in 2017. Earlier this month, Zagreb Airport said it was in contact with two carriers from North Africa and South East Asia over the introduction of summer charters.

If you walk Bangkok you can see a lot of adds for Croatia. Flights are mostly offered through OS. Now this would be a direct charter flight for Thais.

    2. Lol where in Bkk anyone even heard about Croatia, let alone that there are some ads about Croatia?
There were total 3 Thai citizens that were aware of existence of Croatia

3 or 4 charter flights? I sincerely doubt it, while BKK is in demand for both EK and surely QR, it is not their only destination and it is not that ALL pax would use these (very limited in seats to begin with) charters. Plus, extra flights usually stimulate demand. More issues for any airline would be if say TG or SQ would come (which is not expected by any means), as that would mean impact on most of O&Ds (Australia, Indonesia, Thailand other than Bangkok) and loss on respective point to point as well. That being said, I don't see a chance for this now in 2020, but hope I am too pessimistic.

    But why Zagreb ?
The most surprising thing about Thailand are the gazillion of Russian tourists that come to Bangkok and Phuket with big planes from dozens of Russian cities that nobody ever heard of .
This market is totally ignored by the Thai Airlines .
I guess Thai Asia X could even without any problem fly triple daily to Moscow ...lol .

    1. They have somewhat of a network which reaches into Australia and NZ with a backpacker/low budget focus.

Zagreb would be on their radar because there is some level of demand for both way traffic between Zagreb & Bangkok. Increasingly, middle class Thais are travelling abroad and Thailand is probably the favourite destination for Croats that travel outside of Europe for holidays. Also Thai Air Asia X could tap into transit passengers from South Korea, S.E. Asia & Australia. I think when the Covid19 situation normalises in a year or so charter flights and then seasonal routes for Zagreb-Bangkok could be feasible.
