Air Serbia to take delivery of second wide-body jet

Air Serbia is set to take delivery of its second Airbus A330-200 aircraft in the coming weeks after it was painted in Arizona in the carrier’s livery. The eleven-year-old jet, now registered YU-ARC, will be deployed on flights to New York, as well as Tianjin, with the latter set to launch in December. The aircraft will temporarily replace the airline’s other A330-200 which is due to go into regular maintenance, after which both will be utilised. Air Serbia has previously said the incoming wide-body jet will have a short entry into service, which would prevent the carrier from installing its own cabins, meaning it will temporarily feature those from its previous operator.

The second A330-200 features a special livery and is named after the Serbian physicist and physical chemist Mihajlo Pupin, with the jet bearing his image on the tail. Based in the United States for much of his life, Mihajlo Pupin was also the Honorary Consul of Serbia in the United States from 1912 to 1920 and played a role in determining the borders of the newly formed Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes. Notably, Mihajlo Pupin was one of the twelve people to have attended the first meeting of the National Committee for Aeronautics (NACA), which would later transform into NASA. In addition to being involved in its establishment, Pupin was also the first Chairman of the subcommittee on Aviation Communications in the United States.

Commenting on its long haul fleet, Air Serbia’s CEO, Jiri Marek, said, “The new addition will be vital to our further expansion, launching new routes and increasing the frequency of flights in our existing network of destinations. In addition to serving future flights to China, this plane will also be deployed on services to important European destinations that are in high demand. Our New York JFK operation is profitable and, combined with the new opportunities in China and expansion in the US, it was a simple decision to go for the second aircraft”. He added, “Today it is not easy to launch services to China, due to ongoing Covid restrictions, it is only possible to start one frequency per week. In order for the incoming aircraft to be utilised, we will also launch flights to Chicago. There is a strong Balkan community there. A third long haul aircraft is planned if the Chinese market completely opens up. However, that will take some time”.

I for example totally love it, especially with portraits of famous Serbs (and I'm not one) on the tail.
Much better than e.g. OS giving names of their airplanes after cities-or that horrible "new" LH livery with the stupid crane symbol.

Put what on smaller planes? These famous Serbs? Maybe because people like Pupin and Tesla deserve to be featured on the biggest plane in JU's fleet. Personally I think this is a nice touch.

I remember when JU's livery was presented for the first time. There was widespread hysteria because of the two headed eagle and the way it was stylized. Naturally, people were as hysterical when Air Serbia was presented as the name. I guess each time JU does something big (usually related to Serbian culture and identity) people tend to complain.

The eagle I don't like very much, not because of anti-serb sentiment, but because it is just too complicated to watch somehow-took me a while to get it that it was an eagle and then so many lines and colors.... whereas now you can clearly see it's people and that's not something you see on a livery very often- just as fun as e.g. when ANA had Star wars liveries or Hello Kitty Livery on Eva Air, or the Amur tiger on the nose of Rossiya

      Delete
    6. Anonymous10:08

Eagle difficult to watch? Lol! The eagle or lion are symbols of many European countries and featuring them was always cool and representative.
I think it's amazing to feature someone important of your country but do it for instance like Aeroflot. They preserved their classical logo, added pretty cool colours and the names of their heroes or physicians etc wrote nicely on the front side of the plane. I personally really like their logo. That orange and silver just match very well.

Air Canada published list of new long haul destinations for next year and Belgrade wasn't on the list. Vučić mentioned Toronto just a couple of days later. It seemed like they are in a rush to launch Toronto in May or June, just after Chicago.

      Delete
    3. Nemjee09:32

Well, if China decides to relax entry requirements then we could see demand to/from BEG boom. This could lead to more frequencies and destinations.
I think I read somewhere that China is reducing the quarantine period to just 2-3 days after which you go home and stay there for another week. It's a small step in the right direction.

With additional demand from China and JFK finally being profitable, there could be room for a third A330 which could be used to launch Toronto.

@Nemjee: Air Serbia needs volume in order to achieve profitability. You can't shrink yourself into success.

The way things look right now, TSN will be just ONCE per week. ORD twice in the summer and ONCE in the winter. What volume are you talking about?

CEO is so defensive about decision to pick ORD over YYZ he won't even comment AV's statement about Toronto as a destination to follow Chicago. Instead of rushing to launch YYZ in 2023 now that AC won't be a competitor, Air Serbia is still trying to justify picking Chicago due to strong Balkan community. Toronto also has it, and in 2019 it had 27% more passengers to BEG than ORD.

      Delete
    8. Nemjee15:26

I suppose if they were not rushing to launch China, Toronto would be launched at the same time as Chicago. As for volume, I'm referring to their growing network which is helping them grow into a profitable airline. Good thing is that they are growing without overexpanding.

Tesla and Pupin tails are marketing for domestic consumption where average audience recognizes them and expects the rest of the world to recognize them as global icons.

Rest of the world does not know who they are, esp Pupin. Go to boarding areas at Tijanjin, Chicago and New York JFK, show those pictures to 100 random people and there won't be any to recognize them. For all we know they could have put Aca Lukas and people would think it's some important person from Serbia. At least a large sticker on the tail (not just under cockpit windows) with their names would give a chance to curious onlookers to google that name and find out. Without a name it's a total marketing failure.

How difficult is to accept common sense and create two cheap and easy to apply stickers with their name, and if possible brief one liner description? Once YU-ARC comes back to Belgrade I expect novaS or some influencer to ask passengers exiting airport building who is the person on that picture? If Air Serbia wants to be embarassed, go ahead and leave it like this.

What I agree is that without a person's name and appropriate inflight reading material, educational context is lost. Nobody would bother googling a plane registration to find out about a face on a tail.

It has nothing to do with the price. Planes have a set time, after a certain amount of cycles, when they have to go for maintenance.

      Delete
    2. Anonymous11:12

Yes, and that's why when a company is dry leasing an aircraft watching that period is not so close because JU is paying the expenses for maintenance, which are not small for C and D checks and there needs time for aircraft to accumulate incomes for its overhaul. That's why I think that JU gets lower leasing rates for ARB

      Delete
    3. Anonymous20:52

      @anon 10.47
All A330s have always been going for C checks once per year (usually during dead season in November when JU operated twice per week). In the early days of the JFK route we had Etihad operate from BEG on behalf of AirSerbia while YUARA was undergoing checks, at one point we even had a short term wet leased aircraft (from Germany if I remember correctly) operate on the route etc
When ARB joined the fleet in has just undergone its checks, and only then it took over for ARA which was returned to the lessors and thus you didn't notice that the aircraft actually underwent them.
It is not the same like when you're buying a car that needs to go to "tehnicki" so the seller lowers the price of the car.

I wish they add some content on board such as a leaflet explaining who Tesla or Pupin were, add "From the immigrant to the inventor" as part of their Buy on Board offering on long-haul planes, etc. It would add for the visibility, set them apsrt from other carriers and really promote Serbian culture to everyone flying Air Serbia
