Wizz Air plans to further expand its operations from Skopje following the recent announcement of five new routes and the deployment of its sixth aircraft at the airport from late October. The airline has reached an agreement with the government for a sixth subsidised service, between Skopje and Cologne, which is expected to be scheduled shortly. This route will complement the previously announced services to Stockholm, Bari, Madrid, Larnaca and Prague. Cologne will become Wizz Air’s ninth destination in Germany from the Macedonian capital and was last operated by the airline between 2014 and October 2024. In total, Wizz Air will have launched nine new routes from Skopje in 2025 while discontinuing six.
In addition to launching new routes, Wizz Air will also increase frequencies on select services from Skopje. The low-cost carrier will add one additional weekly flight when compared to the previous winter on routes to Beauvais, Friedrichshafen, Milan Malpensa, Malta and Gothenburg, bringing each to three weekly rotations. Furthermore, an extra one to two weekly flights, depending on the month, will be introduced on services to Basel, for a total of eleven weekly, and Berlin, which will operate five times per week. On the other hand, Wizz Air will reduce frequencies on certain routes, cutting one weekly flight to both London Luton and Eindhoven, resulting in three weekly services each, and reducing operations to Nuremberg to twice weekly.
Commenting on Wizz Air’s expansion in Skopje, the General Manager of airport operator TAV Macedonia, Nejat Kurt, said, “These new routes reflect TAV Macedonia’s commitment to enhancing connectivity and expanding travel options from Skopje. Securing destinations such as Stockholm, Bari, Madrid, Prague, Cologne, and the previously announced Larnaca, particularly in new markets, has required long-term negotiations and close collaboration with airlines and the tourism sector. As the airport operator, our vision is to position Skopje Airport as a key regional hub”. He added, “With strong support from the government and the implementation of our incentive programs, we aim to attract carriers, especially those serving popular leisure destinations. These new routes create fresh opportunities for tourism, including summer holidays and city breaks, supporting sustainable passenger growth and reinforcing our presence on Europe’s tourism map. Importantly, they also contribute to increased inbound tourism, further driving long-term, sustainable traffic development”.
Excellent news for SKP

DeleteNot so excellent is that they flew the route FOR 10 YEARS, stopped it for a month and now relaunching again with subsides. This should be forbidden.
DeleteIt will be a year. They will probably restart in December so they can qualify for subsidies. They did the same with Stockholm. Completely agree with you though.
DeleteSame as easyJet / Geneva. Those are the rules though, two consecutive IATA seasons, and they're pretty boilerplate. Blame the incompetent government.
Delete(cont'd)
Delete.. especially since the gains from the inconsequential subsidies are lower than the lost revenue during those two seasons. However that's not obvious on paper and since CASK is the primary thing that matters these days they'll gladly take it. SMH.
Oh and if anyone has an issue with calling the subsidies inconsequential, well, just look at the figures. Back of the envelope will do. They always have been, except for the first a/c in 2011 since it was a completely unproven market so it covered some of the assumed risk. Such a hot take here though. SMH x2.
Wizz air stop flying Cologne from all its airports not only from Skopje because of the high airport taxes , now they return the airports on their map too. So when they have a chance for subsidies why not to get ir ?
DeleteHappy to see that W6 is finally growing and launching from Macedonia , also hope the trend will continue🇲🇰👏
ReplyDelete“Key regional hub”… this guy is delusional!
ReplyDeleteFor 7 years the airport was stagnating when all other ones was growing , it is very important to note from how successfull airport by 2019 SKP was also and OHD to what they become. The previous government did not do any single thing to rise the aiport. Government help is very crutial in this sector. If working hard and smart SKP will have bright future in terms of connections and main hubs routes.
DeleteFor which 7 years the airport was stangnating? SKP had trecord results two years ago when Wizz had 6 aircraft and back then they brought the jet and launched routes with out such heavy subsidies.
DeleteIf the government wants regional hub, then they should set up national carrier first and then work on the hub. LCC'a are dominantly for p2p passengers. And they are foreigners
DeleteIs this a sign Eindhoven is affected by Transavia route to Amsterdam??
ReplyDeleteYeah sure, even though there are no flights to AMS in winter
DeleteWhat do you mean ?
DeleteHow does one become a regional hub with no national airline
ReplyDeleteNational airline is not nessecery to become regional hub , you need main hubs airport connections thats how you becoming strong. How many countries are in europe without national carries...
DeleteSKP can become second charter hub in the world 😃
DeleteWizz air wich is the only airline with a base there does not do connections so what you said does not make sense
DeleteIs it only wizz air flying out of skopje ?
DeleteNo it isn't it is the only airline with a base (you can't transfer via skoplje with lufthansa or Turkish now can you) and it doesn't eaven offer transfers so SKP can't become a regional hub with 0 transfer possibility
DeleteJust bringing in more flights makes 4M pax yearly quite plausible. Further expansion will require much more effort, tho. Expansion of the terminal, improved economic condition of the locals, better land connections to the airport...
ReplyDeleteTheu already expanding the terminal inside , there was office which are now moved , and on their place will be , bigger passport check control , new restaurant ad well wider luggage scanner with larger capacity lines. And also current now capacity is for 4.5 million people which is possible to be reached out in years that coming
DeleteI believe Macedonia has now space for a small natuonal airline that is privately owned so some of those profits stays in the country.
ReplyDelete2 to 3 ATRs 600
2 to 3 Embraers
&
3 to 4 A320
Do we have the entreprenurial capability for this? Only time will show.
This is pretty much OU's fleet.
DeleteHow dare you? OU fleet is bright and shiny, Intergalactic Spaceship A220, you couldn't possibly compare it wit ATR and 320F 🤣🤣🤣
DeleteNorth Macedonia does not have the money or the ability to organise a national carrier neither through state funds (god forbid), or through private sources (awful track record in the region). Whilst countries might desire it, one has to realise the market is very small, and not yet rich enough for such a venture.
DeleteWhat other LCC routes are left?
ReplyDeleteAlso they could shift Luton to Gatwick.
And start expanding more out of Ohrid.
Wizz: the return of CPH & Bremen, Warzsawa/Krakow
DeleteRyanair: the above two plus Bergamo/Verona, Pisa, Palermo, Düsseldorf-Weeze, Paderborn/Münster, Stansted, MAN, W-Modlin ...
Could WizzAir launch:
ReplyDeleteSkopje-Athens
Skopje/Ohrid-Bucurest
Skopje-Sarajevo
Ohrid-Sofia
Skopje-Podgorica
?
No, they can't launch SJJ or TGD
DeleteThey absolutely can if they get the approval of B&H and Montenegro which they would.
DeleteNo LJU increased frequencies?
ReplyDeleteThey increased them last winter from 3 to 4
DeleteBut isn't A320 "too dense" for SKP-LJU? Where is that guy hidding now?
DeleteThis winter there will be four times per week to LJU with A321neo, total cspacity per week 1912 seats, compared to last winter there were 1080. So the capacity is almost double.
DeleteAny chance to grow even more? 6pw? Or do you think this is it…
DeleteAlways there is a chance to growing more ...
DeleteCologne is a welcome return
ReplyDeleteFor sure it is , would be good to see munich, dusseldorf and I think germany will be covered very well from skopje
DeleteSkopje Airport has come a long way under TAV. Now we just need more competition.
ReplyDeleteFor that we also need more people flying
DeleteSkopje Airport has come a long way despite TAV.
DeleteThere, corrected it.
In the end of the day , transport ministry is the one who sign contracts for new routes , bring new routes , new airline , not the airport. And yes final decision is the airline nobody else.
DeleteWhat about Tuzla?
ReplyDelete3 of fanboys favourite routes
ReplyDeleteThat airport is not accessible by public transport. Unreliable shuttle bus, expensive taxi or begging friends or family is required.
ReplyDeletehow is 20€ (or cheaper if you use the new taxi apps) for a taxi expensive???
DeleteFor the shuttle he/she has a point though-not unreliable, but time table is detached from reality= from flight departures/arrivals at airport. not in a mood to wait for an hour or more for the next shuttle from the airport to the city, or to get to the airport and wait an hour or more for departure.
DeleteHow do u expect public transport when more then half of the pax are not coming from Skopje but other cities and villages plus Kosovo? Explain to me. The bus is relieble.
DeleteHas public transport in NMk every been reliable? The lack of a proper airport bus is just a sign of useless governance for so long. The airport itself however is really quite lovely. I've always found it fast and easy to use.
DeleteSince you can write in English, i take it you should also be able to read: the point is not about reliability: busses come and depart at scheduled-the point was about available frequencies
DeleteThe airport shuttle bus stops on every important stop in the city and it has affordable price as well ,all the main points are covered.I dont get it why you dont use it ? If there is public bus the price would be the same , airport is not close to the city as well , so nobody will let bus drives for free or for 1 euro ....
DeleteSeems the fight with Ryanair begins...
ReplyDeleteIt started in 2016.
DeleteWell this is great but I’d preffer Ryanair to step in and offer some flights too. W6 has become so pricey that in many cases it is more affordable to fly OS, LH, TK or JU. They have completely abused the monopoly.
ReplyDeleteHowever, SKP can position itself as a hub for Kosovo and South Serbia for destinations other than Germany and Switzerland.
+1
DeleteThats correct , I was at the airport couple days ago , do you know that most cars I saw was from pristina , vranje and leskovac.. plus there is taxi from pristina with hybrid cars I saw more of them then Macedonian taxi cars ...
DeleteHappy to see WizzAir returning to Skopje and growing the base again.
ReplyDeleteIt was time +1
DeleteGood things are happening.
ReplyDeleteIt was also officially announced that the high-speed railway connecting Belgrade, Skopje, and Athens will include a stop at Skopje Airport. Macedonia plans to begin construction of its section in 2026, with completion expected by 2031. This development will significantly improve connectivity to the city and the wider region with the Airport.
There will be railway connection from the Skopje center to the airport , project is expected to start next year.
DeleteWhen can we expect Ryanair to enter Skopje airport
ReplyDeleteLikely December/January but talks are undergo ....
DeleteDoes Wizz have a Macedonian AOC?
ReplyDeleteWould love to see them flying to Belgrade same as they do with Ljubljana.
Maybe even from Ohrid.
No they do not.
DeleteMacedonia is more likely to enter the EU than Wizz get a Macedonian AOC.
DeleteLjubljana,Stuttgart,Madrid,Barcelona,Lyon,Prague,Bari,Stockholm Arlanda,Larnaca, I think those are the best routes launched from W6 in the past few years.... except Bari and Stuttgart all other are main country airports not second or village...which is amazing!!
