Flydubai to Bosnia and Croatia from December |
Flydubai will inaugurate flights to Sarajevo and Zagreb on December 8 and December 16 respectively. The low cost airline will operate two weekly flights from Dubai to Bosnia and Herzegovina’s capital while services to Zagreb will run three times per week. Commenting on the launch, Flydubai’s CEO, Ghaith Al Ghaith, said: “We remain focused on opening up underserved markets and strengthening air links from Dubai’s aviation hub to the region. The new flights to Bosnia and Herzegovina and Croatia represent new opportunities for travel, trade and tourism for passengers in both countries and the United Arab Emirates”. Flydubai will become the first carrier to operate direct flights from Dubai to Sarajevo and Zagreb.
These two new routes bring the number of destinations the low cost airline serves in Central and East Europe (CEE) and the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) to 26. The airline will then serve a total of 75 destinations within a five and a half hour flying radius of Dubai. Economy class return fares from Dubai to Sarajevo and Zagreb start from 420 euros with twenty kilograms of checked-in luggage free of charge. Furthermore, Flydubai will offer its business class service on both of these new routes with return fares starting at 1.570 euros and forty kilograms of checked-in luggage free of charge. All prices include taxes. Tickets are already on sale through the airline’s website.
Flydubai’s new flights to Bosnia and Croatia will give travellers an opportunity to transit via Dubai and connect to Emirates’ network to the Far East, South East Asia and Australia. On its Zagreb service, the low cost airline will compete indirectly against Qatar Airways, which will launch three weekly nonstop flights from Doha to Zagreb from October 1. The addition of Sarajevo and Zagreb to its network will see Flydubai serve a total of four cities in the former Yugoslavia this winter, complementing its existing flights to Belgrade and Skopje. The service to Belgrade will operate three times per week this winter while flights to Skopje will run twice per week. DeleteMost Australian visitors come via London not Frankfurt, same goes with all far eastern travelers, Korean air has direct links to Zagreb and JAL, but majority of visitors to Croatia come via London and Paris, not Dubai. So OU has a sound strategy in increasing its flights to these two cities.
DeleteFrankfurt is important for other connections but London and Paris are more important for its links to other non EU destinations.
Even with Dubai being directly connected not much will change, most Aussies come via Doha or Singapore if they wish to go directly to Zagreb. Dubai tries to barge in, but convenience for Australian visitors is more important than few dollars. Singapore has long been used by Aussies to get to Europe and there's little that will change that, sure Dubai has some Aussie travelers but not significant to change current status quo. Doha on the other hand is more convenient to Aussies cause its closer to Europe.
Doha is becoming more important as its base for many western operations in the region, including major US and UK military bases.
Long term Doha is far more exciting than Dubai, dubai is a concrete jungle wanna be tourist destination with two thirds of its properties empty and other third barely utilized.

DeleteThe only reason Qatar sends their A321 to Zagreb is because of limited competition at the airport. Let's be realistic, before flydubai, there were two real airlines offering flights to Asia, Turkish Airlines and Qatar (and Aeroflot to a much lesser extent).
The great thing for Zagreb is that flydubai (regardless of their relationship to Emirates) will open a whole new market thanks to their low-cost policy; low-cost is not to be confused with low-fare.
Even from Belgrade, one can find €400 tickets to places like India and the Arabian peninsula.

To start, compare SQ frequencies to EK. There are 12 daily flights to Australia from DXB only with EK (3 x SYD, 3 x MEL, 3 x PER, 2 x BNE, 1 x ADL) with a further 2 by QF (1 x SYD, 1 x MEL). Out of this, 3 x daily to SYD is A380, as well as 2 x daily to MEL, and 1 x daily to BNE with the A380, with the other flights operating on the B77W. EK connects alot to Europe from Australia.
DeleteAs for Doha being more interesting than Dubai, I guess you havnt been to either. Dubai is far from a concrete jungle. As or property not being used, there is not enough hotels to cater tourist demand, with another 100 5 star hotels alone to be built in the near future. You can find some interesting projects online which are being built or scheduled to be built.
Transiting is enough to see the huge difference between Doha and Dubai.

I am less impressed with FlyDubai than Qatar, so perhaps i am defensive of Qatar airways in a way cause I'd hate to see flyDubai coming to Croatia or emirates for that matter, but if they must I'd rahter use Singapore and Doha to connect to Australia.

Dubai whatever you want to say is far more 'civilised' in comparison to Qatar. The amounts of tourists, the business flows, the image in general. Qatar as with Qatar Airways are known for a serious lack of basic human rights. QR crew are lucky to escape upon arrival at outstations, and many have done so, but unfortunately on a very frequent basis, labor workers are sent home in coffins. Qatar may have western military baces but has cave man mentality. To defend QR in anyway is disappointing to say the least. If only you were slightly aware of what each euro your ticket was funding and supporting...
DeleteAs for the future of ZAG, it all depends on the state of OU. With Kucko as the CEO the airline doesnt have a bright future it should have. Many mistakes and many missed opportunities. OU should of been the one operating to DXB years ago but didnt, a huge lost opportunity imo. I believe the opposite, and believe that DXB had alot to offer OU. Its not about the diaspora but the Croats in Croatia too. They travel as well, and India seems as an interesting destination for vaccation for example, flying between VCE and DXB you will see many Croats. I think FZ will do well in ZAG and wish them success.

As to OU, look OU is just one among many airlines that fly to Zagreb, why should Zagreb base its future on performance of an airline, be it national carrier.
I simply don't understand mentality that is still set in 80s, we're in 21st century , national carriers are thing of the past, we need more carriers operating out of one base to get the best deal, by sticking to one carrier you only invite poor service, high prices, corruption and ineptitude.
As to OU missing on Dubai, I think we can all sleep, I am even happy OU didn't start Dubai flights or contemplated one, Istanbul is a massive hub only 2 hours flight from Zagreb, best place to connect to Australia and other destinations, Turkish has now double daily flights to Zagreb this and than you have 7 weekly flights to Doha,I think this is relatively good coverage for a small airport such as Zagreb,.

I heard that the Croatian Civil Aviation Authority refused to grant Air Serbia and Etihad a code-share agreement between Belgrade and the three Croatian destinations.

ReplyDeleteFZ have horrible fares to BEG, they are very expensive compared to TK and OS. Now that EY and JU operate double daily flight between AUH and BEG, FZ have had numbers significantly reduce. Last I checked on the loads back in febuary, they didnt even have 50% CLF.

Inhteresting facts: DXB-BEG is currently the longest route served by FZ, its 3.819 km and takes over 5h. With this introduction of new services Zagreb will claim this title. It is clear that Emirates, a company which created FZ to feed them isnt eager to start flying to either BEG or ZAG, since theyre now possessions in realms of Etihad Airways and Star Alliance, respectively. Also glad to hear they wont be discontinuing SKP.

DeleteOf 150 000 Kiwi and Aussie visitors to Croatia in 2013, some 80% came via London. London is far more important to Croatia than Frankfurt when it comes to Asian visitors, and you have like 60 weekly flights to Croatia from London each summer with 25 weekly flights in rest of the year.
Qatar is also sending A321 on a weekly basis during summers. Singapore no direct flights cause of Lufthansa, but there's a good chance Korean will introduce twice weekly service to Zagreb year round from 2015.
Croatia is rapidly becoming very popular destination for Koreans, Japanese and now Chinese, so direct links between Shanghai, Tokyo and Seoul year round is possible by 2017.
