NEWS FLASH

Bulgaria’s Gullivair has closed reservations for its two weekly service from Sofia to Skopje from May 21 with tickets no longer available for purchase. The route was launched just four weeks ago with much fanfare following diplomatic efforts. It is unclear whether the flights are being discontinued. The airline has not responded to questions regarding the route’s fate. The carrier has also closed reservations for its other scheduled international service, to Tirana, from May 14. Flights to Skopje are being maintained with the ATR72-600 turboprop aircraft.

I mean let’s be realistic. It takes 3 and half hours to travel between SKP and SOF by car (door to door). With the time required to drive from/to airports, be there at least 1 hour before departure (best case scenario), there is no way it can beat traveling by car

The truth is that SOF is connected to all of its neighbours via railway or road with the exception of Macedonia. New highway and rail is currently under construction to Serbia, Istanbul was long connected via rail, bus and road (hence lower number of flights and closer distance). Flixbus, train, Ryanair, and road to Bucharest, highway and train to Thessaloniki. A couple of weeks ago, someone posted a photo on Facebook of an almost completely empty Gullivair flight between Sofia and Skopje for obvious reasons. If someone is not welcomed in some place and you already know it, no need to insist visiting their place.
Look at Air Serbia, they relaunched BEG-SOF 8 years ago and never stopped the route ever since (SOF-BEG is historically quite an old route). This year it is ZAG and ZAD being connected to SOF and once LJU in 2019 which proved to be quite okay for a start as a destination before the demise of JP.

I believe they are not that incompetent. Was saying here before this services, both SKP and TIA can work as feeder services for North American flights. Until they start NYC, or /and whatever else in NA, they temporarily halted the flights not to make losses. Once NA starts, they will continue with the both. But if they don't start NA than probably both SKP and TIA, especially SKP will not be restarted

Come on, they're not going to start NA flights. This is like Southeast or Pragusa fairytales.

I would only ask why this flight was at 5:00 in the morning and who is responsible for this stupid decision?

Good riddance. This flight was only a political action for getting good headlines.

You did not comment the same thing when Israir suspended Tel Aviv-Skopje or on why them Israeli politics are so mean or chose neighbouring countries to fly to? Sorry, mate. 95% of the Balkan countries are enjoying a healthy number of growing visitors. Just look at BiH and Albania to begin with..SKP and OHD rely entirely on Albanian diaspora traffic or included in the itinerary of destinations if you are coming from BEG, DBV, TIA, SOF, etc. Many YouTube videos prove this. The current SKP traffic is mainly thanks to the hefty government subsidies.

Seems like routes from SKP can only work with subsidies now that PRN changed their commercial policy.
