Serbia and Venezuela are working on the introduction of flights between Caracas and Belgrade according to Serbia’s Foreign Minister, Ivica Dačić, following talks with his Venezuelan counterpart in Belgrade recently. “It would be extremely important for there to be nonstop flights to Latin America, while for Venezuela it would be significant due to the new opportunities it opens up and for Serbia to become its point of contact with Central Europe”. The two countries have inked an agreement to abolish visas for each other’s citizens and develop tourism. The United States Federal Aviation Administration cancelled a ban on flights between the country and Venezuela last month, while an economic recovery in Venezuela has seen a number of airlines increase operations to the South American state this year, including Iberia, Air Europa, TAP Air Portugal, Turkish Airlines and Copa Airlines. Several other carriers, including LATAM, have recently announced the resumption of flights to the country. Since the start of the war in Ukraine last year, the United States has eased sanctions against Venezuela, primarily in the oil exports sector, which has led to economic growth and recovery. Venezuela’s national carrier, Conviasa, operates to Europe with flights to Madrid. It boasts a fleet of over twenty aircraft including three Airbus A340-600s and one A340-300.

DeleteCanada won't happen any time soon because of the restrictions from the bilateral. For both JU and AC 2 weekly is simply not enough, they can't b competitive. You should ask Mr Trudeau to give more flights and then JU will put YYZ on its radar.

ATH-DAM operated by Air Mediterranean while ATH-BEN operated by Air Mediterranean and Marathon Airlines too.

ReplyDeleteHowever I have to say that for a few days now operations at BEG were very good. This puts the foundations for a better tomorrow and for BEG's transformation into an important European hub.

DeleteAnd which ones are those? In the last 10 years government has negotiated or renegotiated agreements with USA, Canada, China, India, Singapore, Australia, Maldives, Mexico and many more.
And what more is there for the government to do? They negotiated the same way with China so we got Hainan from PEK and JU to TSN and soon to PVG and CAN.
DeleteCanada has limited the number of frequencies to 2 per week. Serbia can't do much since Canada is one of the most protectionist countries on earth.
Dude Air Serbia is literally flying to 80 destinations. You have never had more destinations on offer from BEG. Get a grip.

DeleteSerbia is allowed to fly only once a week to TSN and will probably fly twice a week in the second year of operation. Sounds a lot more like protectionism.

You can always find someone to fly. There would probably be some cargo. I mean Conviasa can now fly to the US but government said they won't. They just dont run on commercial principles. At the same time they have flights to Damascus. Not saying they are empty as there is big Syrian and Middle East diaspora in Latin America but atill.

This potential flight is all about geopolitics and has nothing to do with actual passenger demand. I don't think it will ever come to fruition, but you never know with government-backed airlines.
DeleteAll airlines are backed by a government one way or another. Just look at Wizz Air, no one knows how many millions they got from Orban for their medical flights to China. Then there is Lufthansa which profits from government protectionism in many ways (Air Berlin bankruptcy saga, MEB3 limitations etc).

Around 20 June there was a Conviasa A346 in BEG airport, taking the Cuban president around Italy, Serbia and France. It certainly looked great there! :)

It can't because the Belorussian airspace is currently closed. But at least we have nonstop flights to places like Berlin, Stockholm, Prague, Bucharest... so it makes sense that we are thinking about Caracas and Baku.

DeleteBecause you have to understand that their main problem is not that these flights are being negotiated but rather than Belgrade keeps on developing quite nicely. This year has been difficult for many and it won't get any better in winter given how strong the season will be.
