Pristina Airport handled 1.104.435 passengers in 2020, representing a decrease of 53.4% on the year before, which is below the European average. The airport was the second busiest in the former Yugoslavia after Belgrade, with the pair being the only two to handle more than a million passengers in 2020. Pristina Airport was closed for commercial traffic for over three months, but its better than expected results were achieved mainly due to a large diaspora which is not as affected by travel and entry restriction when flying to and from their homeland. Overall, it was Pristina Airport’s slowest year since 2007. Eurowings remained its busiest customer, while Switzerland was its busiest market, as was the case in 2019.

Eurowings and Wizz Air were Pristina’s busiest airlines, although both saw significant declines in the number of handled passengers when compared to the previous year. Wizz Air managed to improve its positioning from fourth to second by trading places with rival easyJet, which was the runner up in 2019 but positioned fourth this time around. Air Mediterranean, a Greek charter carrier which operates flights on behalf of local tour operators, commenced operations from Kosovo this year and has quickly become one of its busiest airlines, placing itself in third position with 128.580 travellers carried. Swiss carriers Chair and Edelweiss performed well considering the circumstances, with the latter maintaining daily wide-body operations with its 315-seat Airbus A330-300 aircraft during the peak summer months last year.

It was closely followed by Germany with a 32% share, then Turkey (13%), Sweden (9%), Austria (5%) and the United Kingdom (4%). New York remains the busiest unserved route from Kosovo with over 4.500 passengers transferring through other points to reach JFK Airport (3.700) or Newark (850). Other most common cities reached by transferring through different airports were Frankfurt, Copenhagen, London Heathrow, Chicago, Helsinki, Brussels, Toronto, Paris Charles de Gaulle, Antalya, Washington, Ankara and Munich.
