Soon to the US via Ljubljana?
A major obstacle for the establishment of flights between India and Slovenia has been overcome after the two countries signed a Scheduled Air Services Protocol yesterday. Once the national parliaments of both countries ratify the Protocol, flights between Slovenia and India can be easily established. Last year Air India and Adria Airways signed a memorandum of understanding which was to see Air India code share on Adria’s regional flights, while in return the Indian national carrier would operate some of its services to the United States via the Slovenian capital. Plans were set for flights to be launched either during the 2012 summer season or the 2012/2013 winter season. However, Air India requested lower fuel prices at Ljubljana Jože Pučnik Airport and an exemption from paying fees in order to launch services to the Slovenian capital, all of which were denied.
Earlier this year, the Slovenian government, together with the petrol provider, Ljubljana Airport, Adria and Air India announced their willingness to get back to the negotiating table and discuss possible cooperation. Several months ago, the head of Ljubljana Airport, Zmago Skobir, commented on the issue, “I stress that this project could be beneficial for both the airport and Adria but it must be approached on an intergovernmental level”. The signing of the Scheduled Air Services Protocol, by the Slovenian Minister for Infrastructure and Urban planning, Zvonko Černač, and the Indian Civil Aviation Authority, indicates the government’s willingness to eliminate bureaucratic hurdles for a potential partnership between the Slovenian and Indian national carriers.
Meanwhile, exactly two months since the tender for the submission of non binding bids for the takeover of 74.9% of Adria Airways came to a close, no information has been released regarding the interested parties. It has been said that more than ten bids were submitted for the Adria share package.
Wonderful, two failing state-run airlines uniting! I am sure people will rush to fly on Adria and Air India in stead of Austrian Airlines, Lufthansa or Swiss.
ReplyDeleteWhy does Adria even exist?! They are as good as dead and no sign of improvement is visible on the horizon. Plus, Zagreb is not far away so for flights that won't be offered from Ljubljana they will offered from there.

DeleteWhy? It has a horrible fleet structure, there is no way it will ever make money by flying those fuel guzzling CRJ-200s and it seems that it cant position itself within the European market. It will end up being eaten up by other airlines until the government can no longer keep it on life support.

I am from LJU and would never consider ZAG as an alternative. With Venice (Marco Polo and Treviso), flight options and prices from there. Well, ZAG is not an alternative, definitely not.

ReplyDeletedoubtful that such flights will happen. ljubljana is a very small market and nobody is going to want to fly with air india of all airlines. but i'm glad to see belgrade and ljubljana pushing for flights to the us. if all goes well, air india and azal will commence flights. best of luck to both.

OK people it sounds strange but Air India flying from LJU to the US makes in some way sense.

Lufthansa and other airlines dont want it as a partner but AI needs one.
Second FRA and other big airports had issues with them.
I remember a day when FRA airport was closed for a half day because an AI pilot made a nearly crash landing and nearly ruined the runway.
To fix the runway the airport had to be closed for half a day.You can imagine what losses that means for other airlines and especially LH.
AI is a disastrous airline and is only a troublemaker.
So when nobody wants to cooperate with them they have to look for other partners.
So they approached for Adria.

Well, first of all, an airline cannot be judged by one pilot's (eventual) mistake and one (never heard of) incident.
Second, FRA has 3 runways (and plans to build the 4th, so the airport definitely won't be closed if one of its 3 runways are closed for some reason. Some delays, some irregularities, definitely, but "half day closed", no.
Third, with 777LR, and similar, with up to 18 hours range, why to land anywhere between India and North America? Huge passenger numbers from Slovenia? Definitely not. AI US traffic rights, maybie, but LJU out of all other, once again, I doubt.
And for all those mentioning ZAG in negative context, let's just wait mid 2013; maybie finally nice surprise will happen in ex-yu...

Also you should know that extreme longhaul nonstop to the US is in no way profitable for every airline and especially AI which has enough 777s.
Even SIA and Thai Airways had to stop their nonstop flights to Newark.

Sorry but Frankfurt has 4 runways, the last one was opened and it has already become fully operational a long time ago.
