Priština awaits new terminal, new flights and new passengers

Priština Airport is looking to end 2012 on a high after recording strong passenger growth, welcoming its first airline from the Middle East and seeing its new terminal rise. With 2013 in sight, several airlines have already announced new services to the city. As part of Scandinavian Airlines’ restructuring effort, which will see the launch of 45 new routes, Priština will gain direct flights to Stockholm, Gothenburg and Oslo which will accompany the carrier’s existing service from Copenhagen. Furthermore, Belle Air is expected to resume its much anticipated service from Tirana. Later next month the airline will launch flights from Priština to London Stansted Airport to fill in the void left by British Airways which suspended its Priština service in late October. Flights to Linz will also be launched later next month.

In the first nine months of the year, Priština Airport welcomed 1.188.272 passengers, an increase of 8.2% compared to the same period last year. Belle Air Europe is the leading airline carrying over 160.000 passengers so far this year, followed by Germanwings and Edelweiss. Slovenia’s Adria Airways, which has a base in Priština, carried just over 120.000 passengers to and from the city within the nine month period. Last week, the low cost Air Arabia became the first airline from the United Arab Emirates to operate flights to Priština.

Meanwhile, with further passenger growth expected in 2013, the construction of the airport’s new terminal is ongoing (as pictured above). Stretching over 45.000 square metres, the building will feature three air bridges and will be accompanied by a new apron, control tower and a car park with the ability to serve 1.750 vehicles. The investment, worth 120 million euros, was originally planned to open in January, though it seems unlikely the deadline will be met. However, the new terminal should be ready by the start of the 2013 summer season. Priština is expected to retain its title as the third busiest airport in the former Yugoslavia, behind Belgrade and Zagreb. It took the position over from Ljubljana last year.

      I don't understand, what's the relation (even indirect) between Zagreb and Pristina Airport? They pose no threat to one another, quite the contrary. This comment would make somewhat sense if you said "in your face Skopje" but even than it would be questionable at best.

      Why should be Pristina or Ljubljana be less relevant than Beograd? Except BiH(republic of srpska) nobody from other ex Yu countries is travelling via Beograd..

      @Anon 7:34 PM

      Boy, are you wrong. The largest city in Republika Srpska, Banja Luka, uses primarily ZAG - it is way closer than Belgrade. However, Tuzla area, which is in the Federation, primarily uses BEG. People from Eastern Croatia, say Osijek, Zupanja, even Brod, use BEG frequently, although not exclusively.

      Nationalism and/or patriotism only brings you so far - but to actually cash in on a business, you need a good product and a fair price, and BEG and ZAG apparently deliver.

    For Air Arabia, they just started with fights to Prishtina (22 November), to early for figures. I'm not sure how many times a week Pagasus fly to Prishtina. I know TK has two flights per day...
