Zagreb tops 2011 result

Zagreb Airport handled 2.342.309 passengers in 2012, just surpassing its 2011 result, thus making it its busiest year on record. The 2012 figure represents a 1% increase compared to the year before when the airport welcomed 2.319.098 passengers through its doors. On the other hand, the number of operated flights decreased from 21.180 in 2011 to 19.527 in 2012. The airport will hope for a big passenger boost in 2013 thanks to the country’s entry into the European Union this summer. In the past, new member states have seen a surge in air traffic in the year of entry.

Zagreb’s figures were boosted by a solid performance in December. Croatia’s busiest airport handled 145.761 passengers, an increase of 3.3%. As a result, the airport has secured its position as the second busiest airport in the former Yugoslavia.

Planned new look international departures area

Although the construction of its new terminal is on the rocks, Zagreb Airport has announced the upgrade of its international departures area. Tender procedures for the company to carry out the necessary improvements have begun. The 790.000 euro upgrade will include the refurbishment of cafes, shops and departure lounges. Zagreb Airport spokeswoman, Lidija Capković Martinek, says the upgrades are necessary due to new European Union regulations. Furthermore, some areas of the airport have not been upgraded in more than forty years. Tender procedures will last until January 31, after which construction work should commence.

"Furthermore, some areas of the airport have not been upgraded in more than forty years"

That is not true. All airport outside and inside was reconstruct from 2007-2009. There is no any part of public part of airport which was not totally reconstruct.

In Zagreb airport there are rumours that in summer 2013 (after Croatia enter EU) there will come:

    - KLM
    - SAS
    - flyDubai
    - and Croatia airlines will open 5 new lines from ZAG: Stockholm, Oslo, Varsava, Moskva i Osijek

I doubt rummmor regarding FlyDubai, SAS, KLM will come back as they alredy fly to Croatia, so coming to Zagreb won't make much difference for them, but also Amsterdam Zagreb is very busy route, 8th bustiest international route for Zagreb Airport with 120000 pax, It would be mad not to improve on that, and I'm sure with Air France taking big interest in Zagreb KLM is only natural progression.

Iberia instead of seasonal flight might do full 3 weekly flights to Zagreb from 2014, they had very good response to their season twice weekly flights in 2012 and this is bound to increase in 2013 and most likely convert in to a full trice a week service from 2014.

I only wonder if Croatian Airlines will be able to compete with so many airlines on most major routes. CA is a very good airline, flew a few times with them, they can be proud of their service but being good isn't enough, price wise CA must be able to offer good deal, doesn't need to be the cheapest but it would help and it would also help if they stick to their schedule. CA needs to be more aggressive and must ensure that scheduled destinations are serviced through out the year and not only when season is over to cover holes.

      I also doubt about flyDubai.

Iberia just publish summmer time-tible with ZAG-MAD as seasonal route which will not even fly all summer. Season is longer than last year, and they will fly on Saturdays and Sundays, but will finish at 15th September.

Those are brand new marble stairs to 1st floor (a'la card restaurant, self-service restaurant, bar, relaxation zone with beds for passengers rest, VIP lodge, conference room and operation service offices) and to 2nd floor (bar in open spectators terrace). Just left of those stairs you have panoramic elevator. Those stairs were built in 2008.

Despite the age of the building Zagreb is a very attractive airport and will look even better once the departure area is completed.

Only real issue with Zagreb is the size and capacity of the terminal which unless addressed could have a negative impact on growth.

Guys - Purger and Q400 - come on, let's be real.

zagreb Airport is by no means an attractive airport. Sure, its interior was significantly improved within last 3-5 years, with additional services/amenities (self check in, WiFi, new signalization, VIP salon, Spectator's terrace, outside building area (passenger drop off area).

However, the exterior looking from the position of the runway has remained unchanged. Food and other shopping facilities fall under expectations. Restaurant Faust Vrančić is a joke. Sandwich bar on the bottom floor too. Not to mention that once you pass the security check, you have no decent place to grab anything to eat. Duty is all right I suppose.

Let's just say that Zagreb Airport can be given a clear "pass" when compared to other airports in the ex Yu. But in no way it is an "attractive airport". My opinion...

Can't wait for construction of the new terminal.

I agree, probably should have chosen my words better but for what the operators have and the countless set backs when it comes to the new terminal they are actually doing a nice job.

Congrats to ZAG! A great achievement, and would be far better if the new terminal was actually in place.

A 10% drop YOY for flights to the airport is a noted concern - however this is countered by higher load factor on all flights.

Lets see what 2013 brings, hopefully more flights and airlines. OU has much to gain in 2013 with Croatia joining the EU - but will be limited by the lack of expansion of fleet.
