Cologne becomes Wizz Air’s 14th destination out of Skopje
Wizz Air will launch flights from its base at Skopje Alexander the Great Airport to Cologne Bonn Airport in Germany next summer season. The new flights will operate twice per week, every Monday and Friday, starting April 4. Tickets are already on sale. Cologne becomes the fourth new destination the low cost airline will be launching out of the Macedonian capital next summer, joining Beauvais, Charleroi and Hahn. In addition, it becomes Wizz Air’s fourteenth destination from the city. Next year, the low cost airline will base a second aircraft in Skopje and boost frequencies to Basel Mulhouse, Dortmund, Eindhoven, Gothenburg, Malmo and Memmingen. Wizz Air has had a successful run at Skopje Airport since basing its first aircraft in the city last year. Six of its routes are subsidised by the Macedonian government while the rest is operated on its own accord. This year, Dortmund has proven as Wizz Air’s most popular destination to and from Skopje. The airline has an average of 158 passengers per flight or a load factor of 88.2%. It is followed by Gothenburg with 156 passengers (86.9%) and Memmingen and Basel both with an average of 155 passengers per flight (86%). Eindhoven sees an average of 153 passenger (85.1%), Stockholm 148 (82.4%) and Milan 144 (80.2%). The Skopje - Treviso - Skopje service has seen the lowest load factor so far this year with an average of 140 passengers per flight or 78.2% of the cabin occupied.
Meanwhile, Macedonia’s busiest airport continues to struggle with fog and smog. Yesterday, all flights to the city were either cancelled or diverted to other airports. Germania, Adria, Austrian, Flydubai, Air Serbia and Croatia Airlines diverted their flights to Ohrid while Wizz Air rerouted to its base in Sofia. Helvetic Airways, Pegasus Airlines and Turkish Airlines cancelled their flights to Skopje yesterday. The airport’s closure during the busiest days of the winter season could jeopardise its attempt to break the one million passenger mark this year.

DeleteNice! Air Serbia just took off from Belgrade and it writes that it is heading to Skopje. However, it was the same yesterday but the flight ended up in Ohrid.

In my humble opinion, they should have taken their passengers from SJJ to BNX by by bus and done the job that way.
If adding new routes (and frequencies) keeps up I think Skopje will reach 1.5m passengers. Even with all the subsidiaries its good to see ppl, cargo moving around. Hopefully next year there might be some change in the air and we can see direct Skopje - Thessaloniki or Skopje - Athens flight because those flights are bound to be at least 85% full when you'll exclude the politics from ppl's life. Overall very good year for all the airports in ex-yu, keep up like that, good to see Belgrade is breaking records as well.
ReplyDeleteYeah, Skopje might be the most underserved airport in Ex-Yu. That airport could easily break 1.5 million in a few years if there was a strong airline in the country.

ReplyDeleteBtw. Yesterday I was flying for the first time in my life to OHD. The scenery is just amazing while approaching- lake, mountains + few minutes before you
see the Albanian adriatic coast while descending. It's really unique view.

ReplyDeleteOT: Sarajevo is still effectively closed due to fog. Meanwhile Mostar, only two hours away, sees sunshine... so if Austrian or any other airline had a base there, it would have been much simpler to get people to Bosnia rather than flying to Dubrovnik and then passing three borders!

Does anyone know if JU 182 from Belgrade to Tivat might be upgauged to an A319 in summer? It carriers the codes of both Aeroflot and Etihad. It probably gets quite a lot of connecting traffic, especially in summer.

ReplyDeleteI think Skopje is just going to miss the million mark. They had roughly 925,000 a the beginning of the month and would easily have had over 100,000 pax in December but almost a full week of no flights (only a couple here and there) makes that difficult. It will be interesting to see if Ohrid will get to 100,000, they got some but not all the diversions (Wizz air the biggest operator went to Sofia).

DeleteYou might find Skopje numbers funny but the two cities are a lot closer than you might think. Sure you could argue Belgrade is three and a half times busier but with a population of over 7 million, the roughly 3.5 million passengers is proportionally quite similar to Skopje's 1 million considering Macedonia is just 2 million.

Wizz could easily take up the LF on their TSF route simply by changing SKP with OHD, as most of the passengers are from the Ohrid, Struga and Debar region workers in the line between Padua and Udine, of course it is always good to have a cheap flight to/near Venice...Would've been great too if BZN had a longer rwy, same type of pax like TSF.Most of this goes for MMX/GSE too, with wider contribution by the diaspora pax with origin from Resen and Bitola/Prilep.
