Air Serbia temporarily cancels Tel Aviv service over security concerns

Air Serbia has temporarily suspended flights from Belgrade to Tel Aviv after a rocket landed just over one kilometre away from Ben Gurion Airport on Tuesday evening. Most European airlines have cancelled their flights to Israel’s largest city today while US-based carriers have also halted all services to the country over the next 24 hours. In a statement, the Serbian national carrier, which was scheduled to operate its Tel Aviv service this morning, said, “Air Serbia announces that flights to Ben Gurion International Airport in Tel Aviv will be suspended for the next 24 hours. This measure has been taken to safeguard the security of passengers and crew, in light of the current unstable situation. Air Serbia continues to monitor the situation and will provide updates as further information comes to hand”. The Serbian national carrier operates daily flights to Tel Aviv with its Airbus A319.

The halt in service comes less than a week after Israel began a ground operation in Gaza and as airlines around the world re-think their flight paths over conflict areas in the wake of the crash of Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 in eastern Ukraine. The European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) said it "strongly recommends" that airlines should avoid operating to and from Tel Aviv. Lufthansa, KLM, Air France, Alitalia, easyJet, Aeroflot, Transaero, Turkish Airlines, Delta and American Airlines are just some of the carriers to have cancelled their flights to Tel Aviv today. Yesterday, Israel's transportation ministry said, "Ben Gurion Airport is safe and completely guarded and there is no reason whatsoever that American companies would stop their flights and hand terror a prize". In addition, the ministry said airlines have “overreacted” to the security scare.

Elsewhere in the former Yugoslavia, Croatia Airlines is scheduled to operate its service from Zagreb and Dubrovnik to Tel Aviv tonight. The carrier is yet to issue a statement weather the flights will go ahead. Charter carrier Israir Airlines is scheduled to operate a flight from Tel Aviv to Ljubljana this morning. Israeli-based airlines have been unaffected by the security incident and continue to operate normally. Adria Airways is to run its service to Israel’s largest city from Ljubljana just after midnight. Currently, it is unknown whether these flights will go ahead and how the situation will unfold.

Adria Airways has now cancelled flight JP604 from Ljubljana to Tel Aviv which was to depart just after midnight.

Croatia Airlines has now cancelled tonight's flight from Dubrovnik and Zagreb to Tel Aviv as well.

Air Serbia has extended its Tel Aviv suspension for a further two days. In a statement, the carrier said, "After further evaluation of information pertaining to the events in Israel, Air Serbia announces that it will continue with a suspension of its flights to Ben Gurion International Airport in Tel Aviv for a further 48 hours. This decision is in line with recommendations and guidance being provided by The European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA), as well as the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). At all times, the ongoing safety and security of passengers and crew remains Air Serbia’s primary concern. Further updates will be provided as and when they come to hand”.

Kraj rasprave.

Leave Rodney alone - he is a legend here...
Also, Serbia - or any country, for that matter - could use more people like him, those who care about the "old country"...

anon @ 12.17pm .... geez, you are such an ignorant arse ... you criticize a person like Rodney - who offends no one, respects all and above everything, loves his roots, culture and all things around aviation across ex-yu.

I see where your criticism comes from - you hate yourself and everything associated with the motherland. You must be such a sad soul who can't look at yourself in the mirror.

Moreover, you have proved what an ignorant grommet you are in saying that the air Serbia logo is Arabic. You know nothing about Serbia or its history.

The logo designed by the young designer from Novi Sad was inspired by Miroslave Jevandjelije - from the Nemanjic dynasty during the Byzantine era.

A quick search on google would do wonders for your understanding of Serbian history.

You can certainly have an opinion about the logo / livery and whether you like / dislike it - no issues there. But don't go and post crap about it being Arabic and god knows what else - and especially in putting the boot into someone like Rodney - who has more credibility as a regular contributor to this blog than you do with such hate filled posts about your culture and roots
Your comment says everything about what

If some missile would fall close enough to damage any plane, who would compensate that airline? This situation is nothing like a Tripoli case, but I'm curious, how things are done?

I think it's the insurance company. I remember hearing that insurance companies will cover the costs of the Malaysia Airlines shooting both to the company for the lost plane and to families of the passengers for lost lives.

Theres no doubt in that. Theres issue about whether carriers are inasured for financial loss they suffer when due to war or terrorism they have to cancel or reroute flights.

Uglavnom platice Ukrajina, jer nije obezbedila osnovnu funkciju drzave,

Why not ?? Dude, do you have any idea about how the world of aviation functions ?? There is something called insurance and risk premiums. Flying into declared 'war zones' in the face of regulatory warnings from organisations such as EASA and the FAA, shoots your risk profile and premiums through the roof. Heaven help any airline that experiences any incident as a result - the costs could bankrupt an airline. Go do some homework before you post such stupid comments.
