Etihad CEO looks back at Air Serbia’s first year and reveals future plans |
The President and CEO of Etihad Airways, as well as Vice-Chairman of Air Serbia, James Hogan, has summed up the carrier’s first year of operations as a "success story". Attending the airline’s Supervisory Board meeting in Belgrade, Mr. Hogan said that by repositioning Serbia’s national carrier and accepting change, Air Serbia will record a profit by the end of the year, labelling this as an “extraordinary” feat. “To compete globally, you have to figure out how to find partners. When it comes to Serbia, I know the region, I used to work with JAT in Australia. We looked at Belgrade’s geographical position as a crossroads in the Balkans and felt that we had the opportunity in Europe to connect Abu Dhabi with Serbia and beyond”, Mr. Hogan said. He added, “We employed a similar model as we did with Air Seychelles. We had to rebuild the business, which meant eliminating the past, bringing in a fleet of good planes and applying sound financial practice. However, I had to be certain we could return Air Serbia to profitability”.
Commenting on Air Serbia’s future outlook, Mr. Hogan said, “It is important for Serbia to continue building its brand in the aviation industry. We will open the airline’s new head office in Belgrade. Air Serbia has the opportunity to become the number one airline in the Balkans. We are working closely with our stakeholders, as well as Jat Tehnika, and we also plan to open new premises at Belgrade Airport. We are focused on investing in our people, services, improved aircraft utilisation, promoting our brand, cost savings and improving traffic flow through Belgrade Airport”. Etihad’s CEO also affirmed plans for Air Serbia to launch long haul flights to the United States. “We plan on reintroducing flights from Belgrade to the United States. It is important that everything we do is commercially viable, that every new destination we launch is profitable. For our flights to the United States it is necessary to reach an agreement with their respective authorities”, Mr. Hogan noted
Responding to public criticism over the potentially costly deal the government made with Etihad for the latter’s part-takeover of Jat Airways, Mr. Hogan said, “What was the alternative? For there to be no national carrier at all. That vacuum would have been filled by Ryanair, easyJet, Wizz Air or whoever. In my opinion, what we have now is a strong national airline whose aircraft fly across Europe and to Abu Dhabi. A successful carrier acts as an ambassador, something people in Serbia should be proud of. We have employed over 300 people and are moving towards profitability”, Mr. Hogan concluded.

ReplyDeleteTodays flight JP310 to ZRH is being operated by ATR72. Could this be OU's plane? If I am not mistaken, some time ago JP and OU signed a deal to exchange planes based on demand to optimize fleet utilization.
OU doesn't have Atr-72, it would have to be a Q400. It was most likely a mistake in the system.

DeleteNot sure how you know that EUR415 is the av salary in Air Serbia, but if that is true, then it is higher than the av salary in Serbia, so their employees are doing exceptionally well.
DeleteI would also say that since JAT was losing money for the last 20 years or so, these employees were equally exceptionally lucky to be earning any salary at all ...
LH and AF offloading more routes to their own LCC's, OS push to be under Tyrolean cost model, DY outsourcing crew to Thailand, AF and LH pilot strikes... don't you get the picture? Low labour cost is one of the biggest competitive advantages Europe-based airline can have!

ReplyDeleteOne has to be stupid not to make profit with 10 brand new aircrafts for free! Great success, next year try it with 20 new aircrafts, remove CAPEX and be proud again. And maybe after years you may want to check what Serbian government promised/gave to UAE in return :)

ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, the best Air Serbia can do is to rank third best in the Balkans, behind Turkish Airlines and Aegean. Let's not forget that both of these carriers have a lot of high-yielding O&D traffic to their primary hubs, not to mention good infrastructure and a vibrant summer season. Aegean is expanding by adding five A320 to its fleet which will be used to expand both their Athens hub and their island operation/charter flights. They are not as aggressive as some other airlines but they are not a joke. Not to mention that Athens airport is fantastic and they have so much space for further expansion.
As for Air Serbia, let's be realistic. The airport is small, luggage sorting facility is still an issue and the airline will operate a fleet of only 15 aircraft this winter. I wouldn't call that a success story. That said, I would call Air Serbia a project with the greatest potential out there.

DeleteWhile technically correct, around the world Turkish is not viewed as a "Balkan carrier", but rather compared to ME3 model on a global scale, so are not part of this race as they are way ahead.
DeleteSo Aegean is ahead at this point, that's true, but Hogan was talking about future opportunities. Unlike Aegean, Air Serbia has only one hub, it wants to add long haul to the mix and act as a mini transit hub in the region, so the plans for Aegean and Air Serbia growth are different.
As for the airport, plans call for significant increase in capacity at BEG.

Samo mesec dana deli od prve godinjice stupanja na scenu nacionalnog prevoznika Er Srbije, kojoj sam zacetak pocinje stvaranjem drustva za vazdusni saobracaj 1925 i samo pocinjajne prvog avio prevozioca Aero Puta 1927 godine. Prva godisnjica AIR SERBIA po tegobama u nekim segmentima podseca na teskoce samog pocetka rodonacelnika putnicke avijacije u Srbiji AERO PUTA i svega sto je potelklo iz Njega do danas.

Svakako da ce ako vec nije, podrucje USA, Kanade i dalekog istoka pokriti osobe profila Steave-a Sipke. Po imenu ovog coveka prvenca u razvoju avio kompanije moze se dati Njegovo ime i prilaznom putu sa novog Kraljevackog putnickog terminal do glavne saobracajnice Kraljevo - Beograd. Jos pocetkom devedesetih radeci u Qantas-ovoj bazi izmedju hangara i terminala na Sidnejskom aerodromu rodila se ova ideja. Prvi put sada za prvu godisnjicu AIR SERBIA, javno iznosim na ovom forumu. Pa molim Gospodina Kondica, celnika AirSERBIA, zajedno sa Vladom Gospodina Vucica, to considering this idea. I have a dream! Za ovo nije potreban zajam ni preveliki trud. DeleteFunny about the 2 instances of 'collateral damage' you refer to. Airport recently reported increase in profits while it's share price has soared 50%. Pre 2014 debts to JT have been taken over by the Govt while each and every bill from 1 Jan is being paid. You are singing the wrong tune here my friend ... If there was no JU, what would JT be doing today ? probably out of business, since JU is 80% of its business. Airport on the other hand, wouldn't have had an extra 1m passengers at this time of the year ... Do something more useful with your time ... go pick plums or plough some livade - fare more productive than your misinformation efforts here
DeleteInače je poznato da je Jat sve fakture uredno plaćao aerodromu i tehnici, plaćanje je prestalo tek kada je stigla Air Serbia.
DeleteTakođe je poznato da je Aviogenex do prošle godine leteo na 60 destinacija sa 20 aviona, a onda je došla Air Serbia i sve propade.
Ukratko, komercijalni vazdušni saobraćaj u Srbiji je bio jedna profitabilna sonata u kojoj je sve prštalo od razvoja i profita, dok nije došla Air Serbia i uništila hiperprofitabilni Jat, futuristički moderan aerodrom i svetskog lidera Aviogenex.
Izdaja!
Pa nije izgledao tako u avgustu prosle godine. Prema tome prica kako su Etihad i Air Serbia u proteklih 11 meseci unistli Aviogenex je smesna. Nema veze sa vezom.

ReplyDeleteToday i read that Turkish Airlines flies seven or nine times daily(!) to Kuwait only to fill transfer pax who went further to Western European destinations.
Also Flydubai and Gulf Air are thinking about opening bases there.
Kuwait Airways seems to deep sleep, so everything goes to foreign carriers.
In a single month KWI handled more than a million pax.
I dont know why Etihad is sleeping too in this case...
They should get Air Serbia a new A319 and begin direct flights to Kuwait to fish transfer pax!
Begin with three dailies and in summer increase to daily!
If they can do it in Beyrut than they can do same everywhere western of Abu Dhabi.
Yap and start flying to Venice with some rich Arab tourist. Rest will go to European hubs.

Mr Tourer ... I would suggest to 'ride 'to the Belgrade Stock Exchange website and download both Q1 and Q2 trading updates from BEG Airport. There you will find all .... Airport is even more profitable today than it was 6 mths ago or 12 mths ago .... Share price is been on an upward trajectory since last year.

As for the "net profit", can you find out in how many years since inception was Alitalia profitable? Did they at least make profit for half of the years? It's easy to find out!

I would also like to add that I find it quite sad that the moment someone decides to regularly post on here using his nickname, he immediately gets attacked by a throng of miserable anonymous vultures. I am not just talking about myself but of others too, Purger being a good example.

- za sve ostale usluge na BEG plačaš 50%
- i još si mjesecima dužan na BEG za onih ostalih 50%
- plaćaš 50% NIS-u za gorivo i to na račun R.Srbije
- dobijaš desetke milijuna USD subvencija od R.Srbije
- R. Srbija ti otpiše sve dugove do 1.1.2014. pri čemu su dugovi za posljenju godinu (iako si ti preuzeo firmu u oktobru) daleko veći nego što su bili ikad prije, dakle u tim dugovima je i školovanja posada za novi avion, rebrending, marketing, dio leasinga, dio troškova u budućnosti (npr. nauručiš potrošnog materijala za cijelu godinu unaprijed i ubasiš ga u dug).
- R. Srbija ti upuca stotinu milja USD kojima financiraš dumping karte, troškove leasinga, poslovanja...
Pa moraš biti kronična budala da tako ne budeš profitabilan. I moja polupismena baka bi učinila kompaniju tako profitabilnom. Na račun preznih obveznika Srbije. Progledajte ljudi, progledajte!
Uz LF od tek 68% na razini cijele godine, i cijenama kate pola jeftinijim od konkurencije koja ih je već spustila ispod minimuma da pokuša biti konkurentna nema boga miloga da Air Serbija bude profitabilna bez stotina milijuna USD od strane R Srbije koja ih je dala direktno i indirektno Air Serbiji.

DeleteNegde je napisano da vlada Srbije nije jos uplatila 100% svog dela finansiranja Air Serbije, vec su subvencije zapravo preostali deo tih uplata sa strane vlade. Da je vlada plivala u kesu (a nije), uplatila bi odmah 100% svojih obaveza i od tog trenutka bi Air Serbija placala sve isto kao i ostali, bez ikakvih subvencija. Ako je ukupan iznos subvencija jednak preostalom dugu vlade, racun deluje cist. Naravno ako je sve ovo istina.

Delete2. Croatia nikada nije dobivala popuste od INA-e, gratis usluge ili 50% popusta na ZAG, SPU, DBV, PUY, ZAD, RJK, OSI ili BWK, nikada nije dobivala apriorne subvencije. Jedino i samo što je dobivala su legalne i legitimne PSO subvencije i to isključivo za poticaj domaćim linijama. Niti jedna inozemna linija ili nebrojiv trošak nije bio nikada subvencioniran. U PSO definiranani su konkrena linija, broj polazaka, minimalni broj dnevnih frekvecnija, obveza pojedine frekvencije prema vremenu polaska (npr. prvi polazak iz SPU za ZAG mora biti prije 7:00 sati, posljednji iz ZAG za SPU nakon 20:00 sati), obveza ostvarivosti linije, obveza letenja cijele godine, a ne samo sezonski (osim za OSI, BWK i RJK)... sve u skladu sa propisima EU.
Srbija osim subvencija nije jos uplatila ni evra u kesu.

Delete- Jat je dugovao Aerodromu Beograd.
- Jat je dugovao NIS-u, pa mu je onda fakturisana najveća cena u odnosu na ostale aviokompanije kako bi NIS na taj način dobio i deo duga.
- Jat je dugovao za održavanje aviona.
- Jat je dobijao desetine miliona dolara godišnje od Vlade Srbije.
Jat i pored svega toga imao sve manji broj aviona, letova, putnika.
I pored svega toga svake godine je imao sve veći i veći minus.
The only one who could be happy is Mr. Hogan, because he suceeded in "nasamariti" the Serbs, as he now did with the Italian tax payers. Etihad collected the prepaid money for the Airbus deal 1998 ( btw....where is it?), cashes in for management support ( for young EY managers running around in Belgrade), cashes in for leasing of Aircraft, cashes in for providing crews, cashes in for letting AS doing maintenance by airberlin (are they really the cheapest?), gets 50% discount on airfuel and between 50% and 100% discount on airport services. I am sure after next government change it will be revealed as one of the biggest scandals in serbian business history. I am sure that overall negative effect by Air Serbia on the taxpayers back is the double of what old JAT have caused on the yearly basis....ok, but therefore at least we got a couple of old A319s with a livery designed by a student on her laptop!

DeleteSeriously? Serbia's taxpayers should send huge "Thank You!" card to Etihad for helping then get out of the atrocious, binding deal made during Slobodan Milosevic reign.
JAT paid $25M to Airbus (not Etihad!) back then and that made the deal binding. They could not legally get out of that deal at any cost. T's & C's of that deal allowed Airbus to have separate contract (with separate price and payment schedule) for each of the eight birds! They could also raise prices by I think 2% for a certain period. Worst of all, JAT would not own a single aircraft until the last one is fully paid! Talk about the toxic deal!
Not only Etihad helped Air Serbia with Airbus shredding that contract, but they also leveraged their massive order with Airbus to get solid discounts (Airbus never officially discloses exact discounts, but unofficial savings are in $100M- $140M for 10 planes) for future Air Serbia A320NEO.
