| Ljubljana Airport positions itself as EX-YU's sixth busiest airport |
Following Skopje Alexander the Great Airport’s five month passenger lead, Ljubljana Jože Pučnik Airport has managed to close the gap and overtake its Macedonian counterpart. Ljubljana Airport, which is traditionally busier than Skopje, was outperformed during the first half of the year. However, a stronger performance during the past few months continued into July when it handled 171.772 passengers, an impressive increase of 16.2%. The number of operated flights also improved, increasing by 10.2% to 3.420. During the first seven months, Ljubljana welcomed 798.297 travellers, up 11% on the same period in 2014. Furthermore, the airport recorded a net profit of 600.000 euros and sixteen million euros in revenue over the first half of the year. As a result, its net profit increased by 84.000 euros compared to 2014.
Ljubljana Airport’s growth over the past few months was fuelled by both Adria Airways and foreign carriers such as Turkish Airlines and Air Serbia, which increased their flight offering to the Slovenian capital this summer. Furthermore, Swiss International Air Lines launched services from Zurich earlier this year. In 2016, LOT Polish Airlines will inaugurate six weekly flights from Warsaw to Ljubljana on March 1. Some 12.000 passengers are expected to use the service in its first year. "If we were not in a position to say that the airport was competitive with others in the region a few years ago, this is definitely not the case today”, Ljubljana Airport said in a statement.

Despite falling slightly behind Ljubljana, Skopje Airport also saw impressive growth in July. It handled 164.431 travellers during the month, up 24.4% on 2014. Overall, numbers during the January - July period improved 15.9% to 773.152 passengers. Of those, low cost carriers held a 57% passenger share at the airport. With Ljubljana and Skopje now neck-and-neck, the two airports have positioned themselves as the sixth and seventh busiest in the former Yugoslavia respectively. The list is headed by Belgrade, followed by Zagreb, Split and Dubrovnik, with Pristina Airport remaining in fifth place.

Ljubljana has had really strong growth over the last few months and it will be interesting to see who will prevail between SKP and LJU at the end of the year. SKP will also grow fast over the next few months.
ReplyDeleteI had no idea that Macedonia was overriding Slovenia in terms of passengers and that both countries are still in the race... I cannot believe that Slovenia, as a European Union country for more than a decade, with a shaped tourist product, more business activities etc. can be crashed by a small, "Balkan" and "unstable" country as is Macedonia. Go Macedonia!

DeleteCheck again. In some parts of Pakistan scores of civilians die every day. One does not have to leave his entire country destroyed in order to qualify for the asylum. And even if it is driven simply by the wish to have a better life - can anyone really judge them? What would you do if you had to survive on 3$ per day in some god forsaken part of the world? Half of the entire Balkans emigrated abroad to earn some money, should they be returned to sender as well?

DeleteMany illegal workers and assylum seakers from Serbia go not only to EU but to the US as well. We have seen even chartered flights bringing them back to Serbia. There are even posters in BEG departures stating consequences for illegal assylum seakers.
But this is extreme and Im surprised they passed through in DXB and more than 1.
Just coach them to the hungarian border and show them the way to the EU like it's done with thousands every day in Serbia/Macedonia.

DeleteLJU has a bigger number of seasonal flights and charters than SKP, so in august ljubljana should also have more pax. In september starts the real race, and we will see which airport prevails as busier.

A321 is not officially ordered yet. CEO Anžur told for media that Adria do not have enough routes with so many pax to fill A321 during winter time. I believe that A321 will be (wet)leased during summer 2016.

DeleteNo there is no chance... They can't fill A320s in most of their destinations, led alone A321. LF was 93 in this period where it should be 100... During most of the year LF is around 60. Belive me there is no need for A321 in this company... And I can't wait to see the LF on the A330 if it comes...
DeleteIdnas, why Spain over Italy? Italy is neighbouring country and the connections are abismal. No train, no plane. There is a whole bunch of Slovenes travelling to Sicily, Sardegna, Rome, Florence in spring, summer..It is almost like they are not interested at all.
DeleteLike you said Italy isneighbouring country and many Slovenes go there by car (northern Italy) or by charter fligths to the southern Italy (not necesarry from LJU), or you just take train on the border (Trieste, Gorica/Goriza). Years ago we had LJU - Rome flights, which weren't successful. On the other hand Spain is too far to go there by car, so flights are only option to go there. We have charters to Spain now, but no scheduled flights to Barcelona or Madrid.

DeleteAlso, you can fly to anywhere in Italy domestically from TRS and VCE/TSF, the ticket prices are usually low, TRS is 1h from Ljubljana by car, VCE/TSF around 2,5h.

DeleteIn the first seven months of 2015 Air Serbia lost 20% passengers on SKP route compared to 2014. Down some 6.500 PAX. But they send ATR most of the time and LF is really good. It seems that Air Serbia won't have much success in Skopje in the future.

Delete@9:49 - Well, first there is a number of night destinations that are gonna feed it and which are much more important than Ex-Yu which is Beirut and Tel Aviv. Those two cities alone provide double the feed than all Ex-Yu combined (excluding BEG). Secondly, Bucharest is becoming a night flight and i expect the same to happen to Istanbul and other regional destinations.
