Zagreb Airport is preparing for a busy winter season, which will see it handle more flights than ever before, following on from what is set to be a record summer. A number of carriers have already committed to increasing both frequencies and capacity to the Croatian capital when compared to last winter, with El Al Israel Airlines recently announcing it will extend its seasonal summer flight programme between Tel Aviv and Zagreb by a month, until the end of November. Services will be maintained once per week. Furthermore, as previously reported, Croatia Airlines has upgraded its seasonal flights to Barcelona and Lisbon to year-round operations, while Qatar Airways is expected to uphold its two daily service throughout the winter, up from last year's ten weekly flights.
Carriers that will be operating to Zagreb Airport this year, but were not present last winter, include Emirates, with a five weekly service from Dubai, Monarch Airlines, with services from London Gatwick and Manchester, as well as Norwegian Air Shuttle, which will maintain its recently launched flights from Stockholm to Zagreb throughout the winter. Furthermore, Lufthansa's low cost unit Eurowings will add its fourth destination to the Croatian capital, from Dusseldorf, starting October 31. Sales for the new route have been encouraging, resulting in the airline's decision to run the service three times per week instead of two, as initially scheduled. Monarch Airlines recently said its decision to extend its seasonal flights to Zagreb over the winter was down to strong loads and bookings over the summer months. "The summer flights and city breaks to Croatia have been selling well and we are always looking for new routes that we can offer all year round, so we are happy to be adding Zagreb as another city break to our winter programme”, Monarch's Chief Commercial Officer, Ian Chambers, said.
Elsewhere, LOT Polish Airlines will increase frequencies on its Zagreb flights over the winter. The airline will maintain eight instead of six weekly services from Warsaw, all of which will be run by its 82-seat Embraer E175 aircraft. Furthermore, ČSA Czech Airlines will add an extra weekly flight from Prague over the winter for a total of three with its ATR 72. At this point, the carrier has not scheduled a stop-in-service during the slow month of February, as was the case this year. Czech Airlines recently said that more than a third of travellers who began their journey in Zagreb continued on from Prague towards other destinations served by the carrier and its partners.
Zagreb Airport is targeting passenger growth of 8% in 2017, although it is expected to surpass this figure. During the first half of 2017 it handled 1.335.942 passengers, up 9% on last year. Recently, its General Manager, Jacques Feron, said that attracting new airlines was one of the management's key goals which will, in turn, transform the airport into a true hub. "An airport such as Zagreb cannot decide to become a hub on its own. It is airlines which make the airport a hub. At our concessionaire level, we shall accompany the airlines, and especially Croatia Airlines, in their strategies by being efficient and flexible". Mr Feron said.
wow impressive. Well done Zagreb
ReplyDeleteHow is Emirates doing?
ReplyDeleteReally good ... after 1 month of flying, they announced they would cut 2 services per week over the winter. With Qatar announcing double daily flights, my bet is that they will further reduce their winter services - too much capacity without the convenience of frequency
DeleteEK does ok in terms of loads, yields not so much. They should fly seasonally as there aren't enough passengers during the slow winter months.
DeleteMy aunt decided to fly from Australia with Singapore Airlines to Zagreb. Both Qatar and Emirates were way to expensive (2400$). It probably means that the loads are quite high.
DeleteTickets in Western markets are always, higher than here in.ex YU so it's nothing strange.
DeleteAlso I think it has more to.do.with good performance of their SYD flights
I think they are doing much better than expected in first and business class.
Delete^ yes! And that is where it counts.
DeleteCounts what exactly? Again, if performmance is better than expected, why decrease ops vs original plan? I am not nasty towards EK; couldn't care less, but come on guys, pure logic...
Delete"@Anon 9:07 AM

Good, it is good nobody cares what you think.
if you don't care, then why comment ? You have undermined your own argument ! Aren't you a smart one ....
DeleteAnon 9:07 simply applies logic. Whether you like that or not.
Delete@AnonymousJuly 28, 2017 at 11:21 PM
DeleteHe is applying nothing but his stupidity, the guy is a nationalist troll and everyone can read between the lines.
He is jealous emirates is flying to Zagreb and want's to Emirates fail in Zagreb. Well it won't, they're doing a fantastic job, Winter was always expected to be reduced, they do that on most destinations across their network, Zagreb isn't exception.
Emirates projected 80-85000 pax on the route this year, 160-175 000 pax in 2018 for entire year, it seems now, they'll have 85000 by the end of September and 200 000 pax in 2018. Massive increase on their projections.
Zagreb is developing just nicely. new Legacy Carriers are coming in first, just like in major West European airports, and LCCs are picking the destinations now covered by legacy carriers.
No need to rush things in Zagreb, get a stable and solid growth based on legacy carriers and service, build a proper airport.
Good to see Croatia Airlines extending Lisbon and Barcelona. Do they have to lease an additional plane over winter?
ReplyDeleteI think they have an A319 stored during the winter so they can use that one.
DeleteOslo and Stockholm are selling really well, so that is also likely to be extended in to winter months. No idea how Helsinki is doing, last thing I heard, it was doing rather well for OU.
DeleteOU's load factor overall is around 72%, if they can push it to 75% would be really nice.
I read somewhwre that Heksinki doing verry good, and that tickets for Helsinki are quite expensive. So Scandinavia is really good move for them. But how is Buckhurest doing?
DeleteCongratulations
ReplyDeleteI still can't believe OU will be reducing LHR this winter, they were the most convenient option with the best service.
ReplyDeleteAlso DUS is such a,missed opportunity for the carrier. They could have run daily flights with the Q400
They are reducing LHR because they sold the slots.
DeleteI know but it's still a shame, LON is a massive market with lots of potential
DeleteI agree with the first anon completely. While it is good to see Eurowings launching winter flights, I think Croatia Airlines really missed an opportunity at serving more German cities. There is definitely potential and a market there.
DeleteDoes OU fly to TXL and STR?
Delete^No. They did to both once upon a time.
DeleteWill they keep PRN this winter or are they continuing to operate it seasonally only?
DeleteHow on earth did they manage to fail in Berlin?!?
Delete@9.36. No, it is seasonal since last year.
Delete@9.40 I don't know but it was a very long time ago.
DeleteJP also failed in Berlin so I guess the market is not that big.
DeleteAnd Eurowings failed on Berlin-Sarajevo flights too.
DeleteSo only Air Serbia flies to Berlin in ex-yu?
DeleteThere is also easyjet flight from Berlin to Pristina.
DeleteAnd Ryan to Niš
DeleteEurowings flies Berlin-Zagreb all year long.
Delete@Anon 9:11 AM
DeleteThey're not reducing London, they're reducing LHR, LGW is still on for extra flights.
Once 3rd Runway @LHR is finished they'll get new slots @LHR this is if the UK remains in the EU. Dublin should be priority for OU, 20 000 Croats live in Ireland. 80 000 Irish visit Croatia, good enough reason for direct service to Zagreb.
Third runway at Heathrow won't be finished until at least 2025 (best case scenario).
DeleteGreat news ZAG. I think 3.1 million passengers will be achieved this year.
ReplyDeleteEven 3.2 is very possible.
DeleteStill no Wizz or Ryan ....
ReplyDeleteZAG needs more LCCs
It will get Transavia and Volotea next year.
DeleteEasyjet is also rumored to be coming back next year.
DeleteAre Transavia and Volotea confirmed or is it yet another baseless rumour?
DeleteIt is confirmed that they are negotiating.
DeleteNegotiating, key word. I'll believe it when I see it. Withthis growth I doubt ZAG is too willing to lower it's charges
DeleteIf the demand is there and money can be made, airlines will overlook the charges. Look at Wizz at BEG. They complain about fees and BEG being most expensive in their network but they keep growing out of there.
Delete+1 last anon
DeleteAnon 9:26 AM
DeleteThis blog reported it, few months ago, and EasyJet coming too as well.
Still wondering why DUB is not connected to ZAG?
ReplyDeleteOtherwise, Gulf carriers will probably reduce the prices dramatically in winter. Having 2 daily DOH and 1 to DXB is madness.
Don't forget TK that's after the same market.
DeleteEK won't be daily during the winter, it goes to 5 p/w.
DeleteAgree about DUB. Maybe they can try to get Aer Lingus to fly this route.
EK's big aircraft is almost the same (capacity wise) as 3 small airbus aircraft... so you will in effect almost have the equivalent of 5 small airbus flying the route.
DeleteYes, madness - but great for us consumers !! Bring on the price war
EK has to develop the cargo market. It's the only carrier/aircraft in this ex-yu market. Cargo can generate good revenues.
DeleteWhat do you mean only aircraft in ex-Yu market? Air Serbia's A330 carries a lot of cargo.
Delete@Anon 10:38 AM
DeleteZagreb is on EK and QRs cargo run, there's currently weekly cargo flights by Qatar and Cargo with EK starts in August with daily flights, EK projects 1600 Tons of air cargo between Zagreb and Dubai. Qatar has similar projections.
EK is doing fine on Zagreb route, 80% LF rate atm.
How is 80% LF good at the very peak of the summer season?
DeleteRegarding competition, how is it not good?
Delete@Anon @ 5:07 PM
Delete85% lf to Zagreb, 75% LF to Dubai, that is excellent result only after 50 days of flying to Zagreb.
Zagreb is year round destination, summer season or not. December is just as busy as July or August when it comes to tourist. Even first two weeks of January are very busy cause of ski-slalom and giant slalom world cup races held in Zagreb each year. A
I am not worried for EK at all, they're doing fine, with cargo they'll start to fly from August 1st and first and business class selling 50-70%, EK is making a killing on the route. EK's own estimates for first 7 moths of operations to Zagreb were 85000.
In first June and July will see around 37000 pax on the route. At this rate, if they keep up lf till the end of September, they'll hit their target, 3 months ahead of what they projected.
In 2018, EK route Dubai - Zagreb - Dubai - is poised to hit 200 000 pax. EK projections for 2018 are 175000. This means they're projecting they'll make good profit with 175 000 or 85000 pax this year.
You should relax, EK knows what they're doing, they're big airline, with good reputation for a reason.
Nice to see. I think winter will be very strong.
ReplyDeleteWinter is coming !!!
DeleteI hope Croatia Airlines crew don't go on strike, but people are saying it will happen in the next week or two, It could impact Zagreb's numbers :/
ReplyDeleteHopefully they wetlease some planes to minimize cancellations.
Delete@Adria can jump in
DeleteHope they won't go on strike!
DeleteVery good news, it seems that ZAG is on the right track. All it needs is a low cost airline to open a base.
ReplyDeleteWhy?so that it can finish off what's left of OU?
DeleteZAG management won't make any moves that could hurt OU. Besides, if you read between the lines, the CEOs statement in the last paragraph pretty much says that.
DeleteIf ZAG attracted an LCC to open a base numbers would boom straight away.
DeleteAgree. We need more LCC at Zagreb but the airport is going in a good direction.
Delete@Anon at 10:56 AM
DeleteIndeed, no need to rush things, Voltea, Tranavia and EasyJet are coming next year, Norwegian will most likely expand their operations next year too and I think Vueling and Air Europa might start more regular service to Zagreb as well. Monarch is connecting Zagreb with Manchester and London and might add Birmingham and Edinburgh next year.
I think when it comes to LCCs, that is it, no need for Wizz or Ryan. Concentrate on getting good coverage with Legacy carriers and great seasonal service by other carriers.
Zagreb will do fine.
BTW Sofia will hit 7 million this year. Mostly cause of LCCs.
Actually Sofia will hit seven million mostly because of the ongoing feud between FR and W6
Deleteexcellent news coming in from Zagreb this year. Any more surprises/new airlines we might see this year?
ReplyDeleteI think that is it for this year.
DeleteGrowth in July is apparently around 16%.
ReplyDeleteNice!
DeleteWith the new terminal they still have a lot of work to do. Primarily bring down delays and service aircraft probably. Yesterday a vehicle collided with an OU plane.
ReplyDeleteThey are obviously understaffed.
DeleteI wish Croatia Airlines kept some of the routes it launched this year.
ReplyDeleteThey would need to expand their fleet over the winter for that to happen.
DeleteWhen will OU get a new CEO?
DeleteHopefully soon!
DeleteWish them good luck! I'm sure it will be more than 3 milion pax this year!
ReplyDeleteThat is certain.
DeleteI think there are a few more European airlines that could start flights to Zagreb. Primarily SAS, Aegean and maybe Alitalia if they are still around.
ReplyDeleteIberia should go year round
DeleteIberia is cautious. If they perform well this year they will probably go year round from next year.
DeleteToday A321 to MAD, so it seems the spanish market is developping very well in ZAG.
Delete(In SPU and DBV is also a good performance to MAD/BCN.)
Nice :)
DeleteMy prediction is about 10% growth this year.
ReplyDeleteYep, seems most realistic in my opinion.
DeleteAgreed. It's already gone up to 9% in the first 6 months and that's before the peak Summer season ý
DeleteBtw...10% increase will mean 3,07 million passengers this year. Which is very realistic. If the airport reaches 3,1 million pax as many are predicting, that would be a growth of around 11%. Very nice compared to 6,7% last year.
DeleteI like that they are proactively trying to attract new airlines.
ReplyDeleteSo much for increased fees at the airport having an impact...
ReplyDeleteMuch better than last winter which was a bit of a dud.
ReplyDeleteIn terms of growth, yes.
DeleteHopefully there will finally be direct flights to the US next year.
ReplyDeleteDude, those were rumors, just like QR sending its Dreamliner to ZAG.
DeleteI understand that but it was reported here a few times too that the management wants a link to New York. From what I gathered this will be a seasonal 1 weekly flight operated by an EU-based airline (probably some leisure carrier).
Delete@Anonymous 10:43 don't forget EK sending A380 on inaugural flight.
DeleteNo one said so. They will sent A380 after several months in slow months to make "media rape" so to "force" media to write about them.
DeleteYes, they most certainly did. They said an A380 would come with all Croatian crew. Your 'prediction' is even more bizzare.
DeleteZagreb airport can't handle an A380.
DeleteIt actually can.
DeleteImagine boarding around 500 passengers with one jet bridge.
Delete@AnonymousJuly 28, 2017 at 5:20 PM
DeleteZagreb airport is the only airport in the ex-YU region that can. A380 can park on all other major airports in the region, and land if runway is 3000m long, however to connect directly with the passenger terminal, only possible @ Zagreb.
It can connect at Belgrade too, using C gates.
DeleteBut none of the airports can serve it effectively, because they don't have catering vehicles to reach second deck, also to board second deck via stairs inside is crazy. But anyway I believe that Zagreb will be the first in ex-YU to get an A380 flight.
@Anon at 6:14 PM
DeleteShow me, use google earth, point c gate, i am looking at the airport now, can't see how this is possible. Box is too Narrow, max BG can host is A330-300 or B777 200. 60-63m.
A 380 is 73.7m. As to catering, Emirates does catering only in Dubai. Paris, Amsterdam, Frankfurt and London.
Max BEG can handle B777? Are you serious? BEG handles cargo B747 on a regular basis. Last week Chinese officials came in an Air China B747 to Belgrade. Please don't comment on stuff you have no clue on.
DeleteIt handles large aircraft on its gate C6.
http://i.imgur.com/X01d14O.png
Also worth noting is that BEG handled scheduled B747 Qantas flights from the late 70s until the break up of Yugoslavia.
Delete@Anon at 6:35 PM
DeleteThat is a platform not a terminal, you can park An-225 there, let alone A380, we're talking connecting the plane to the terminal so passengers can deplane through passenger boarding bridges.
Air China was parked on that platform too.
Look at google earth and measure things for yourself, look at the size of the box.
Oh jeez. So you have never been to Belgrade Airport but are presenting yourself as an expert. I can't draw it for you. The very last gate C6 has 2 air bridges which connect onto a plane. You can see the building very well. C6 is used as it gives enough space for heavy aircraft to park and connect to the gates. And no, Air China parked on the very far end of the platform where all aircraft from foreign dignitries are parked. Cargo planes are not parked here. They use the B platform opposite the terminal.
DeleteStop being a smart arse if you don't know what you are talking about.
http://i.imgur.com/xfHCDR3.jpg
If you look at google earth or google maps, you can se that Air Serbia A330 is parked diagonally, so this way you could park much larger aircraft.
DeleteAlso your statement that Emirates only does catering in those cities is false.
Deletehttps://www.dus.com/~/media/fdg/dus_com/konzern/presse/medien%20informationen%20englisch/düsseldorf_airport_to_become_airport_for_the_a380.pdf - on the last page you can see that Dusseldorf airport has bought catering vehicles for A380
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1PWDMu29V0w&t=90s - video of Emirates A380 turnaround at Manchester airport, you can clearly see catering vehicles
- ZAG can handle the A380, however under certain restrictions.
Delete-ZAG is still having problems handling the B77W, loading and unloading cargo and as well as servicing the aircraft ie cleaning. The A380 would just increase the problem.
- EK caters from almost all destinations except for the shorter flights, a couple African destinations and ZAG due to a lack of a proper catering facility. Nothing to do with aircraft type, rather the facilities, or lack of facilities and quality of catering. Same as with QR who doesnt cater in ZAG but DOH. FZ doesnt cater in BEG rather from DXB, with return catering loaded in the cargo and JU Catering just swaps the carts around during ground time. QR wasnt taking on catering previously in BEG either, being catered in SOF for the SOF-BEG-SOF sector and again for the SOF-DOH sector.
- A380's are boarded at some airports via remote stand on a regular basis.
- BEG can take on all types (i think just not the A380). However, difference in ZAG is that in ZAG the gates are not closed as is the case in BEG.
@ anonymous 6,27pm
you obviously havnt seen the amount of catering that gets uplifted to an aircraft before. You will be surprised.
@ anonymous 6,52pm
widebodies in BEG use just one bridge not 2, which is connected at L2. I thought the same before but its not the case, and there are a few pictures around that show this.
@JATBEGMEL, while it is true that Air Serbia's A330 uses only one airbridge (because boarding can easily be done with 1), 2 can be used if needed. On several occasions, including inaugural flight, 2 gates were used to board the A330.
DeleteThe C gates are designed in such a way that two gates can be used when a widebody lands. People seem to have forgotten that this was the scenario when QR and TK sent their A330s.
DeleteThe only reason they don't do it for JFK is because it departs during the busy period when they need all the gates they can get.
Amazing ZAG. Great for the Croatian economy too. Bravo Hrvatska
ReplyDeleteOT: today was an UPS 767 service CGN-LJU (Star Air 767-200 OY-SRH).
ReplyDeleteIs this just one-time service?
They regularly use 757, so that is not so big upgrade
DeleteDHL uses B757, TNT B737, UPS Atr...so, todays' upgrade is quite big.
DeleteIt's going to be quite a year in Zagreb.
ReplyDeleteBravo Hrvatska!
ReplyDeleteYou are a bit late. I was worried.
DeleteGreat about El Al. I think they cohld fly 1 flight per week all winter.
ReplyDeleteI thought they are going year round but like the article says it's only an extension until the end of November. Pitty.
DeleteNapredak ZAG u ovoj godini svakako jeste za pohvalu. Deluje da će biti i jaka zima. Čestitke.
ReplyDeleteGood results for ZAG. I'm a bit surprised that aircraft movements are still down compared to last year. How?
ReplyDeleteAirlines sending bigger capacity planes?
DeleteIt actually means that the overall result is even better for ZAG because passenger numbers are up.
DeleteAfter a strong summer comes a strong winter ;)
ReplyDeleteMore direct lines are needed to attract people from long distance destinations.
ReplyDeleteGreat developments for Zagreb since the French came
ReplyDeleteZagreb is doing good but I am worried about some serious issues: recent redirection of flight to Rome, guy running out onto tarmac to catch his flight, delays on busy days because of lack of staff and incident from few days ago when car hit into plane. This is all the fault of concessionaire. Can the government do sonething about it?
ReplyDelete@Anon at 3:41 PM
DeleteWhat exactly should government do for minor infractions ? They've fined the airport, and individual in question already passed passport control, the security control, he was bit late that is all, no laws broken other than stupidity. Hardly a crime these days, if it was a crime, Trump would serve a life in prison.
Hitting planes isn't unusual, happens a lot on all airports. Ground crew was careless. Airport normally covers the costs of such damage through insurance.
He was a bit late? Are you serious?!? On what planet do you live when you think a passenger can casually walk onto the apron to look for his flight? This is a strech even for you as the eternal Zagreb Airport policeman on here.
DeleteNext time you are at any other airport in the world and you are a bit late, try to take a stroll on the tarmac to search for your plane and see what happens. Crazy.
Delete@Anon at 5:15
DeleteYes fella was bit stupid, indeed should face a fine or something, shit happens. He passed security screen, his baggage was on the plane already, he was giving a lift by airport staff as he was too late for the airport neoplan bus, airplane was informed and they waited for him. He was only 2-3 min late and they let him board. Moving on.
Also don't always believe shit you read on index or tportal !!!
He didn't brake any laws other than force airline to wait for him 2-3 min. Police didn't charge him, arrest him or question him, why??? Cause airport handled stuff the right way, allowed poor fella to board the plane he was late.
Story of him running across tarmac is nonsense, he didn't do such thing.
* Was given a lift by airport staff.
DeletePurger wrote an article about this, you should read it.
Deletehttps://tangosix.rs/2017/11/07/kolumna-alena-scurica-koliko-je-sigurna-zracna-luka-zagreb/
Wait, his luggage was on the plane but he wasn't? That's another security breach and that's actually illegal.
DeleteHe was late
DeleteGate was closed, no one was on gate any more. No one inform captain that he will be late on flight - that is not true.
His luggage was taking out of plane because he was not on it
He push emergency button, walk on apron and try to find plane, but he did not know which one was it
Than he recognize his luggage on trolley, and stop driver and ask him to drive him and his luggage to plane.
Driver did so.
Captain and agent allow him to board plane.
Crazy!
They clearly are understaffed, like many people on here have noticed. Delays have become a norm, even before the summer season had kicked off and now it's even worse, when that never used to be a problem at the old, much smaller terminal. There still is no proper offer in terms of restaurants, caffes, shops and similar facilities, the hotel hasn't been built yet. Anyhow...there's still much to do before they start bringing up the apron extension. Even though there should be more than just 12 gates. I imagine the situation on Mondays and Wednesdays, when there's two wide body aircraft at the airport at the same time, must be rather chaotic.
DeleteBuilding looks beautiful on that shot.
ReplyDeleteYou just wait when they expand the airport to full size.
Deletehttps://i0.wp.com/hajdasdoncic.hr/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/radovi-faze-2.png?w=562
I think I saw google earth rendering of what the terminal will look like, but forgot where, not if it was this blog, or some aviation forum. I am sure if you google it you'll find it.
