The City of Novi Sad in northern Serbia is expected to adopt a plan tomorrow outlining the development of its own airport at the site of the current sports and agriculture field in the village of Čenej, which features a grass runway. The plan foresees the construction of a "modern airport that will fulfil necessary requirements for the conduct of commercial air traffic". The plan further states that the airport would cater for scheduled flights, low cost carriers, charters and air taxi services. The development of Novi Sad's Airport has been discussed for over a decade. The city itself, which is the capital of the country's northern province of Vojvodina, is located just over ninety kilometres north of Belgrade. Serbia currently boasts two so-called "ghost airports"- in Užice and Kraljevo - with new terminal buildings but no commercial flights.

DeleteWaste of time and money. Novi Sad is basically a suburb of Belgrade.
ReplyDeleteNovi Sad is the fastest growing city in Serbia, if not in all EX-YU when it comes to the population. If there is a city in the Balkans that could sustain one small airport, it is Novi Sad. Still, I am against this decision.

ReplyDeleteThis is just great news!! It's good to see INI made such an important impact on the rest of airports. The success will be huge and southern Hungarians can enjoy low fares.

ReplyDeleteThere are so many things that are more important right now to Novi Sad then a case study that will, in the end, say nothing, that it is just not mature to spend money for this goal.
ReplyDeleteC'mon Novi Sad, case study for extension of Bulevar Evrope over Danube, case study and Feasibility study for Wastewater treatment plant and waste management, case study for new bridge/junction/highway behind Toll station Novi Sad Jug that will continue over Danube and connect with extension/bridge from Bulevar Evrope, new underground garages with at least 500 spots each, complete electrification of public transportation, tram from Futog to Petrovaradin.
And then, ONLY then, Novi Sad should think about airport.
But in general, not so bad idea when we see how many small airports exists and work all over Europe. Novi Sad COULD, but only potentially COULD be Panonain base of Ryanair where Ryanair could easily shift most of the service from BUD one day in the future.
Think about it...with new high speed railway, Novi Sad will be only 2 hours from Budapest and 30 minutes from Belgrade. It is 2 hours by car form Timisoara. So, catchment area exists.
Only question is...can this airport work tear-around or it would be "EXIT festival airport" where we would have 300 aircraft movements in 4 days and after that deserted runway with maybe 2 daily flights to some diaspora city.
Hungary is already facing high competition from Croatia and now from Serbia.

Just time to get a proper, international IATA code.
