Skopje Airport has recorded a remarkable 64 months of consecutive passenger growth, with its figures continuously increasing since January 2014, when it was affected by adverse weather conditions, forcing its closure on several occasions. During the first five months of this year, Skopje Airport handled 844.214 travellers, representing an increase of 7.6%. According to the State Statistical Office, it added an extra 59.868 passengers on 2018. Over the same period, the airport recorded 7.096 aircraft movements, an improvement of 3.5%. Skopje processed 1.636 tonnes of freight and mail, up 50.5%. Since the start of the year, Wizz Air introduced two new services from the Macedonian capital, to Baden Baden and Bremen, with a further two, Turku and Larnaca, to launch towards the end of next month.

It was followed by Turkish Airlines with a 7.2% share, Austrian Airlines with 5.1%, Chair Airlines (formerly known as Germania Flug) with 4.5%, Pegasus Airlines with a 3.1% share and Edelweiss Air and Croatia Airlines with a joint 2.8% share of all passengers handled. Istanbul continues to be the most popular destination, with 10.3% of all passengers either arriving or departing from the city's two airports. It is followed by Zurich with a 7.3% share, Basel with 5.5%, Vienna with 5.2% and Wizz Air's Malmo and Bratislava routes with a 4.5% and 3.4% passenger share respectively.

Skopje Airport's existing connectivity

Jointly, Skopje and Ohrid airports handled 914.759 travellers during the January - May period, representing an increase of 11%. "The number of passengers is continuously increasing as a result of the dedicated work of the TAV Macedonia team, which strives to provide quality services in every segment of our operations. The continuous increase in the number of passengers served at Skopje International Airport and St Paul the Apostle in Ohrid during the first half of the year, as well as the upcoming new routes planned, gives us the right to be satisfied with our work and the results achieved", the General Manager of airport operator TAV Macedonia, Alper Ersoy, said. In addition to Wizz Air's two new services from Skopje, which are to be launched on July 24, the budget airline will also commence flights from Dortmund and Memmingen to Ohrid on July 2 and 26, while Eurowings will inaugurate services between Stuttgart and Ohrid this Monday, followed by Dusseldorf - Ohrid on July 17.

This is beyond impressive. Could we expect SKP to become number 2 airport in ex-YU in H1?

    January - May

    ZAG: 886.119
    SKP: 842.737

    It's a difference of just 43.382 passengers.

SKP will have a great chance to overtake PRN this year. Especially since W6 said recently they have no plans to open a base in PRN any time soon.

reduce ZAG's numbers by the transit pax that are counted twice you come very close to the SKP&PRN numbers :)

Agree ZAG numbers are weak compared to the market potential but just to remind you that both SKP and BEG (another 2 out of 3 we talk about here) have large presence of LCC 's which make numbers boom, and ZAG is the only one not having it. However, as we could have read here few days ago, ZAG is in talks with several LCC' s and if that talks are completed successfully, which I expect will happen, there is no chance for SKP, PRN, LJU, SPU or DBV to overtake from ZAG number two in EX-YU, in term of numbers. I am almost 100% sure that BEG as number 1 and ZAG as number 2 in ex-yu will be unchanged situation for long long time to come.

Omg, is this genine pax guy? Transit passengers are counted twice bcs they pay for airport service twice. Also, they on average spend more time in the airport and spend more money on food, drinks and duty free stuff. Believe me, transit passengers are more worthy than gastos passengers Skopje serves.

    But important, primary ones missing:
    FRA, MUC, STR, DUS, TXL.
    Additionally LEJ, KSF/PAD...

Rest of Europe, lots of homework for TAV:
CDG, LHR, PRG, MAD, TGD, SKG, TLV and JFK or YYZ outsideof Europe.
