Operator Fraport Slovenija has released visuals of Ljubljana Jože Pučnik Airport's new passenger terminal. Following preparatory work, which began some two weeks ago, a groundbreaking ceremony last Thursday marked the formal start of construction. The facility will be a spacious fusion of concrete, wood and glass, reflecting the nearby Kamnik-Savinja Alps. It will have a lot of natural light and blend in with its environment, the Plan B architecture firm, which designed the building, said. The German-owned operator will supervise and manage the investment with a team of ten engineers. Apart from the expansion, the operator also plans to modernise the airport's logistics and IT. Fraport Slovenija is currently undertaking a long-term investment cycle amounting to over forty million euros.
Looks very Scandinavian to me for some reason. Good luck LJU.

Joke to side and at my expense, it's a very simple design, though suprising that they combine the edgy industrial look with some soft retro lines inside and on top of that go on the environmental note.
Probably as a reflection of the nature surrounding the airport and represented in the country, beside striving to follow the trend.
And the soft retro as it's known in our old Yugo architecture too, beside the edgy industrial.
I would though either have designed it all edgy or soft retro, this is a bit like selection from 2 ideas put together or wanting it all. Sometimes less is more.
Technically, Slovenia is considered Sweden of the Balkans. I am not surprised that the terminal looks like this...

DeleteThis reminds me a lot like Sarajevo. The security and the check-in is very similar. Not in anyway of how it looks but the concept in a way.

ReplyDeleteOnly negative point is that no add jet bridges will be built and that gate 1,2 will be too much of unnecessary walking distance
There will be one new air bridge and two new ground gates, with one existing ground gate removed due to a new staircase.

DeleteOne comment few weeks ago said no add jetbridges will be built and since admin never mentioned one extra will be built, status for me is that nothing will be built. Maybe admin can check and cfm. Tx

Delete4 air bridges will be added eventually when they expand the terminal, eventually the terminal will have total of 8 air bridges and capacity of around 5.5 million. Current design is simple upgrade on existing terminal doubling the size of terminal to around 25-30000 sqm total area.
In Slovenia eventually means 25 years... but lets see. Hope dies last. Thank yu for yr update

ReplyDeleteProbably the cheaper construction cost was the main consideration instead of some more modern and distinct design which obviously would cost more.
Is it really needed? Apart from peak time and during some summer charters schedules the old terminal is not looking that busy or crowded ...

I am Gorenc and you didn’t nail it. Airport was reconstructed before presidency in ‘08 and Gorenjci are really not an issue when it comes to development. Take you unfounded bias somewhere else.
DeleteOn the same note; what do Gorenjci have with financial founding of the new terminal? Two municipalities that airport lies in (Cerklje anc Šenčur) we’re always proactive when it comes to airport. If they weren’t, new bypass would probably not be build. Meaning new storages wouldnt be builld. Small shareholders rejected the old plan for new terminal before the sale to Fraport, not Gorenjci, Šenčurjani or Cerkljani for that matter. In your simplistic logic; nongorenjci voted against new terminal.
DeleteMy mother lives and is born in Kranj and lived part of her live there and its not just the airport, its plenty of things which are outdated and if u speak to the people there abount necessary investments, majority responds, sej ni treba, se je dober tko ke je. Typical mentality. Look at Bled and Kranjska gora, look at Bus station Kranj, look at road to Planica, look at yr cable cars. Slovenia in general could hve done much more to attract tourism. 2 years ago I visited Lipica. The hall where there is a horse riding show is so outdated and ugly. Lipica is one of yr best tourist attractions. Look at the missing highway part to connect HR highway in Istria or your train network. And instead of fighting about Piran bay with HR u could hve built missing highway part to Rijeka which is not just of benefit for HR and their tourists but also for Slovenians and entire regional progress and it wld probably also hve calmed down tensions with yr neighbour. Again SLO is 15 years in EU and could hve got 100 mios of subventions if projects would hve been raised up. There I critize SLO as it is very strange that even MNE has a better hotel infrastructure than EU member SLO, not to talk of HR who has done a fantastic job in the past 15 years.
DeleteWhat's with the Balkans and this obsession with the tourist industry? It's not a sustainable path to economic development. Giving top investment priority to tourism infrastructure outside of remote rural areas is just bonkers IMO. Funding in Slovenia being limited as it is, I'd much rather see more investment in housing, public transportation and providing a good base for high value-added industries. The tourist industry has some of the worst wages and working conditions in the country, do we really want to promote this over other industries?
DeleteNot that it couldn't be better; it sure could and an airport upgrade is sorely needed for both business and tourism but this dick measuring contest over who has how many luxury hotels is just sad.
Tourism is one sector, other sector is for example traffic. Austro Hungarians built LJU tramways, communists were dump enough to remove it again. Now look at traffic mess in Ljubljana, no trams, no metro system incl S Bahn. The old obala street fm Koper to Izola could hve been upgraded to attractive beach and outdoor activity area, highway to CRO Istra Border stops in Koper, many roads in SLO are in very questionable conditions. SLO is not an FDI friendly nation at all, eventhough situation slightly improved recently. To much mountain wall mentality, where people tend to steer to the wall instead of climbing up and have a greater perspective view
DeleteLjubljana central bus station is a real nightmare. Perfect choice for movies showing the poverty of post war countries. Derelict, poor infrastructure, not comfortable at all. No other capital in Europe has a central bus station which is worse. Unbelievable. Slovenians are quite obsessed with infrastructure, they have access to Eu funds many years already... can't get it why they don't improve it in so many years. I guess no one who is responsible for it cares. You can't have a good first impression of Slovenia if you travel from abroad straight there.

DeleteLike the design both interior and exterior! Nothing too fancy and over-sized but looks quite practical and modular. I mean - I'd love to see something super fancy ala Zagreb Airport, but if not that - this is what I'd like to see.
ReplyDeleteDesign wise it's right there with latest trends - stripped down and industrial. Quite timeless and I see it aging well. And contrary to what some might say - this is far from the cheapest way to build!
Funny, today I flew out of LJU after many, many years. And just today this gets published :D wishing LJU all the best, this is long overdue. The current terminal is TINY!
ReplyDeleteAs to the previous commenters, some are right, much infrastructure is outdated, the mentality of the people is sometimes not great (eg it's fine the way it is, we don't need better), so let's hope things will slowly improve.
But the guy who claims MNE's infrastructure is better, he's probably living in a paralel universe :D

U probl never hve been to the Regent Porto Montenegro, Chedi im the Lustica Resort, Dukley Resort or the Aman Sveti Stefan. If Slovenia would have just a Marina like Porto Montenegro is. And btw all Slovenia has on luxury hotels on the coast is the Kempinski in Portoroz. Bled their other tourist spot has not one INTERNATIONAL standard 5 star hotel. Quite a poor tourism infrastructure

What about Ljubljana's hotel Intercontinental, built by serbian company Delta?
