Adria Airways has announced it has officially filed for bankruptcy, ending 58 years of service. In a statement, the company said, "On Monday, September 30, 2019, Adria Airways filed a motion for bankruptcy proceedings of the company at the Kranj District Court. Bankruptcy proceedings were initiated by the management of the company because of the company’s insolvency and based on the Slovenian Financial Operations, Insolvency Proceedings, and Compulsory Dissolution Act (ZFPPIPP) which obligates the management of a company in the position of Adria Airways to file for bankruptcy proceedings of the company. The court has a three-day statutory period within which it shall decide on the opening of bankruptcy proceedings. The company announces that it will cancel all scheduled flights due to initiation of bankruptcy proceedings".

Adria Airways: 1961 - 2019

The Slovenian Minister for Economic Development and Technology, Zdravko Počivalšek, said the government was considering establishing a new national carrier to improve Slovenia’s international connectivity after Adria’s collapse. However, he noted this process would take some time and would require a firm partnership with Lufthansa, as well as political consensus in the country. Over the past week, Adria has cancelled more than 400 flights affecting over 15.000 passengers. The company's demise sees 558 employees left without jobs. Adria Airways operated the last revenue flight with its own aircraft and crew from Copenhagen to Ljubljana on September 23. Its overall final service was a charter from Paris to Ljubljana on September 30, carrying Slovenia's men's Volleyball team, who had just become runners-up at the European Championships.

Adria Airways was purchased by the Munich-based turnaround fund 4K Invest in 2016 for a mere 100.000 euros through its subsidiary AA International Holding. Under its motto “We fix it”, 4K Invest said in 2016, “Adria Airways will make good connections available for business customers and offer attractive ticket prices for tourists. It will continue to serve the markets of Slovenia, Albania, Kosovo and Macedonia, connecting these countries with the world through the Star Alliance network. We intend also to grow in Estonia, a new market the airline entered in November 2015”. However, since then, Adria left Estonia and its passenger numbers from Kosovo have seen a notable decline. Earlier this year, the fund said there was no room for growth in Slovenia due to the small size of the market. In 2017, AA International Holding acquired Etihad Airways’ upscale Swiss arm Etihad Regional. The investment proved futile and the company folded shortly after. The circumstances surrounding its collapse are still under investigation by Swiss authorities. Since Adria's bankruptcy announcement this afternoon, 4K Invest shut down its website.

Even though it was the most likely outcome I am still shocked by Adria's demise. My thoughts are with its hardworking and sincere staff, who've been sold out by utter charlatans.

First flight with you was back in 1987 fm LJU to DBV and my last one 2 weels ago ZRH to LJU.

My thoughts are with the 100s of employees, some of them have been working for decades there. Hopefully they all soon find a new job challenge

What a pity. Used to fly "Inex Adria Aviopromet" from MBX an LJU (assume it was holiday charters) to Dubrovnik and Greece. Was always much better than JAT. All the best for the employees!

What a disgrace for Slovenia. Even if symbolic, a national carrier represents one of the pillars of the statehood. I guess we do not deserve it. And all the talk how LH will help setting up a new airline...pure BS.

Nice to see words of compassion. It's going to be tough getting a new job since the market is becoming saturated with jobless pilots/cabin crew.

RIP Adria. Best of luck to its staff, may they all find new carriers in other airlines.
he Cypriot airline TUS also announced that it will stop flights and will re-brand and restructure. so it is eight European airlines that stopped operating this year.
The market is really tough for smaller airlines.

Sad thing but I hope that former JP workers will find new jobs soon as that is only thing that is importsint now. There is a lot of sentiment about JP here but if you put sentiment aside and try to be reasonable you realize that they were very troubled and poorly managed even in the exYu, just like our beloved JAT, and after 91 they were basically doomed. Small newly independent country with war going on nearby, with uncompetitive economy and ever shrinking markets. Government used it as an expensive nationalistic toy until money tap went dry in 2016 and all after that is just not worth mentioning any more.

To some extent you are right. However, Bratislava is 50km from VIE. Hungary had a national carrier that went bust. Budapest has 3m population and more easily attracts other carriers. Scandinavians have SAS. Slovenia, on the other hand, has no such thing...

This is what happens when you have 6 different airlines in the Balkans. I don't know why anyone hasn't thought of merging all the regional airlines and having one official regional carrier for the Balkans? Competition is getting even rougher and it's just a matter of time before another one in the region goes defunct.

What Slovenia has is the most developed economy and highest living standards of all the Exyu states. It will do just fine without a loss making national airline.

The best is that the Slovenian government will pay Lufty to fly to Ljubljana !!!

Maybe the government should pay the one hundred most prominent Germans to cry and pray for Slovenia and ist stupid politicians ???!

Smaller airlines are easier targets than one larger airline. Jat was far from perfect but it was top 10 airline in Europe at one point. If LOT was divided in 5-6 small airlines it would not have ability to survive against big players. While Adria was never part of Jat, any ideas about merging Ex Yu airlines in recent years did not get any political support. Big EU airlines are enjoying advantage of this divide and conquer scenario in Ex Yu markets.

@pozdrav iz Rijeke

Regarding yr reply to anon 1656h. The guy is right. There is just too much of capacity on the market and thats why even QR EK EY WY are suffering. EK had a sharp decrease in profits. QR WY EY fly big losses and are only thanks to Petro Dollars flying. WY has made over 0.5 bln USD losses last 3 years. It hurts very much to see airlines disappearing but it is the only way how others can grow more sustainable. A nation of 2 mio population can not afford an airline in todays market environment, it has no chance, especially not in our part of Europe where one airline covering the entire region cld might sustain but that will never happen due to known reasons

But why even have one "official" airline serving "the Balkans" -- seven diverse countries with different economic priorities, geopolitical orientations, and languages? In other words, why base a present-day project on a country that ceased to exist almost three decades ago?

Slovenes will just fly (more) from neighboring airports. As they have done, even when Adria (the LH feeder) was alive. Not that much will change, LJU will remain a small regional airport, with most links to Star hubs, and the other major capitals of Europe.
18:11

Wizz Air decides which countries to serve based on present-day market demand (and route subsidies), not the fact that certain countries were a part of another country 28 years ago. Besides, Wizz Air isn't any country's "official" carrier.

What unites LH Group airlines? They don't all speak German. They don't all belong to EU or NATO. They are not all in Central Europe. They were never part of the same country. ExYu countries still have way more in common than countries with LH Group airlines. However nationalism within Ex Yu is still much more powerful than business drivers.

Norwegian has a major cash shortage and it asked bondholders to bail it out- in the form of a two-year extension in repaying two bonds which total about $380 million. As collateral, Norwegian offered its landing slots at London's Gatwick Airport. The airline now has until November of 2021 and February of 2022 to pay.
Imho this is hardly possible since Norwegian does not earn any money, on the contrary, it burns a lot of it-meaning they can probably stay afloat until end of 2021 at the latest.

Your memory is not good at all. I was not suggested, but warned. Montenegro and Croatia negotiated with 4K and I was fighting against this idea. I hope you remember that from very first day I was writing that 4K is not good company.

Quote:

LH is not just about looking for opportunities, they seem to be about killing them as it fits them. Didn't LH had a lot of hate for all red/white painted airlines from Berlin (Interflug, Air Berlin)? Were they upset when Etihad invested in Air Serbia and Darwin? LH treats LOT more like an enemy within alliance, not an opportunity that should be supported.

What might be an opportunity for small Ex Yu countries to have a single airline that is larger, more resilient and profitable could be viewed as completely opposite interest for LH, even if they could have made money on such Ex Yu arline. LH is not just about profits, they also seem to be about strategic destruction of everyone else in CEE.

The guy is not right neither are JU. JAT and Adria during ex-yu were NOT badly managed. Your nick shows it the best as well as known fact they were first/among first to introduce ultramodern technology of those times, and flew to all continents transporting more people than all ex-yu companies today combined PROFITABLY. Then we have the "theses swap" : criminals who came later are now presented as consequence of what was happening before, and truth is opposite - it was good and well managed before, and then criminals, referred as market economy moguls came and ruined it for their own benefit. Regarding non-sustainable small 2 million market, I will say only two words : Air Baltic Best regards.

Just in case nobody noticed, 4K website is gone. Just like Adria's money. It's a shame the government didn't do ANYTHING to prevent these crooks from stealing all the money. Hell, they even sold the company to them.

Sorry, just noticed now that a lot of people noticed it :).

That would be a question for the government at the time....

Agree, I hope the government pays A LOT of money to these airlines. Why would you bother flying pax to LJU if you can earn money by flying an empty aircraft.

R. I. P. Adria, who'll be next? All ex-yu airlines will be under the Eurowings logo and Lufthansa mother... Purger was right... What a sad day!..

Well for decades they were flying on the uncomfortable CRJs, they are used to small regional planes. Also at this rate they will be flying from LJU to BEG on A319 and 733 :D

Its straight clear now. Our corrupt politicians want the airline back to continue squeezing money. It is all their game plan to trouble and ditch adria to bankruptcy and start a government entity again. Big dirty gang played this conspiracy. Any intellectual connected to the whole story who claims this is wrong is either part of the conspiracy or a foolish idiot that could not understand this. Nobody cares Slovenian people. All corrupt crooks they dont care about countrys economy or adria employees. so sad.

bad news for LH Group.

Right about what exactly? Original idea was that behind 4K purchase was Lufthansa

Norwegian is another dead man walking.

To be fair, not all of it is that fault. Yes, they tried to expand too quickly in Europe against heavy weights of RYR and EZY and low cost long haul doesn't work, but the MAX grounding and 787 RR engines issue will put the final nail in the coffin.

Best thing we put Adria's logo in the flag and S5 on the car registrations as well.

You can find on Internet if you search .

That wasn't a scheduled flight for Air Serbia. Google a bit more about Ljubljana-Seychelle flights in the 90s.

@Pozdrav iz Rijeke

JU and JP back in the 80s hat capable people, JU was even profitable late 80s but these were also other times with regulated markets
Eventhough Air Baltic is airline of Latvia, they cover all 3 Baltic republics with a population of 6 mio and u re right they are well managed and i am sure there is less corruption and a more healthy working environment for companies. I dont want know how much money is going thru dark channels at OU YM or at their governments. They must be inefficient to hve such losses. If MNE HR SLO would create an ADRIA Adriatic Airlines, politics would be kept out, then there might be a chance or u take LH into the boat and create a Lufthansa Adriatic, maybe than there is a chance. But look at OK RO FB also they re in troubles. Even SK is not healthy and if u go long haul, since u re in the eastern part of Europe, you wld hve to pick up Long hauls to Asia where u compete with governments of Turkey, Qatar, U.A.E which makes it impossible again if u dont hve a certain size. Most realistic to me is LH group taking over LH group hub flights plus all other existing. Eventually even SK to CPH

Yet the Atr is flying while the CRJ isn't, if you know what I mean ;)

Then again the amount of Slovenes flying on JU these makes sure the Atr is not sent to LJU.

LOL!!

Was the Big Guy from Estonia brought into Slovenia to reborn Adria the Nordica way? The question is who could be the right airline partner? JU or any of EU carriers: A3, AF/KL, BA, LH,LO,OU,SK ?
Guess he might need some more time to make it happen. Still Estonian was state owned when become bankrupt. Adria was a private entity, so he needs to find right partners on government side to talk as well as airline partner interested to coop.

Does anybody knows what is the status of Adria's flight school ? Adria Airways is 100% owner of the flight school and airplanes school uses. Adria also sold the building flight school is stationed to Adria Tehnika.

No, Purger your comments in post Anonymous 30.9. at 19:48 were not about PSO in Serbia, they were about Adria complaint to EC about Air Serbia. Don't try to change the topic. Here is the source with your picture and your comments. Do you still think as you said "Mislim da Adria ima dosta veliku šansu u ovom slučaju"?
