“Too early” for Croatia Airlines to enter Slovenia

The Croatian Minister for Sea, Transport and Infrastructure has responded to criticism directed towards Croatia Airlines for failing to react to Adria Airways’ imminent collapse. Mr Butković said, “It is difficult to say anything about it. Croatia Airlines has limited capacity. Last week, we made some decision regarding the company. It is too early to comment on this matter. The situation in Slovenia is yet to unravel. Of course, it would be good for Croatia Airlines to expand, but it is too early to discuss this matter”. Other national carriers in the former Yugoslavia habe reacted to Adria’s ongoing suspension of service with Air Serbia launching rescue fares, while both the Serbian carrier and Montenegro Airlines plan to increase frequencies from their respective hubs to Ljubljana. In 2015, a former Croatia Airlines executive claimed that a planned merger between the Croatian carrier and Adria Airways was blocked by politicians in 2012.

    Let's face it, OU is LH Group's bit*h so they could have offered to fly some flights like ZAG-FRA-LJU-FRA-ZAG.

    They have spare capacity in winter. I am sure with Q400 they could at least break-even. It would still be better than to have them parked at the airport.

      Well, JU serves LJU and OU doesnt. It is much easier to increase capacity when you already operate than start a new route overnight; in addition to that, it is still September, not really dead season for OU.

    ASL and. MGX will increace capacity on flights that already operates and CTN will increace what?

      It's an EU country. OU just have to base a few planes are run operations from Zagreb no new AOC needed.

      What's more, OU should use Adria being a fellow Star member to their advantage by taking their miles and more passengers. These are frequent flyer passenger! An airlines bread bread butter!

      If they do it properly they could make it look like they are doing the Slovenian/Ljubljana a huge favor by rescuing their standard passengers, supporting local businesses and quickly moving to ensure there's minimal impact when Adria declares bankruptcy. They could spin it in a real positive way, maybe even re-brand the aircraft they base their as Slovenia Airlines.

      An awesome opportunity for OU! With minimal work they could add a few hundred thousand passengers flown on their aircraft just over the winter period alone.

      For a start they could have organized a bus ride from LJU to ZAG and offered rescue fares! Then they could use two Q400s to base them in LJU and fly to key European airports or at least Star Alliance hubs. I am sure they could have done it if they really wanted to.

      LJU has less competition than ZAG so yields would be higher and there is year round demand unlike on the coast.
