Ljubljana Jože Pučnik Airport handled 20.992 passengers in July, representing a decrease of 89.9%. The number of aircraft movements was down 61.2% to 1.286. Overall, during the first seven months of the year, Ljubljana processed 218.070 travellers, down 79.6%. Aircraft movements decreased 60.8% to 7.840. Currently, Air France, Air Serbia, easyJet, LOT Polish Airlines, Lufthansa, Montenegro Airlines, Swiss, Transavia, Turkish Airlines and Wizz Air maintain operations to the Slovenian capital. British Airways and Brussels Airlines are expected to restore services next month.
We don't need a national carrier. Instead, let's give money to a foreign one. Foreigners know best, just look at Fraport and Adria. Oh, the latter one doesn't exist anymore.

DeleteAccording the 6-month Fraport financial report LJU registered the biggest drop in activity compared to other airports in their portfolio.
DeleteBEG dropped 88% in June WITH your national carrier + you have loans to repay for it.

DeleteActual drop is even higher as JP has canceled a lot of flights in last July due to their stupid business model with ACMI for LH group.
DeleteAnon 12.07 at least airport operator in BEG is not going bankrupt as is the case with LJU.

ReplyDeleteEven with a national carrier it probably wouldn’t be more than 20% of last year’s numbers because of the travel restrictions, unlike Croatia that doesn’t care about the virus...
DeleteWhich travel restrictions? Adria most profitable routes were within Schengen border and those countries does not have any travel restrictions in Slovenia.

DeleteI guess you belong to the "we don't need a national carrier" brigade and you would be more than happy to pay Ryan ot Wizz to fly from LJU. Well, these are ruthless companies that will squeeze every penny from the airport. Especially LJU which is in a desperate position. And that is why Fraport wants yours money and their own. I sure as hell do not support the idea.
LJU is simply to small for FR or W6 to establish a base here. Slovenia as itself does not have mass tourism or huge population of ethnic living outside which are most important factor for LCC to open a base. And third is incentives from airport/Government etc...
DeleteI support a national carrier, but not what we had with adria (expensive tickets, bad service, big losses...). I support a national carrier with rational prices and not necessarily a profit making, but at least a loss thats not that big, so that it still makes sense to have it...but if we would have something like adria again, then I would rather have W6 and FR flying...

DeleteThat's what we all want Nejc. But to achieve that you need to have managers from airline business and not politically apointed people.
DeleteAir transport is not a must for every country, there are other means of transportation. And it's not a reason to be pride or to be ashamed. At the end it's a way of transportation. I haven't seen a country glorying in its bus transport company, or it bus terminal. How the hell did we end up doing this stupidity in air transportation?

DeleteYes yes bus transport in Slovenia is brilliant, companies that give locals jobs are just amazing and also everything is effective and connectivity to other countries (not just neighbours) is among the best in Europe. Train transport is also the best, trains are never late, railroads are so well spread that you really don't need to change the train in Austria if you want to go to Italy. Oh and of course there were no stupid and pointless investments in projects. That only happens when there is aviation involved. Also, we have so much coast and it's so useful and not just for cargo.
DeleteWe should totally privatize all transportation means in Slovenia, let the market sort things out. If it's a good idea for aviation, it must also be good for everything else.
A lot of what you written is indeed true but only for certain states.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you that there are expected services and there are non-essential services.
BUS transport is used to transport a lot of people on short trips, like around town and to small minicapes that, do not have rail road link.
RAIL is used to transfer cargo and people between ‘big’ centres like Portoroz, Kranj, Maribor …
SO, IN ESSENCE AIRLINE LINK CAN BE LOOK AT AS NOT NECESSARY SERVICE.
BUT WHY SLOVENIA IS REQUREAD TO HAVE GOOD AIRLINK?
INDUSTRY
Slovenia has trade surplus, that means it exports more than imports. This is good as it rises the standard of leaving of residents in Slovenia.
Our primary partners are Germany, Italy, Croatia, Austria, Swaziland, France, Serbia.
In order to maintain relationships and maintain presence in that countries you need to have means of connecting them. That is the role of the flag carrier Airline, not a role of LCC airline.
TRUISM
Slovenia has worked hard for the past 10 years to spread the message across the word of a green, adventure, safe, culinary destination.
Finally, for the last 3 year this image has being picked up more and more by our target group and we had 15% increase in truism per year (last year we achieved 6mil of tourist visits).
Here you also can see activity taking place in a form of rebuilding hotels, ….
Keep in mind this additionally boost the living standard of Slovenians.
Slovenia focus group are foreign tourists. So, having a link for tourist to arrive to Slovenia is also necessary.
SO WHY IS AIRLINE FOR SLOVENIA BENEFICIAL?
BECAUSE OF ITS INDUSTRY AND TRUISM STRATEGIC POSITIONING.
