Skopje Airport completes runway overhaul

Skopje Airport has completed the overhaul of its runway after two months of work. It involved replacing its upper layer. The General Manager of operator TAV Macedonia, Metin Batak, said, “This major investment has been completed after 62 days and included the renewal of the airport’s runway asphalt. At TAV, we are satisfied and confident that the successful completion of a project of this kind, for the first time since the runway reconstruction in 1996, will provide increased airport service quality. We would like to thank all parties and stakeholders since we truly appreciate their collaboration, support, and contribution”. Skopje Airport’s runway is 2.950 meters long and 45 meters wide.

    Great investment for SKP. Looks really really nice. It's a pity that they did not widen the runway to 60m to make it a category 4E airport.
    Is BEG the only airport in ex-YU which is a 4E?

      Why would they need it to be 60m

      Firstly: not even, Beg, Lju, Zag have so much and all the planes can land there with no problem.

      Secondly: they woupd have to close the whole runway than for few weeks as the whole new light system and other thing would have to be done.

      RWY is not to be measured at Google Earth or similar. RWY physical characteristics (declared and certified ones) are published in the national Aeronautical Information Publication (AIP). Serbian AIP, page LYBE AD 2.12 states Belgrade RWY width is 45 m.       It's 45 m with shoulders, as it originally was constructed as 60 m, but it's more expensive to maintain 60 m than 45, if not used actively but just as clearance from dirt.

      Their new threshold marking (zebra) is not per ICAO standards!!!

      The mid space must be the double for orientation etc. How can this happen, I'm amazed but not surprised in our region.

    We are now waiting for Lufthansa, BA, Air France, KLM, Qatar and FlyDubai to start flying to SKP.
    On a more realistic note, there is a rumour that easyJet might expand their operations from SKP from September, not sure if its related with the government incentives

      Hope so! EasyJet has cut its presence in Berlin to 18 aircraft (used to be 34). Where would they take that capacity now?
