NEWS FLASH

The Macedonian Ministry for Transport and Communications has issued a renewed public call for airlines to request financial support for the introduction of new European routes from Skopje and Ohrid airports for the period up to December 30, 2025. It comes after the previous tender was annulled due to errors with the documentation submitted by the three applicants which included Aegean Airlines, Lufthansa and Wizz Air.

The same terms and conditions are applicable for the renewed call. Carriers interested in applying for the tender must be from Europe, have carried at least ten million passengers and generated 25 million euros in profit in 2019. Furthermore, the airline is obligated to continue operating the new routes past December 30, 2025, for a period of at least two to three years. If it fails to do so, it will have to return the funds granted by the state. Under the terms outlined in the public call, airlines must maintain flights to the newly launched destinations at least twice per week throughout the year for the duration of the financial assistance, develop a plan for marketing and promotion and submit a report on its operations to the Ministry of Transport and Communications every six months The Ministry will select the winner based on the number of weekly flights offered on the new routes, the volume of passengers at the destination airport (the busier the airport the greater the chance of the route being subsidised), as well as the amount of offered capacity. Funding will not be provided for routes from Skopje which have been operated from the airport in the past two seasons (summer and winter), nor from Ohrid if they have been operated either from the lakeside city or the Macedonian capital over the past two seasons.

Macedonia will subsidise the services by providing each airline with seven euros per passenger on each new route from Skopje, and 4.5 euros per passenger on each new route from Ohrid. Interested applicants have until March 31 to submit their bids. The bids will be made public on April 4, after which the evaluation commission has fifteen days to declare the winner(s).

This is very impressive, professional buisness approach from Macedonia, that is actually looking to improve connection and travel to the country.
I hope the airlines deliver on the deal.

Airlines that had for example 9 million passengers are not fit for subsidies according to the Glorious Ministry of Transportation? What rational reason could justify this requirement?

@16.37 makes a point. A rather poor country should spend their little money only on stable airlines

Sorry my friend we are maybe poor but WE deserve to have good airlines with good routes , we deserve that as people. Btw the other Balkan countries are that rich so they have pretty good connections with main cities ? Comeone dont joke me.

Oh so the 9M annual pax airlines are "unstable" but those with 10 are somehow "stable"? Profitability requirement is not from last year, not from 2021, not from 2020 but from 2019. Why not from year 1985? Good airlines were profitable in 2022.

As a Slovenian I’m not an expert on Serbia’s economy or its companies, but I consider Air Serbia a stable airline that should be able to apply. For example, Graz Airport in AT is working very hard to get them flying there, from what I’ve read. So I’m quite disappointed to learn that it cannot apply due to this pax limit.

Air serbia is stable with their old planes ? I will say not so good , I had very bad experience with them , their fleet is old , I have been with low cost carriers and it was 10 time better then Air serbia

The tender is made so that Wizzair wins the tender again. This is the airline that fits the gasto type of airports. The winner will be Wizzair and the new routes will just be another secondary or tertiary airport. Maybe we can see additions to ATH or TLV as the most from SKP and another German village from OHD. We will see.
