Belgrade Airport granted approval to use new runway

Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport has been granted approval by the Serbian Civil Aviation Directorate for the use of its new 3.500-metre runway (pictured), which can be utilised by commercial aircraft from Tuesday, June 6. The Directorate carried out inspections on the new runway from December 29, 2022, until May 25 of this year and concluded that all conditions have been met for its usage. The new runway will replace the existing one, which will be overhauled in the coming period. Once its reconstruction is completed, the newly built runway will become a parallel taxiway besides the original one. The two will be linked through a new system of taxiways, including four rapid exit taxiways (RETs), for which exits have already been built. The newly built runway will also be used in the future, should the main one be unable to handle aircraft for whatever reason. The overhaul of the existing main runway will commence this year. The new runway was built using a special type of high-resistance concrete, specially developed for the project, in order to improve its weight-bearing capacity. Furthermore, it includes a new LED lighting system, while a new drainage system along the runway will ensure the better flow of water and improve safety.

      No. It will not have two runways. Only one. The new runway will be used as taxiway when the old is refurbished.

      I doubt it will replace it and there is a project for completely new ones bit further... But Batajnica will sooner or later start operating as low cost and Belgrade secondary airport. Like that BEG will release some capacity for AirSerbia and other legacy/ more expensive companies.

      I would think Lisičiji Jarak had better chance the Batajnica.

      And it doesn't stand a chance, but at least it ain't military and it can expand into the swamp and PKB farmland.

      With the ongoing feud between Vazduhoplovni Savez and Vojska Srbije Lisiciji Jarak has a better chance to become a swamp than decent airfield for GA that can be used all year round. And btw, Lisicij Jarak has a huge piece of land that can use to extend runways and facilities and it is currently rented as farmland

      I think it's highly impossible Batajnica to replace this airport in ten years as suggested above. Nobody invests so much money in the terminal and runway for only ten years, not even if the rate of return is high.

    News about this always make me sad. You had a great plan from the 1980s, to have a proper second runway and sample space to expand the Belgrade Airport. Then few years back that crazy director came-up with this semi-solution, and that got then transferred to the concession contract... only so few people can potentially earn a bit of bucks on some farmland and not get few illegal houses destroyed. It's that terrible saying "kill a cow for 1kg of meat"... disappointing.

      BEG doesn't need a second runway. The inset runway will be the same as LGW.

      To be the same as LGW, we would just need BEG to be a secondary airport and have a 1979 local government agreement not to build second runway - without every city and country urban plan that includes second runway.

      The only difference is that as pilot I can see that there is zero operational need for a second runway. Just like at LGW, VCE or NCE it's there to serve as a backup if the main one becomes unavailable for whatever reason. During most of its life it's going to be used as a taxiway, and not even. So in BEG's case it was the best solution in order to ensure that the main runway can be overhauled without affecting daily operations too much. Building a second runway at BEG would be a crazy expense, because acquiring the land and building it is not the only cost, but maintaining the runway itself and the taxiways leading up to it will cost a ton as well. awhile the inset one will be used as a taxiway, and those get regular maintenance anyway.
