NEWS FLASH

Air Serbia is today operating a special repatriation flight from Tel Aviv to Skopje, to evacuate Macedonian nationals who have been caught in the latest escalation of violence in the region. The airline is operating the service with the routing Belgrade - Tel Aviv - Skopje - Belgrade upon the request of the Macedonian government. In addition, Air Serbia continues to run scheduled flights between Belgrade and the Israeli city, with services sold out in both directions. The carrier has said it will continue to maintain scheduled operations to Tel Aviv until it is deemed safe to do so by Israeli authorities. The airline also operated a special repatration flight for Serbian nationals last weekend.

Since drones started to fly all the way to Moscow and pushing authorities to close airports from time to time, I am wondering how safe are these operations in war zones? Don't call me hater, I am flying on a daily basis and I am not worried about any other aspect of flying. I am aware people need to get out somehow and that such flights can bring a lot of money. But, I guess, we all know drones and missiles can loose it's connection with a base or simply take a wrong route/target due to human error. Let's remember drone in Zagreb, Malaysian flight, if I am not wrong something similar happened in Egypt a few years ago. Passenger airliners are not Air Force One and not equipped with technology to detect, avoid or destroy anything military. I believe there is a good reason all airliners are avoiding not only Ukrainian airspace, where you can't fly anyhow, but also nearby areas where is a chance to meet any military flying objects in the air. Even Russian airlines are taking much longer routes deeper in their airspace when flying let's say from Turkey as it's clear that flying is not save even xx kilometers from the UA/RU border. Many well known airlines with excellent reputation and safety track stopped their flights to Israel immediately not to risk anything and putting safety first, as a common rule in aviation. But there are others which are taking a risk. I hope we all agree there is a risk. It is hard to judge how big it is, but i have feeling such decisions are money/profit driven. What are your thoughts?

My thoughts are that I trust Israeli authorities and JU decision making. Also in Egypt it was a bomb inside the plane (if you're refering to Metrojet Flight 9268) and you can see planes planes flying pretty damn close to Ukraine right now in the western part.

Air Serbia leases-in aircraft and at the same time it leases-out. Though repatriation and evacuation flights do have a priority, even if they do not mark up on the difference they pay to lease in and what they charge to lease out.

When Air Serbia leases (in) aircraft, it's typically a longer term arrangement (wet or dry). This article is about a one-off charter, which is completely different.
