NEWS FLASH

Visitors entering the United Kingdom from visa-exempt countries, including Croatian and Slovenian passport holders, will be obligated to register online prior to entering the country or transferring through its airports and pay a ten pound fee. The Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) system, requiring travellers to obtain pre-travel authorisation will come into force for citizens of European Union member states on April 2, 2025. Ireland will be the only country exempt. Applications begin on March 5, 2025. Applicants must provide personal details, passport information, and a photograph, as well as answer eligibility questions. Applications can be submitted via the UK ETA app or online. An approved ETA is valid for two years or until the associated passport expires, allowing multiple visits of up to six months each. Even travellers transiting through the UK and its airports without entering will need an ETA. The ETA system aims to enhance border security and streamline entry processes. Travellers are advised to apply well in advance of their planned travel dates to ensure compliance with the new requirements. The ETA approval process will take up to a maximum of three business days.

Despite all the above: they are a joke. In which country an institution steals your passport from you for six months keeping you hostage after you already had a visa to enter the country and left thousands of pounds to get an education there?

USA holds passports sometimes for over a year when people from certain 'countries' apply for the visa.

It is different. The EU will not ask you to do ETA to transfer. If you fly from point A to New York via Frankfurt you won't fill out ETA or pay for it. EU ETA approval will be literally in seconds, not 3 business days and thirdly EU ETA lasts 3 years, not 2.

UK is indeed in a decline. Living standard, as measured by official average real wages, hasn't improved since 2008. Then came the Brexit, the full impact of which only became visible after covid lockdown. Meanwhile, favourable trade deal with USA is a pipe dream.
Sterling is down 8% vs. Euro, compared to the day before the referendum, even after recent rally.
