Greece’s national carrier Aegean Airlines is discontinuing its seasonal summer flights between Athens and Sarajevo. Last year, the service between the two capitals was maintained twice per week with an Airbus A320 aircraft, from June 1 until September 21. Last November, the carrier also discontinued its fifth-freedom flights between Skopje and Sarajevo. Aegean had previously operated to Bosnia and Herzegovina’s capital seasonally during the 2019 summer season with last year marking the resumption of nonstop operations between the two cities.
I don’t know why such a good airline has a problem expanding in the region.

DeleteFor SJJ there is nothing wrong with their fleet , they were sending A320 planes to operate empty on the route , thats why they cut it , simply no demand and no reason for flying between the two cities
DeleteAh mb. That was the reasoning behind LJU at least considering the LF was like 95% during summer
DeleteIt's very easy to write that the LF was low without even knowing anything about the route. The route was packed throughout summer and even had 80% LF in early and late season

ReplyDeleteI flew with Aegean Athens Sarajevo and the flight was only around 50% full, so I understand why it was discontinued
ReplyDeleteEven with stop in Skopje still didnt work out for Sarajevo to be connected to Athens , now they also cut the non stop route ... not good for SJJ
ReplyDeleteThe flight with the Skopje stop was not a transfer option to Athens. When landing from Sarajevo to Skopje there was a wait time of 5 hours until the Athens flight. It was envisioned as ATH-SKP-SJJ-SKO-ATH but rather ATH-SKP-ATH and SKP-SJJ-SKP.

Delete^ seems like there is little demand for Skopje too since they cut flights significantly there.
DeleteSJJ is too far for ATR. ATH-SKP duration is 1h and 5 minutes. ATH SJJ would be 1 hour 50 minutes and because the maximum range is 1560 km of an ATR it would need an refill in SJJ. more than 4 hour for an ATR turn around is just too long.
DeleteSJJ is not far for the ATR. It's about the same distance as BEG from ATH and JU sends that plane from time to time.
DeleteAegean probably doesn't have enough of them for SJJ.
Ryanair would maybe make sense for ATH-SJJ (they fly SKG-SJJ already though), but I don't really see why a legacy carrier like Aegean Airlines would be needed there. It doesn't seem that there is enough demand for that.
DeleteThere is definitely demand, Greece has become cheaper than Turkiye and many Bosniaks spend their holiday there, it used to be mostly Serbs and charters from Banja Luka but now it's everyone

ReplyDeleteThey're facing serious problems with their neos tho. I think when they will have their full fleet back they will return to SJJ.
DeleteSeems like Ryanair will profit hard on this via Thessaloniki as many people will just hop on another flight from there either to Athens or Rhodes as an island hub
ReplyDeleteThere is no interlining between FR and any airline in SKG or anywhere else.

DeleteAegean concentrates its power on trunk routes. So for example ATH-CGN will be closed and neighboring ATH-DUS gets extra frequencies and A321 instead of A320. The number of total seats to Ex-Yu will be increased in 2025.
